Like many California ranch homes built in the 1950s, this original master bathroom was not really a "master bath." My clients, who only three years ago purchased the home from the family of the original owner, were saddled with a small, dysfunctional space. Chief among the dysfunctions: a vanity only 30" high, and an inconveniently placed window that forced the too-low vanity mirror to reflect only the waist and partial torso--not the face--of anyone standing in front of it. They wanted not only a more spacious bathroom but a bedroom as well, so we worked in tandem with an architect and contractor to come up with a fantastic new space: a true Master Suite. In order to refine a design concept for the soon-to-be larger space, and thereby narrow down material choices, my clients and I had a brainstorming session: we spoke of an elegant Old World/ European bedroom and bathroom, a luxurious bath that would reference a Roman spa, and finally the idea of a Hammam was brought into the mix. We blended these ideas together in oil-rubbed bronze fixtures, and a tiny tile mosaic in beautiful Bursa Beige marble from Turkey and white Thassos marble from Greece. The new generously sized bathroom boasts a jetted soaking tub, a very large walk-in shower, a double-sided fireplace (facing the tub on the bath side), and a luxurious 8' long vanity with double sinks and a storage tower. The vanity wall is covered with a mosaic vine pattern in a beautiful Bursa Beige marble from Turkey and white Thassos marble from Greece,. The custom Larson Juhl framed mirrors are flanked by gorgeous hand-wrought scones from Hubbardton Forge which echo the vine and leaf pattern in the mosaic. And the vanity itself features an LED strip in the toe-kick which allows one to see in the middle of the night without having to turn on a shockingly bright overhead fixture. At the other end of the master bath, a luxurious jetted tub nestles by a fireplace in the bay window area. Views of my clients' garden can be seen while soaking in bubbles. The over-sized walk-in shower features a paneled wainscoting effect which I designed in Crema Marfil marble. The vine mosaic continues in the shower, topped by green onyx squares. A rainshower head and a hand-held spray on a bar provides showering options. Maxwell, son of David, has been an avid basketball player since he was five, and spent hours playing on an old hoop in the driveway. David finally decided to get Pro Dunk Silver Basketball System that was consistent with his son's skill. Their system was installed by the concrete slab driveway. They then added Max's favorite team to the mix, and the result is attached. The dimensions of the playing area are 25' x 20. It is located in Green Oaks, Illinois. This is a Pro Dunk Silver Basketball System that was purchased in May of 2012. It was installed on a 25 ft wide by a 20 ft deep playing area in Green Oaks, IL. The master bathroom was accentuated with a large & luxurious teak walk-in shower which includes a custom bench by Jonathon Scianna, offering a spa-like feel. The bathtub was replaced to have a chic, elongated tile surround and built-in recessed teak niche. The final touch on the new tub comes from the mini recessed LED lights above, illuminating the area and adding a special feel to the space. We also installed a brand new floating double vanity with trendy wall mount faucets with a teak backsplash and teak framed mirrors, which look lovely against the metallic shimmer of the wall color. Additional features for the master bathroom include a new toilet, new floor, new barn door/mirror with Haffel Hardware, and a large linen closet with adjustable shelves. On the back wall of the kitchen, a notable change was removing the walls surrounding the pantry. Not only did this create a cleaner look, but it allowed for significantly more storage space inside the pantry. Freeing up storage space is the ultimate goal when you have a small kitchen! For that same reason, the lower cabinets were replaced with drawers. Often times, drawers are more efficient than lower cabinets because they allow you to use the entire space for storage, instead of having a lot of wasted space in the back of a large cabinet. Drawers are much easier to access and utilize for storing food items, cookware, and heavy dishes. The upper cabinets were also enhanced to optimize storage space, with the inclusion of adjustable shelving inside. The new upper cabinets feature a glass front and adjustable shelving, along with bright LED backlights inside. Below the counter, we installed deep pot drawers in place of the lower cabinets. Using drawers is a much more efficient use of space, making it easier to store and access items, particularly for aging homeowners. The same concept was considered in the decision to install an under-counter microwave drawer. This appliance is much safer and easier to use than a traditional microwave installed in upper cabinets (usually above the stove). It’s also a great alternative to setting a microwave on the counter as it reduces clutter and creates a sleek, clean look. Our designers always suggest anchoring the microwave drawer on the outside end of the kitchen to help traffic flow and prevent crowding in the cooking and prep areas.
