The original site was the former residence of Wuyi Duwei Liu Xiangzhi in the Qing Dynasty. The three-entry and two-yard wooden structure wears a bucket-style building with a unique style and ancient charm. After a hundred years of catastrophe, in the blooming and precipitation of time, telling the past history. The lighting design strives to create a subtle and introverted, low-key but prominent light environment. The lighting technique to brighten the cavity in the old house area highlights the unique cavity decoration design in the architectural structure. The color temperature is warm white light, which not only restores the color and texture of the building itself, but also strengthens the modeling arc of the gable part of the traditional Chinese building. At night, under the background of the lights, dreams of the past and the present can pass through the past and the present, feeling the unique Chinese architectural charm of the flying eaves and the white walls and black tiles. The promenade part has changed from the traditional, and mostly uses linear facade lighting to provide functional lighting for the moving lines, so that the traditional and elegant architectural atmosphere also contains a bright and modern temperament. This project was such an incredible design opportunity, and instilled inspiration and excitement at every turn! Our amazing clients came to us with the challenge of converting their beloved family home into a welcoming haven for all members of the family. At the time that we met our clients, they were struggling with the difficult personal decision of the fate of the home. Their father/father-in-law had passed away and their mother/mother-in-law had recently been admitted into a nursing facility and was fighting Alzheimer’s. Resistant to loss of the home now that both parents were out of it, our clients purchased the home to keep in in the family. Despite their permanent home currently being in New Jersey, these clients dedicated themselves to keeping and revitalizing the house. We were moved by the story and became immediately passionate about bringing this dream to life. The home was built by the parents of our clients and was only ever owned by them, making this a truly special space to the family. Our goal was to revitalize the home and to bring new energy into every room without losing the special characteristics that were original to the home when it was built. In this way, we were able to develop a house that maintains its own unique personality while offering a space of welcoming neutrality for all members of the family to enjoy over time. The renovation touched every part of the home: the exterior, foyer, kitchen, living room, sun room, garage, six bedrooms, three bathrooms, the laundry room, and everything in between. The focus was to develop a style that carried consistently from space to space, but allowed for unique expression in the small details in every room. Starting at the entry, we renovated the front door and entry point to offer more presence and to bring more of the mid-century vibe to the home’s exterior. We integrated a new modern front door, cedar shingle accents, new exterior paint, and gorgeous contemporary house numbers that really allow the home to stand out. Just inside the entry, we renovated the foyer to create a playful entry point worthy of attention. Cement look tile adorns the foyer floor, and we’ve added new lighting and upgraded the entry coat storage. Upon entering the home, one will immediately be captivated by the stunning kitchen just off the entry. We transformed this space in just about every way. While the footprint of the home ultimately remained almost identical, the aesthetics were completely turned on their head. We re-worked the kitchen to maximize storage and to create an informal dining area that is great for casual hosting or morning coffee. We removed the entry to the garage that was once in the informal dining, and created a peninsula in its place that offers a unique division between the kitchen/informal dining and the formal dining and living areas. The simple light warm light gray cabinetry offers a bit of traditional elegance, along with the marble backsplash and quartz countertops. We extended the original wood flooring into the kitchen and stained all floors to match for a warmth that truly resonates through all spaces. We upgraded appliances, added lighting everywhere, and finished the space with some gorgeous mid century furniture pieces. In the formal dining and living room, we really focused on maintaining the original marble fireplace as a focal point. We cleaned the marble, repaired the mortar, and refinished the original fireplace screen to give a new sleek look in black. We then integrated a new gas insert for modern heating and painted the upper portion in a rich navy blue; an accent that is carried through the home consistently as a nod to our client’s love of the color. The former entry into the old covered porch is now an elegant glass door leading to a stunning finished sunroom. This room was completely upgraded as well. We wrapped the entire space in cozy white shiplap to keep a casual feel with brightness. We tiled the floor with large format concrete look tile, and painted the old brick fireplace a bright white. We installed a new gas burning unit, and integrated transitional style lighting to bring warmth and elegance into the space. The new black-frame windows are adorned with decorative shades that feature hand-sketched bird prints, and we’ve created a dedicated garden-ware “nook” for our client who loves to work in the yard. The far end of this space is completed with two oversized chaise loungers and overhead lights…the most perfect little reading nook! Just off the dining room, we created an entirely new space to the home: a mudroom. The clients lacked this space and desperately needed a landing spot upon entering the home from the garage. We uniquely planned existing space in the garage to utilize for this purpose, and were able to create a small but functional entry point without losing the ability to park cars in the garage. This new space features cement-look tile, gorgeous deep brown cabinetry, and plenty of storage for all the small items one might need to store while moving in and out of the home. The remainder of the upstairs level includes massive renovations to the guest hall bathroom and guest bedroom, upstairs master bed/bath suite, and a third bedroom that we converted into a home office for the client. Some of the largest transformations were made in the basement, where unfinished space and lack of light were converted into gloriously lit, cozy, finished spaces. Our first task was to convert the massive basement living room into the new master bedroom for our clients. We removed existing built-ins, created an entirely new walk-in closet, painted the old brick fireplace, installed a new gas unit, added carpet, introduced new lighting, replaced windows, and upgraded every part of the aesthetic appearance. One of the most incredible features of this space is the custom double sliding barn door made by a Denver artisan. This space is truly a retreat for our clients! We also completely transformed the laundry room, back storage room, basement master bathroom, and two bedrooms. This home’s massive scope and ever-evolving challenges were thrilling and exciting to work with, and the result is absolutely amazing. At the end of the day, this home offers a look and feel that the clients love. Above all, though, the clients feel the spirit of their family home and have a welcoming environment for all members of the family to enjoy for years to come.

This Toronto home was in need of an update in order to cater to this growing family’s needs. Creating storage was the key factor in this redesign, so we focused on implementing stylish storage solutions throughout the living area and entryway. To do so, we added a new fireplace with custom millwork on either side with drawers for kids storage as well as floating shelving for books and decor. In the entryway, we created a stylish mudroom area, complete with hooks for hats, jackets, and backpacks, as well as a shoe rack, drawers, and cabinets — the home now offers plenty of storage space that will keep the interior clean, decluttered, and organized! When the strongest feature in a room is two full walls of windows, you don’t fight it. Surrounded by lush green pastures, we embraced the views and the love of waking up to the sun. Is there anything better than feeling the warmth on your face as you nestle into the most comfortable bed in the world knowing you have no where to be and nothing to do? No, no there is not.

We completely remodeled a two-bedroom downsize home for our client, opening up the space as much as we could to add a spacious feel. The neutral palette balances warm and cool hues. For the power room, the large format graphic wallpaper adds visual interest while not fighting the highly patterned granite countertop.

This is a multilevel storage system that usually has two shelves, but is available in up to four shelving levels. Store pots, pans, and even small counter appliances that are easily accessible and within arms-reach. Pullout shelving eliminates the inconvenience of fighting through the first layer of kitchen items and makes valuable use of storage space in the back of the cabinet.

This stunning salvaged brick from 1800s/early 1920 is going to be the backsplash for the stunning hand hewn salvaged wood beam mantle! We wanted the brick and the mantle to complement each other rather than fight each other. That is the reason for doing a very neutral brick color. The dark rustic wood mantle will pop against it creating the "WOW" factor.

This family throws some mean parties where large crowds usually sit at the poolside. There’s an entire section of this walk out second level that is dedicated to entertaining which also gives access to the pool in the backyard. This place comes alive at night with built in surround sounds and LED lights. There was just one issue. The kitchen. The kitchen did not fit in. It was old, outdated, out-styled and nonfunctional. They knew the kitchen had to be address eventually but they just didn’t want to redo the kitchen. They wanted to revamp the kitchen, so they asked us to come in and look at the space to see how we can design this second floor kitchen in their New Rochelle home. It was a small kitchen, strategically located where it could be the hub that the family wanted it to be. It held its own amongst everything that was in the open space like the big screen TV, fireplace and pool table. That is exactly what we did in the design and here is how we did it. First, we got rid of the kitchen table and by doing so we created a peninsular. This eventually sets up the space for a couple of really cool pendant lights, some unique counter chairs and a wine cooler that was purchased before but never really had a home. We then turned our attention to the range and hood. This was not the main kitchen, so wall storage wasn’t the main goal here. We wanted to create a more open feel interaction while in the kitchen, hence we designed the free standing chimney hood alone to the left of the window. We then looked at how we can make it more entertaining. We did that by adding a Wine rack on a buffet style type area. This wall was free and would have remained empty had we not find a way to add some more glitz. Finally came the counter-top. Every detail was crucial because the view of the kitchen can be seen from when you enter the front door even if it was on the second floor walk out. The use of the space called for a waterfall edge counter-top and more importantly, the stone selection to further accentuate the effect. It was crucial that there was movement in the stone which connects to the 45 degree waterfall edge so it would be very dramatic. Nothing was overlooked in this space. It had to be done this way if it was going to have a fighting chance to take command of its territory. A custom-painted home decor wall mural was the perfect solution for this large Great Room wall. Previous attempts to tame the size of the wall with gallery-style framed artwork had only made the space feel busy and constricted. What can we say, this project packs a big punch! Featuring a little bit of everything, this homeowner is ready for a “stay-cation”. We were able to tie into the existing roofline of the home and create a very fitting A.Frame porch that is screened in for anytime comfort. Stepping out onto the deck, we created a small but efficient grilling station to both cook dinner or cater the Monday night football parties. And with all those guests over for the game, we have “overflow” seating down on the patio. But let’s be honest, you might have to fight for a seat around the custom built firepit - because there is nothing better on a fall night, than warmth from a fire. Fringe Tree Appearance The average height of a fringe tree is about 10-20 feet tall. This makes it easy for it to fit into any garden nicely. The most prominent thing about this beautiful tree is its white fragrant flowers which bloom in May and early June. These flowers are grouped together in thin, fleecy hanging bands that are 6-8 inches long. These flowers appear all over the tree just before all the leaves start to sprout. After the flowers have fallen, you can enjoy the oval-shaped, dark green leaves for the summer and then the delightful yellow leaves during the fall. The female trees can produce a blackish-blue fruit after the flowers fall, this is a great way to attract your local birds. The bark on the tree is scaly and has red furrows with dark brown ridges. It does best in full sun with well drained but moist soil. It can also tolerate drought and is good with air pollution. As the design firm on the space, LK Design was intricately involved in determining the borders of the space and the way the floor plan would be laid out. Taking advantage of the southwest corner of the floor, we were able to incorporate three large balconies, tremendous views, excellent light and a layout that was open and spacious. There is a large master suite with two large dressing rooms/closets, two additional bedrooms, one and a half additional bathrooms, an office space, hearth room and media room, as well as the large kitchen with oversized island, butler's pantry and large open living room. The clients are not traditional in their taste at all, but going completely modern with simple finishes and furnishings was not their style either. What was produced is a very contemporary space with a lot of visual excitement. Every room has its own distinct aura and yet the whole space flows seamlessly. From the arched cloud structure that floats over the dining room table to the cathedral type ceiling box over the kitchen island to the barrel ceiling in the master bedroom, LK Design created many features that are unique and help define each space. At the same time, the open living space is tied together with stone columns and built-in cabinetry which are repeated throughout that space. This home’s massive scope and ever-evolving challenges were thrilling and exciting to work with, and the result is absolutely amazing. At the end of the day, this home offers a look and feel that the clients love. The motivation for this bathroom remodel came from a broken pipe under the foundation that had to be repaired. The owner decided that having a Carrera marble adorned bathroom would wrap her guests in the ultimate luxury. With a design by Mary Cates, ASID, we took this bathroom down to the studs and started fresh. We enlarged the shower and put in a hand shower so it is now big enough for 2! We put in a stylish freestanding tub in the corner and added another sink to the vanity. We took out extra cabinets that made the space feel cramped and bulky. The bath now is open and bright with the light color of the marble and light wall tones. The clear shower glass wrapped on 2 sides has this shower feeling large and spacious. The Ammara plumbing fixtures from Nob Hill Decorative Hardware create a divine finishing touch. Bath hardware and mirrors from Mary Cates & Co in Dallas make this bath feel one of a kind. Our homeowner says her guests are now fighting over who gets to use this bath while they are staying with her!
