Whiskey barrel planter for a sunny location. Has all of the components of a "thriller, filler, spiller" combination. Whiskey barrels don't require as much watering due to the depth of a good potting soil mix like "Gardeners Gold" from Coast of Maine

This another example of perennials combined with annuals for low light location. Even after the Cimcifuga blooms, the foliage remains to carry our "thriller" component.

Hellebore or Lenten Rose are named appropriately because they normally bloom during Lent. Many years they will bloom unnoticed under snow, but in a early spring, one can see bloom most of February- April. They are Deer proof, grow well in the shade and spread like crazy. Newer varieties are being developed, mainly different colors aside from the white-green or pink varieties . They are a growers challenge, since the plant takes twice as long as most perennials to make a retail ready plant. The foliage is evergreen, so add them to your favorite container, along with daffodils and pansies, for an early season show stopper.

Primula species or Primrose as it's commonly known can be considered a herbaceous perennial. Most growers promote them as a flowering houseplant in January for flower starved folks to satisfy their "cabin fever". They are a little finicky and fussy about locations, and may fizzle out with a sunny exposure, so they are definitely part-shade and don't like wet feet. Once established, they need a little cleaning of yellow leaves and dead heading.

Here is a fall container that will last until the changeover to winter decorations. The Pennisetum is not hardy, but the addition of fall flowering plants that include Mums, Swiss chard, and pansies will last until a freeze occurs.
