The residence – an ensemble of structures designed in a modern ranch vernacular – is effortlessly unified through layered, interconnected outdoor gathering spaces and regional materials that elaborates upon the experience of moving between structures, heightening and renewing one’s sense of place. Upon entering the courtyard, one is immediately aware of seamless and unfolding relationships between architecture and landscape through a sophisticated, regional palette of natural stone, water, and plants. Set upon architectural focal points, two perpendicular sandstone paths descend into the space and converge upon a monolithic, hand-carved granite fountain. The design of the fountain is purposefully quiet, both in its detailing and operation. The feature includes a recessed interior, allowing water to become still before it reaches the surface, with lightly cleft sides, allowing the water to delicately bounce as it descends into the geometric lower granite basin. The landscape architect’s selection of various stone material extends the tones of the home’s granite walls and contextual surroundings into the garden, but also be detailed in a manner that balances rural and modern qualities. The majority of the paving is constructed of rectilinear gray sandstone with a natural finish and snapped edges, laid in a staggered running bond organization. Throughout the garden, thoughtful attention was also given to the configuration and layout of terraces, pathways, and steps. In doing so, this ensured that the edges of the terrace and its interface to other elements were designed so that no “leftover” stone paver pieces would be found. Within the central courtyard, split-faced stone stairs descend into a rectilinear plinth of lawn, punctuated by a carved granite fire pit. Leveraging the property’s existing topographic relief, a shallow infinity-edge dipping pool abstracts the transparent and cavity-like pools found throughout the Rocky Mountains. The design purposefully achieves the illusion of a larger water feature with the distant pond and offers a refreshing recreational element. Containing the infinity edge, a designed granite escarpment emerges from the meadow, juxtaposing the geometric water feature and providing informal seating ledges. The site’s prior use required the landscape architect to incorporate a highly technical and complex sub-surface structural system. The initial geotechnical report identified the building envelopes rested on 12 feet of man-placed fill. Assuming a 1 percent settlement, the team faced concerns that the terraces would settle up to 12 inches. In response, a grid of structural micro-piles provides the necessary foundation for the construction of terraces immediately outside of the architecture, under the water features and site walls. The solution enabled the crisp detailing and design resolution of the architectural structures to seamlessly connect with the horizontal stone terraces.

The remarkable Greek inspired indoor pool facility has a blend of contemporary rectilinear components with Greek-Roman architectural elements and finishes, such as the over-extending, ancient-style aqueduct that transitions from the spa into the pool, and the hand carved fire-water features at each end of the room. The aqueduct is a key relevance to the style which portrays an ancient cultural method of elutriating stagnant bath water with a continuous supply of fresh water. Each elaborately hand carved feature sets a mood of Greek architectural expression in this space. The two fire-water features at each end of the pool and all of the column structural support depict a ‘Doric’ style consisting of channeled columns. Also, to enhance this space with a full perspective of Greek-Roman style, the convex ceiling depicts a vision of an opened-ceiling that reveals a fully animated Greek-mythological star setting created by fiber optic lighting. Geothermal technology is the primary source for heating and cooling the pool and spa. Wonderfully colorful and full of energy, this is a large Italian Villa for a young family. Designed to be as bright, wild and fun as the Winn Resort in Las Vegas. Children are growing up here, bowling, gaming, as the rest of the home features hand carved woods and limestones, handmade custom mosaics and rich textures. Kitchen area has a mosaic name shield behind range, whilst above the range is a a carved limestone range hood. Reds feature strongly in this beautiful home, as well as black and cream. Wrought iron fixtures including the stair rails, lighting and fireplace screens. Outdoor loggia lounge areas and bar b q areas, are all also designed by Maraya Interior Design, along with the multiple outdoor walks and halls. On breakfast room patio, designers had a unique fire table fabricated from a boulder found locally. The huge rock penetrates a tempered glass top. The stone features a carved-out bowl for a fire pit. Flames are fueled by gas via a gas tube the runs up the center of the boulder. The flames are diffused by crushed fire glass. It's a great spot for lunch by the pool and for cocktails at sunset. Luxurious modern take on a traditional white Italian villa. An entry with a silver domed ceiling, painted moldings in patterns on the walls and mosaic marble flooring create a luxe foyer. Into the formal living room, cool polished Crema Marfil marble tiles contrast with honed carved limestone fireplaces throughout the home, including the outdoor loggia. Ceilings are coffered with white painted crown moldings and beams, or planked, and the dining room has a mirrored ceiling. Bathrooms are white marble tiles and counters, with dark rich wood stains or white painted. The hallway leading into the master bedroom is designed with barrel vaulted ceilings and arched paneled wood stained doors. The master bath and vestibule floor is covered with a carpet of patterned mosaic marbles, and the interior doors to the large walk in master closets are made with leaded glass to let in the light. The master bedroom has dark walnut planked flooring, and a white painted fireplace surround with a white marble hearth. The kitchen features white marbles and white ceramic tile backsplash, white painted cabinetry and a dark stained island with carved molding legs. Next to the kitchen, the bar in the family room has terra cotta colored marble on the backsplash and counter over dark walnut cabinets. The Bloomfield Hills Residence is a 10,400sf single-family home in Bloomfield Hills, MI, designed for a young family looking for unique architecture and meticulous interior design in their new home. MPdL Studio served as both design architect and architect of record for this home in which every detail was customized for the family's lifestyle, with high-end design and healthy living at its core. Our design paid particular attention to detailed brick work, glass walls, millwork, and cabinetry. The exterior is Endicott dark ironspot brick, stucco, cypress windows and trim, and slate roof. The interior materials include bluestone and walnut floors, knotty oak, and milk painted maple cabinetry. In addition to selecting all furnishings, light fixtures, table settings, and the curation of art work, MPdL Studio custom-designed key furniture. For example, the dining room contains a walnut wood hand-carved table that seats up to sixteen, while the bar area features a walnut butcher block counter and frosted bronze glass shelves. The wooden staircase in the entry features details that are all customized with unique alignment elements from the vertical seams to the treads on the ground, and the wood and metal handrails. Airy curtains line the walls and turn around corners, complementing the architecture of the space. The kitchen and family room were designed as an open space for an active family with ample storage, comfortable furniture, and views to the back yard which include an outdoor pool, cabana, and custom play structures for the children.

Sited on a hill sloping towards eastern views of Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountains beyond, this home for a vibrant family of four carefully weaves together their rituals of daily life with an awareness of the site's existing natural elements. Garden courts washed in natural light and lush with native vegetation are delicately carved out between earthen concrete masses, giving a meditative pause between the active living spaces. These negative spaces create a foreground of intimacy with light, earth, air, and native plantings, in contrast to the expansive framed vistas of water, mountains, and sky that are ever present in the distance beyond. The upper volume nestles the bedroom spaces into tree canopies above, modulating daylight, privacy and views with delicate wooden screens. The home acts as a lens that gives material presence to the ephemeral qualities of life and place.
