Pansies or Violas, whatever you want to call them, they are a true sign of spring. This photo shows the "Italian Ruffle" series, most folks are familiar with "Swiss Giants" and "Johnny-jump-ups", but they are all Violas. Some folks get them to reseed each year, need to be cleaned down the flower stem to encourage more buds and blooms.Lots of new series are being developed, but their smiling faces are definitely a sign of spring. Columbines can be found along some roadsides, but the newer varieties are fun and colorful. The breeding continues to create more bi-color varieties and combinations. Hyacinths are probably the least planted of all the spring bulbs. The fragrance is amazing, and the bees love them for their pollen, especially early in the season. Tall Phlox or P. paniculata is a late summer favorite for height in the perennial garden. the colors are numerous, newer introductions bloom earlier in summer and bloom into the fall. More mildew resistant varieties are available, and mid-size growth makes them more favorable since staking is not required. Pruning back in May-June will keep them shorter and fuller.
