These Marble tiles were installed at a lovely property in North Ferriby by another tile company who although has done a great job laying the floor had neglected to provide the owner with any kind of post-installation maintenance.
Thus the tiles, which covered a large kitchen and hallway area, appeared dull and certainly not up to the standard that could be achieved with the right methods. Funnily enough, the tile company had told the property owner that the stone would need to be sealed, but did not offer to carry out the process themselves.
After conducting their own research, the property owner contacted her local Tile Doctor to see what could be done. I came round to inspect the floor and recommended the floor was polished through a process known as burnishing, followed by the application of a sealer to provide durable protection for the stone.
Burnishing involves the application of diamond encrusted pads with different levels of grit. At Tile Doctor we work with a four pad system that allows us to gradually refine the polish on suitable tiled floors, including Marble and Limestone.
I started the process by applying a Coarse grit burnishing pad across the entire floor lubricated with a little water, the 17 inch pads fit a rotary floor buffing machine and so are relatively straight forward to use but do take time. Following this, I worked my way through the burnishing system, repeating the process with Medium, Fine and Very Fine grit burnishing pads to achieve a brilliant, consistent shine. The floor is given a quick rinse between pads in-order to remove the resultant slurry before starting with the next pad.
The second part of the restoration was to seal the floor to protect the stone against future dirt, stains and damage, which is more common in busy areas of a house like the kitchen. I opted to seal the Marble tiles with two coats of Tile Doctor Ultra Seal.
This is a premium, no-sheen sealer that leaves the Marble with a more natural looking polished appearance. As a solvent-based, penetrating sealer it gets deep into the pores of the stone to protect against stains and ingrained dirt, especially in food preparation areas. To finish off I used the very fine diamond pad just to guarantee the brilliant shine you can see in the photos.
The property owners were exceptionally pleased with the results achieved and will undoubtedly be glad that their lovely Marble tiled flooring is now protected for long-term use. Another satisfied client.

There are thousands of tree species all over the world and all these trees share the same anatomical features. All trees have trunks, branches, intricate rooting systems and leaves that make up their core systems. If you are curious about the anatomy and importance of each part, reading this guide by Five Star Tree Services is a great way to educate yourself.
Tree Branches & Twigs
The branches grow from the trunk of the tree and they help support the flowers, fruits and leaves the tree produces. The twigs and branches are also used as transport between the trunk and leaves. The top part of the tree along with the leaves is called the tree crown. This area filters dust and other debris from the atmosphere. In addition to cleaning the air, the crown also offers shade for animals and humans alike.
Tree Leaves
The leaves of a tree manage the photosynthesis process which ensures the tree has food and maintains its health. The leaves are also tasked with drawing in carbon monoxide and releasing oxygen for the rest of us to use. Many leaves have different edges which work to collect water, repel pests, and reduce wind resistance.
The Tree Trunk
The trunk of every tree has five layers. These layers consist of the inner bark, the outer bark, heartwood, sapwood, and cambium cell. The outer bark protects from harsh temperatures and pests, in addition to helping the tree retain moisture.
The inner bark, specifically the phloem is the digestive system that passes the food through to other parts of the tree. This part of the tree has a very short life, and it turns into cork before merging with the outer layer of bark when it dies. The cambium cell layer produces new tree bark and wood as the tree grows and this is generated from the hormones that come from the leaves and pass to the inner layer.
Sapwood is tasked with moving water to the leaves of the tree and as the wood ages, it transforms into heartwood, which is in the tree center. The heartwood is the main support of the tree structure and though it no longer grows, it won’t decay or become frail as long as it is protected by the outer layers.
The Tree Root System
One of the most important parts of the tree is its root system. These are found in the first three feet of soil around the tree and can extend as much as four times further away than the total circumference of the tree crown. The roots collect minerals and water from the ground, store food for the tree, and help secure it to its spot in the ground.

A bento box is more than just a lunch container—it’s a reflection of Japanese culture, mindful eating, and balanced nutrition. Traditionally used in Japan, bento boxes have gained global popularity due to their practicality, aesthetic appeal, and ability to promote healthy eating habits.
What Is a Bento Box?
A bento box is a single-portion packed meal, neatly arranged in a compartmentalized container. The word “bento” originates from the Chinese term meaning convenient, which perfectly describes its purpose. A typical bento includes rice or noodles, protein like fish, meat, or tofu, and a variety of vegetables or side dishes, all placed in separate sections to maintain flavor and presentation.
Cultural Significance of Bento Boxes
In Japan, bento boxes represent care, effort, and balance. Parents often prepare bento meals for their children as a symbol of love, while office workers rely on them for nutritious meals during busy days. Special versions like ekiben (railway station bento) and character bento (decorated meals shaped like animals or cartoons) highlight the creativity and cultural importance of bento-making.
Health Benefits of Using a Bento Box
One of the biggest advantages of a bento box is its role in portion control and balanced nutrition. Since the box has fixed compartments, it encourages variety without overeating. A well-prepared bento typically follows the principle of:
40–50% carbohydrates
30–40% vegetables
20–30% protein
This balance helps maintain energy levels, supports digestion, and reduces the reliance on unhealthy fast food.
Modern Bento Boxes and Their Uses
Today’s bento boxes are designed to suit modern lifestyles. They are available in microwave-safe, leak-proof, and eco-friendly materials such as stainless steel, BPA-free plastic, and bamboo fiber. Many come with insulated layers, sauce containers, and cutlery, making them ideal for:
Office lunches
School meals
Travel and picnics
Fitness and meal-prep routines
With the rise of sustainable living, reusable bento boxes also help reduce single-use plastic waste.
Bento Boxes in Everyday Life
Bento boxes are no longer limited to Japanese cuisine. People worldwide use them to pack Indian, Western, vegan, or keto meals. From chapati and sabzi to pasta and salads, bento boxes adapt easily to different food preferences while keeping meals fresh and organized.
Why Bento Boxes Are So Popular Today
The popularity of bento boxes is driven by busy schedules, health awareness, and social media trends. Platforms like Instagram and Pinterest showcase beautifully arranged bento meals, inspiring people to eat better and enjoy the process of food preparation. They combine functionality, aesthetics, and mindfulness, making meals more enjoyable.
Conclusion
A bento box is a smart and stylish way to enjoy homemade meals while staying healthy and organized. Whether you’re looking to improve your diet, save money, or reduce environmental impact, a bento box offers a simple yet effective solution. With its deep cultural roots and modern versatility, the bento box continues to be a timeless companion for everyday meals.

I received an enquiry from a property in Crowthorne to come and survey an unknown Flagstone Floor in a converted barn that was ready to be rented out. The owners where concerned the stone was letting the rest of the property down due to it being dirty and heavily stained, particularly around the kitchen and entrance areas. If your selling or renting out a property it really needs to look its best if you want to achieve a good price. Having spoken over the phone we agreed a date for me to pop over to complete a survey.
From further inspection I confirmed the stone was in fact a Sandstone, it was also clear that the sealer protecting the stone from ingrained dirt had worn away and was now allowing dirt and staining to ruin the appearance of the flagstones. It was a large floor so I measured up so I could work out the quantities of cleaning and sealing products needed and then walked the customer through the cleaning process. Later that day I sent over a detailed quotation which was accepted, and a date agreed for my return.
I should mention this work took place during the Covid restrictions, fortunately being a rental property, I was able to work in the property alone.
To deep clean the floor and remove the ingrained dirt and staining I used a strong dilution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean. It is sprayed onto the floor and left to soak in for five minutes before agitating with a Black scrubbing pad fitted to a weighted buffing machine. The resultant slurry was then wet extracted away using a powerful high-pressure van mounted extracting system.
This action cleaned up most of the stone nicely however certain areas where heavily stained, particularly in the kitchen area where food and drink stains were more apparent. To tackle this, I applied a stronger cleaner/stripper product called Tile Doctor Remove and Go this time allowing ten minutes for it to soak in before scrubbing the surface with a very coarse 100-grit soft milling pad. This took quite a few attempts each time extracting the slurry away and then inspecting the floor to see if more work was needed.
Happy the stains have been removed, I then focused on renovating the surface Sandstone after the application of the coarse pad. This involves the application of several finer grit burnishing pads which close the pores and adds a subtle polish to the Sandstone. As I started with 100-grit pad it was necessary to gradually refine the surface with an incremental series of pads that included 200, 400 and finally 800-grit pads. Then to ensure a uniform finish across the floor I continued the 400 and 800 grit pads throughout the property. Water is used to lubricate the process and this turns into a fine slurry that is rinse extracted as before.
The cleaning process took up the whole of the first day and I am pleased to say the Sandstone floor looked very clean after I had finished.
The stone was then allowed dry off overnight with the aid of an industrial air mover and I returned later the next day to apply a new protective seal. In the meantime, my customer had been over to check out the floor and were over the moon with how it looked and wanted to keep the finish as natural as possible.
With this in mind, I applied Tile Doctor Ultra-Seal sealer to the Sandstone throughout, only two coats were needed. This is a premium sealer that is almost invisible and works by penetrating the stone thus preventing dirt from becoming ingrained. Once done the floor looked very clean and much brighter than before, it now had that wow factor which will help it attract a good yield in the rental market.
The trouble with rental properties of course is making sure the tenant uses the right product to maintain the floor and not a typical supermarket tile cleaner that are only designed for use on Ceramic and Porcelain tiles. In fact, these types of cleaning product can slowly strip the sealer off the floor so it’s always worth checking the label before purchasing. Fortunately Tile Doctor sells a product called Neutral Cleaner that is ideal for maintaining sealed stone floors, so I left them with a complimentary bottle and recommended they get some more to leave under the sink for the new tenant.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The customer requested a gargantuan 39 ½ foot wide x 11 ½ foot projection, attached 3 span (2 post) water proof retractable dining area patio cover system with front water drainage. The plan was to have rain water drain through the optional downpipes and off the 3rd story deck. The entire system used one continuous piece of fabric and one motor. The system frame and guides are made entirely of non-rusting aluminum (unit is close to the Caribbean Sea) which is powder coated using the Qualicoat® powder coating process. Frame color chosen was RAL 1013 Ivory. The stainless steel components used were Inox (470LI and 316) which are of the highest quality and have an extremely high corrosion resistance (unit is near the sea). In fact, the components meet the European salt spray corrosion test as tested by Centro Sviluppo Materiali in Italy.
Fabric specified was Ferrari 302 Precontraint Color Salmone, a PVC fabric that is self-extinguishing (fire retardant) and totally water-proof (not water-resistant). This retracting patio cover system has a Beaufort wind load rating Scale 8 (up to 46mph) with the fabric fully extended and in use. This Beaufort wind load requirement was important due to high winds coming off the sea.
A brown hood with end caps was also used to prevent rain water, leaves and debris from collecting in the folds of fabric when not in use. A motor safety box with motor was attached to the wall. The client chose to control the system with a Somfy remote control.
PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT
The purpose of the project was to design and cover an elegant dining area, which can now be used 24/7/365 allowing for breakfast, lunch, dinner, parties, entertainment and at the same time not blocking the incredible Belize mountain views and enjoying the cool trade wind breezes. The Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge is known worldwide for its outstanding hospitality and service and was included in an online Belize travel story completed by Justin Balog a photographer, filmmaker, storyteller, and explorer of the creative frontier - freelancer for National Geographic. Click on the link below:
http://www.hossedia.com/travel/photographers-guide-to-belize/
The Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge is tourist friendly and offers intimate dining areas, such as under their retractable deck cover system. You can sit on the deck and listen to the sounds of the creek and watch the birds come alive. The lodge is in the perfect location on a gently sloping terrace along the Sibun River basin and surrounded by the Maya Mountains. Prominently overlooking the site is the majestic Sleeping Giant Mountain from where the lodge gets its name.
Belize is a fascinating melting pot of people and that is reflected in the food, a delicious blend of Belizean, Central and North American cuisine. Now the food can be enjoyed under a waterproof (not water resistant) retractable cover system that provides heat, glare, UV, sun and heavy rain protection and most importantly shade protection.
PROJECT COMPLEXITY AND UNIQUENESS
The project, product and installation were not complicated. What was a challenge was the location. The restaurant is located in gorgeous Belmopan, Belize, Central America. Since ocean freight is not available from Europe directly to Belize the product had to be shipped to Miami, Florida, unloaded and then re-shipped to Belize. The other challenge was hoisting all the extrusions and fabric to the 3rd floor of the lodge without damaging the wood or construction of the lodge.
PROJECT RESULTS
The client is ecstatic with the results of their retractable patio cover system. The retractable patio cover now makes it possible for the client and the lodge patrons to use a very large deck area throughout the year as the area is now protected from sun, UV, glare, heat, heavy rains and even hail. All customer requirements and goals were achieved within budget and on time.

Located in Burgh Castle West of Great Yarmouth, this Travertine stone floor was a classic example of an incomplete installation. By incomplete I mean the tiler had done a fine job of laying and grouting the tiles but had left it at that and not sealed the stone. Natural stone like Travertine is porous and needs a sealer to stop dirt becoming ingrained in its pores, a sealer will also improve its appearance.
Without a sealer this floor now looked very dull, pale, rather damaged with pitting and heavily soiled with ingrained dirt. Pitting in stone like this is a natural feature of Travertine however it can be exacerbated with the use of acid cleaning products. This was a floor in urgent need of a face lift, and I was confident it could be transformed into a very beautiful floor.
I think it is true to say that most tilers will skilfully lay a floor for you but usually don’t have the knowledge, experience or equipment to finish the surface properly and when it comes to sealing many will recommend a product and suggest you take care of it yourself. Naturally if your find yourself in that position don’t insist the tiler does it, better to give us a call and have it done properly.
Our first job was to backfill the larger pits in the stone which as I mentioned are a natural feature of travertine material, but they can trap dirt and so its best if they are plugged with a suitably rigid filler. Also, if left alone the larger holes can quickly become larger as their edges crumble and break up leading to the entire tile becoming unstable. Replacing a tile in a floor like this is possible however its an extremely awkward job to do and it can be difficult to find an exact match for replacement.
Filling was done using a two-part, neutral cream-coloured polyester compound which gels in about fifteen minutes after addition of the catalyst. After this initial period, the excess product is trimmed off level with the surface of the tile before it sets harder than the stone itself in around sixty minutes. The fully cured compound can then be cut and machined as though it were part of the stone structure.
Our second job was to remove deep scratches caused by the unprotected feet of workmen’s ladders. This was done using Tile Doctor 50-grit and 100-grit diamond hand burnishing pads with a little water as a cutting medium. Shallower scratching present across the rest of the floor was removed using a Tile Doctor 200-grit soft milling pad driven by our Klindex 17″ rotary machine.
This abrasive action produces a fine slurry which was then rinsed with water and extracted using our 400psi Ninja machine in preparation for the next stage of the refinishing process. These machines were an expensive investment for our business however they are very robust and effective producing a good result that saves time.
Next task was to restore the polished appearance of the Travertine which was done using the application of a set of Tile Doctor burnishing pads. The process starts by applying a coarse 400-grit diamond pad, again fitted to the Klindex rotary machine. This cleans the tile and improves the matt finish left by the milling pad; again, the slurry was rinse-extracted before moving on to the next pad in the set. Next came the finer diamond polishing stages of 800 grit and 1500 grit, slurry being removed as before between the grades. By this time, all the scratches had been removed and the Travertine floor had visually pleasing even sheen across the whole surface. The last pad in the set is applied dry with a little water sprayed onto the tile so we left the area to dry out thoroughly overnight with the assistance of our large capacity dehumidifier.
Returning the following morning, we found that the floor had dried out perfectly and was ready to be vacuumed and spray burnished with the last pad in the set which is a 3000-grit very fine pad applied using a small amount of water sprayed from a trigger bottle resulting in a deep, rich shine across the floor surface.
Last step in the face lift was to seal the floor with a generous coat of Tile Doctor Ultra-Seal, a premium grade penetrating sealer recommended for use in Kitchens and food preparation areas. Having left the floor to soak up as much of the Tile Doctor Ultra-Seal as it could, the excess product was removed and the whole area allowed to dry completely with the assistance of our industrial air moving fan. Finally, the floor was spray buffed to a deep shine using a white maintenance pad.
The client was extremely pleased with our results and was amazed at the variation of colours within the stone which had never been visible previously.

The best kitchen design begins with the goal of enhancing functionality. We were looking for the shortest distance from fridge to stove to sink. This is known as the “golden triangle” of kitchen design. We also wanted the food preparation process to flow in one direction: From food storage to preparation to cooking to cleaning. This is the ideal kitchen flow because it eliminates traffic jams and keeps fresh food safer by moving from cold to warm.
One side of the island allows comfortable seating for four, while the other side boasts spacious storage with 2 deep drawers and 5 cabinets, as well as two key appliances. The photo above shows how food preparation traffic moves from the fridge to island to range and finally sink and dishwasher. The golden triangle in action!
An Avallon beverage center is located on the “cold foods” side of the island. This stainless-steel under-counter split-zone refrigerator is sure to please every wine and beer enthusiast. The left side is cooled to 58 degrees for wine, while the right side cools down to 34 degrees for beer. Both sides feature pull-out shelves, and each side is lockable for safety.
Moving down to the “warm foods” side of the island is a Thermador microwave drawer, which has easy access from above. We also chose Thermador for our fridge, ovens, gas range and dishwasher.
