This 5,200-square foot modern farmhouse is located on Manhattan Beach’s Fourth Street, which leads directly to the ocean. A raw stone facade and custom-built Dutch front-door greets guests, and customized millwork can be found throughout the home. The exposed beams, wooden furnishings, rustic-chic lighting, and soothing palette are inspired by Scandinavian farmhouses and breezy coastal living. The home’s understated elegance privileges comfort and vertical space. To this end, the 5-bed, 7-bath (counting halves) home has a 4-stop elevator and a basement theater with tiered seating and 13-foot ceilings. A third story porch is separated from the upstairs living area by a glass wall that disappears as desired, and its stone fireplace ensures that this panoramic ocean view can be enjoyed year-round. This house is full of gorgeous materials, including a kitchen backsplash of Calacatta marble, mined from the Apuan mountains of Italy, and countertops of polished porcelain. The curved antique French limestone fireplace in the living room is a true statement piece, and the basement includes a temperature-controlled glass room-within-a-room for an aesthetic but functional take on wine storage. The takeaway? Efficiency and beauty are two sides of the same coin.

The owners wanted a space, which could house and showcase their substantial art collection. Boldly turning the floor plan’s wall angles out of parallel to the exterior building envelope and creating a sculptural rounded room allowed for interesting continuous flow through the space and an intriguing visual play from one room to the next. The lighting, shade control, and ceiling heights were all optimally designed to showcase the artwork. Likewise, the simple yet tasteful furnishings do not compete with the art. Our client, a young executive in the cosmetics industry, wanted to take advantage of a very large, empty space between her house and pool to create a beautiful and functional outdoor living space to entertain family and clients, and to hold business meetings. Gayler Design Build, in collaboration with Jeff Culbertson/Culbertson Durst Interiors, designed and built this gorgeous Outdoor Great Room. She needed a place that could accommodate a small group of 8 for Sunday brunch, to a large corporate gathering of 35 colleagues. She wanted the outdoor great room to be contemporary (so that it coordinated with the interior of her home), comfortable and inviting.   Clear span roof design allowed for maximum space underneath and heaters and fans were added for climate control, along with 2 TVs and a stereo system for entertaining. The bar seats 6, and has a large Fire Magic BBQ and 2 burner cooktop, 2 under counter refrigerators, a warming drawer and assorted cabinets and drawers.

Reverse Shed Eichler This project is part tear-down, part remodel. The original L-shaped plan allowed the living/ dining/ kitchen wing to be completely re-built while retaining the shell of the bedroom wing virtually intact. The rebuilt entertainment wing was enlarged 50% and covered with a low-slope reverse-shed roof sloping from eleven to thirteen feet. The shed roof floats on a continuous glass clerestory with eight foot transom. Cantilevered steel frames support wood roof beams with eaves of up to ten feet. An interior glass clerestory separates the kitchen and livingroom for sound control. A wall-to-wall skylight illuminates the north wall of the kitchen/family room. New additions at the back of the house add several “sliding” wall planes, where interior walls continue past full-height windows to the exterior, complimenting the typical Eichler indoor-outdoor ceiling and floor planes. The existing bedroom wing has been re-configured on the interior, changing three small bedrooms into two larger ones, and adding a guest suite in part of the original garage. A previous den addition provided the perfect spot for a large master ensuite bath and walk-in closet. Natural materials predominate, with fir ceilings, limestone veneer fireplace walls, anigre veneer cabinets, fir sliding windows and interior doors, bamboo floors, and concrete patios and walks. Tom Holdsworth Photography The clients’ wish-list, for this mid-sized coastal master bathroom, was very specific. It was to have a light, airy, and open feeling; raised ceilings; a window in the shower area; a soaking tub; double sinks; inclusion of the clients’ stained-glass window; and specialty tile. To create this light, airy, and open feeling, half of the old interior wall [hiding the old shower area] was removed. In its place, is an open shower. Water flows from a large rain showerhead mounted on the raised ceiling. The floor under the showerhead slopes, on all four sides, so that water can funnel into the floor drain. The shower window [with obscure glass, to bring in more light], shower bench, recessed-shampoo niche, and electronic temperature-control unit [on the wall panel] add to the shower’s ambiance and serviceability. Unique details, that balance and enhance the dynamics of the bathroom, include: quartz solid-surface material on top of the shower bench, undermount tub, and undermount sinks’ counter-top; vintage-styled light fixtures over the two sinks; grey recessed-paneled linen and vanity cabinets, that compliment the white walls and vertical tiles; dark ceramic flooring; large-awning windows that swing open; pivot mirrors; a colorful-interior stained-glass window, that can be seen from both the new bath and adjacent master bedroom; and a specialty tile [of a person relaxing in a tub] positioned flush with the large-white wall tiles. After seeing the original bathroom, it is hard to imagine, that this renovation includes all of the Broadwater’s wish list. They are more than satisfied with their new crisp, clean, airy space.

Concrete has the ability to blend with all kinds of styles. The home has a rustic/contemporary feel and Dancer Concrete Design was able to complete the look with polished natural gray concrete. Many times, clients request a highly reflective, high-shine floor. In this case, we wanted a floor that looked natural and soft so it was finished to a 200-Grit level that is still very strong, but did not have a modern shiny look. While color was not added to the concrete itself, the control joints were filled with a warm stone filler. This polished floor flows throughout the kitchen and into the pantry and dinning area. It compliments the home and creates a unified look.

This white kitchen is so fresh with a deep contrasting teal walls. Just a few cabinets have bead board which keeps it light. Behind the extended wall that holds the refrigerator is a shallow pantry storage, leaving a traffic pattern that flows to the laundry room.
