An elevated septic system has been regraded and replanted with native species to more fluidly blend with the undulations of the natural landscape, while a fountain and reflecting pool mark the level of the 100-year flood, to which the site is susceptible. As with every client, our goal was to create a truly distinct home that reflected the needs and desires of the homeowner while exceeding their expectations. The modern aesthetic was combined with warm and welcoming hill country features like the white limestone exterior in a coarse linear pattern, knotty alder slab front cabinets in the kitchen and dining, and light wood flooring throughout. Stark, clean edges were balanced with rounded and curved light fixtures as well as the limestone cladding fireplace surround in the family room. While the design was pleasing to the eye, measures were taken to ensure a sturdy build including steel lintel window header details, a fluid-applied flashing window treatment to prevent water infiltration, LED recessed can lighting, high-efficiency windows with LowE glass coatings, and spray foam insulation. The backyard was specifically designed for entertaining in the Texas heat with a covered patio that offered multiple fans and an outdoor kitchen.

Kowalske Kitchen & Bath: Kitchen and Powder Room Remodel The remodeling goal was to update the overall look of the outdated kitchen and powder room bath, enhance functionality, create more storage, and accommodate the lifestyle of a busy family. To accomplish the established goals, the kitchen was gutted, with soffits, a wall, and several cabinets removed. This created more storage with efficient cabinet organizers, an oversized island, a pantry, and taller upper cabinets. Between the living room and kitchen, the plumbing was reworked from the upper level into a single column, with a peninsula added to create more counter space. Opening up the area that was once divided allows better interaction between the kitchen and living room, while the peninsula defines the space without hindering the overall functionality. The powder room received a makeover of a new furniture vanity and fixtures. Traditional design elements were used to maintain the style of the home, yet stand up to heavy use. The maple cabinetry is a combination of a paint with glaze on the surrounding cabinets, complimented by a glazed stain on the island. Different quartz countertop colors, thicknesses, and edge profiles were combined as well. Glass and iron lights above the island keep the space feeling open, while layers of general and task lighting create a comfortable workspace. The custom stained wood flooring and new base moulding gives a fluid feeling to the entire main level.

Stunning remodel addition on a historical home is one that will turn heads. The clients needed a grand space for entertaining, and our designer was able to give just that. You are able to see the custom carbon colored cabinets with raised center panel and beaded inset for a fluid look. This kitchen conceals the refrigerator and dishwasher using custom cabinetry. Your eyes can’t miss the cherry island with mahogany stain to give drastic contrast from carbon colored upper cabinets. The Cloud Villa is so named because of the grand central stair which connects the three floors of this 800m2 villa in Shanghai. It’s abstract cloud-like form celebrates fluid movement through space, while dividing the main entry from the main living space. As the main focal point of the villa, it optimistically reinforces domesticity as an act of unencumbered weightless living; in contrast to the restrictive bulk of the typical sprawling megalopolis in China. The cloud is an intimate form that only the occupants of the villa have the luxury of using on a daily basis. The main living space with its overscaled, nearly 8m high vaulted ceiling, gives the villa a sacrosanct quality. Contemporary in form, construction and materiality, the Cloud Villa’s stair is classical statement about the theater and intimacy of private and domestic life.

Photography by Catherine Tighe This 1890s tenement apartment, also known as a cold water flat, was ripe for a renovation. With a shower and toilet/sink located at opposite ends and a cooktop in the living room, the railroad layout was a disjointed jumble in need of coherent modernization. Our first step was to move the poche -- the cluster of plumbing and storage space -- into one centralized location. We created a European-styled bathroom with a Carrara marble stall shower and a space-saving wall-hung toilet. Opposite the bathroom are built-in closets constructed to detailed specification to accommodate the couple's wardrobe. The resulting corridor space acts as a fluid connector between the apartments's public living area and the private bedroom. Open walnut shelving in the kitchen lends a "floating" appearance to stacked dishes and glassware, while concealed, small-sized appliances maintain the sleek look. The stove and refrigerator are installed on the stairwell wall, so that the exposed brick of the opposite wall appears to flow through the unit. The living room fireplace was restored to working condition while the bedroom fireplace, a likely fire hazard located so close to the foot of the bed, was ingeniously fitted with a custom shoe cabinet.
