Great room - eclectic dark wood floor great room idea in New Orleans with white walls, a standard fireplace and a brick fireplace

The owners of this traditional home sought to update and expand their somewhat dated and crowded kitchen. The former kitchen had a corner sink and a modified U-shape, but with the only entry intersecting the refrigerator and bar passage, it did not allow for multiple cooks in the kitchen. The existing kitchen was separated from the family room by a wall which included a see-through fireplace, but in reality the two areas were distinctly separate. As this family enjoys cooking and entertaining, they sought to open the space to accommodate a large island in the kitchen and opening the space to the adjoining family room. Additionally, they wanted the cooking surfaces and appliances to be state of the art, but with a style reminiscent of Tuscany.
To achieve the effect, color groups and materials were selected to create the Tuscan region’s theme. Round shapes were included throughout the space including the island top and the custom archway opening to the family room. The owners selected cherry cabinetry with a dark brown stain, granite counters with some hues of blue-green, and a natural stone tumbled subway tile backsplash. The island color is fossil beige, and the owners re-purposed their existing bar stools using the same color. With the serious emphasis on cooking, the range selected is a 36” gas Thermador® with custom exhaust hood. A separate Thermador® baking oven and microwave are built-in on the adjoining wall. Bela Cera® hand-scraped hardwood flooring ties together the kitchen, eating area, and family room.
The existing stone fireplace was taken down and set aside for re-installation at project completion. As the wall separating the kitchen and family room was eliminated, the stone fireplace has been reinstalled at its new location on the home’s east-wall. Windows and built-in cabinetry flank the fireplace, with the flat screen mounted above it. With added windows, additional can lighting, and antique white trim, the rooms are bright and airy.

Despite a tight budget and very little time, we were able to transform this teenager’s bedroom into a mature grown-up space that is serene and restful. This one-day makeover was achieved simply by rearranging the furniture, adding new pillows, and by borrowing a few accessories from other rooms in the house.
We started by moving the bed in front of the windows, which made the bedroom look more spacious and created a strong focal point. We kept all of the existing bedding and simply replaced the colorful purple duvet with a large white throw we bought at IKEA. Adding cushions with earthy colors, combined with a Buddha and greenery, helped create a peaceful resting space. In the “before” picture, the night table was hiding beside the bed, now it draws attention and provides the perfect surface on which to display accessories and a table lamp. As for the walls, we switched the purple and white flower artwork for a more abstract piece that ties in nicely with the colors from the throw pillows.
We borrowed a nesting table from the living room and draped it with a sheepskin to add softness and warmth to the room and also brought in tall faux spring blooming branches to add height to the space. The bright green decorative stool injects a pop of color to the room and ties in nicely with the bohemian-inspired pillow. We moved the brown leather bench to the foot of the bed to break up the white-on-white bedding and to create the perfect catch-all to throw clothes on at the end of a long day.
Tip: Adding a touch of black in the room as we did with the lampshade, vase, and bed frame breaks up the neutral color palette and gives the space a touch of elegance.
With only a few hours and a small budget we created an inviting, peaceful and zen-like space, perfect to catch up on beauty sleep.

The master bedroom furniture was a custom design concept that was created. The headboard is mounted on to the wall and it was made from a slab of solid walnut. The nightstands and platform bed frame were created from another piece of solid walnut. The headboard is not just a headboard, but a piece of art.

The Quarry Mill's Silver Cloud natural thin stone veneer looks stunning on the exterior of this beautiful home. Silver Cloud is an elegant dimensional stone with semi-consistent color tones including light blue/grey, buff and soft charcoal. The thin stone veneer showcases the interior part of the natural quarried limestone that has been split with a hydraulic press. One of the neat and unique things about Silver Cloud is there are some visible fossils within the stone. This natural stone veneer is dimensional cut into heights of 2.25”, 5” and 7.75”. Larger heights are available upon request. The stone is shown with a standard half-inch grey raked mortar joint between the individual pieces.

Custom drawers allow storage around the drain.
