Hellebore or Lenten Rose are named appropriately because they normally bloom during Lent. Many years they will bloom unnoticed under snow, but in a early spring, one can see bloom most of February- April. They are Deer proof, grow well in the shade and spread like crazy. Newer varieties are being developed, mainly different colors aside from the white-green or pink varieties . They are a growers challenge, since the plant takes twice as long as most perennials to make a retail ready plant. Primula species or Primrose as it's commonly known can be considered a herbaceous perennial. Most growers promote them as a flowering houseplant in January for flower starved folks to satisfy their "cabin fever". They are a little finicky and fussy about locations, and may fizzle out with a sunny exposure, so they are definitely part-shade and don't like wet feet.
