Referencing the wife and 3 daughters for which the house was named, four distinct but cohesive design criteria were considered for the 2016 renovation of the circa 1890, three story masonry rowhouse: 1. To keep the significant original elements – such as the grand stair and Lincrusta wainscoting. 2. To repurpose original elements such as the former kitchen pocket doors fitted to their new location on the second floor with custom track. 3. To improve original elements - such as the new "sky deck" with its bright green steel frame, a new kitchen and modern baths. 4. Summary of a Versatile, Decked-Out Screen Room Premium Zuri decking and wrought iron handrails are just two of the many features that make this Bowie, Maryland screened porch so unique. Developed in a close-quarters community with large single family homes, it utilizes black railings that curve outwards along a rounded deck profile to enhance the sense of space one gets when on top of the deck or inside the porch. The decking itself is shaped to the contours of the property limits. Motorized retractable screens turn the Zuri deck into a fully-enclosed, bug protected seating and entertainment area at the push of a button. However, to achieve the versatility of a true four seasons outdoor living space, an outdoor fan and multiple infrared heaters were unobtrusively installed to the porch's ceiling as well. An army of lighting elements ensure that this deck can be used at any time of day. Multiple skylights allow light into the screen room during the day, while sconce lighting, mounted pillar fixtures, ceiling lights, and illuminated stained glass railing heads provide visibility on even the darkest nights. An existing screen porch area that got dirty, cold and windy in winter or too hot in summer. They could not enjoy the backyard and wanted a space in which they could feel more outdoors. We added a Four Seasons Sunrooms System 230 Aluminum walls under system to give a feeling of all glass that could convert to screens in seconds because all the windows are operable or removable in summer. This blended a technically modern sunroom in with the existing architecture and complimented their home.

Brunswick Parlour transforms a Victorian cottage into a hard-working, personalised home for a family of four. Our clients loved the character of their Brunswick terrace home, but not its inefficient floor plan and poor year-round thermal control. They didn't need more space, they just needed their space to work harder. The front bedrooms remain largely untouched, retaining their Victorian features and only introducing new cabinetry. Meanwhile, the main bedroom’s previously pokey en suite and wardrobe have been expanded, adorned with custom cabinetry and illuminated via a generous skylight. At the rear of the house, we reimagined the floor plan to establish shared spaces suited to the family’s lifestyle. Flanked by the dining and living rooms, the kitchen has been reoriented into a more efficient layout and features custom cabinetry that uses every available inch. In the dining room, the Swiss Army Knife of utility cabinets unfolds to reveal a laundry, more custom cabinetry, and a craft station with a retractable desk. Beautiful materiality throughout infuses the home with warmth and personality, featuring Blackbutt timber flooring and cabinetry, and selective pops of green and pink tones. The house now works hard in a thermal sense too. Insulation and glazing were updated to best practice standard, and we’ve introduced several temperature control tools. Hydronic heating installed throughout the house is complemented by an evaporative cooling system and operable skylight. The result is a lush, tactile home that increases the effectiveness of every existing inch to enhance daily life for our clients, proving that good design doesn’t need to add space to add value.

Inspiration for a large timeless open concept and formal dark wood floor and brown floor living room remodel in Toronto with a media wall, white walls, a standard fireplace and a tile fireplace

Vaulted ceilings add great volume to any space. Wood, granite, tile, modern fixtures, and great seating choices create a comfortable and functional look. Everyone will gravitate towards this island!

For many of us, our mudroom is often the first place we enter when arriving home. For our clients, a family of four with 2 young children, the mudroom had to be well designed with ample storage and an efficient lay-out. A combination of closed door and open shelving provides an abundance of storage and hanging space to house everything from boots, shoes, coats and miscellaneous gear. Ample shelving provides space for baskets of varying sizes to corral a plethora of smaller items. A generous cushioned bench for and decorative deer hooks installed above it for those easy to access items allows the family to hang and organize things and still have a space that looks clean and organized. Personal storage lockers with screen doors also provide a separated space for each person so that things can be easily stored, found and retrieved.

Popular Scandinavian-style interiors blog 'These Four Walls' has collaborated with Kährs for a scandi-inspired, soft and minimalist living room makeover. Kährs worked with founder Abi Dare to find the perfect hard wearing and stylish floor to work alongside minimalist decor. Kährs' ultra matt 'Oak Sky' engineered wood floor design was the perfect fit. "I was keen on the idea of pale Nordic oak and ordered all sorts of samples, but none seemed quite right – until a package arrived from Swedish brand Kährs, that is. As soon as I took a peek at ‘Oak Sky’ ultra matt lacquered boards I knew they were the right choice – light but not overly so, with a balance of ashen and warmer tones and a beautiful grain. It creates the light, Scandinavian vibe that I love, but it doesn’t look out of place in our Victorian house; it also works brilliantly with the grey walls. I also love the matte finish, which is very hard wearing but has none of the shininess normally associated with lacquer" says Abi. Oak Sky is the lightest oak design from the Kährs Lux collection of one-strip ultra matt lacquer floors. The semi-transparent white stain and light and dark contrasts in the wood makes the floor ideal for a scandi-chic inspired interior. The innovative surface treatment is non-reflective; enhancing the colour of the floor while giving it a silky, yet strong shield against wear and tear. Kährs' Lux collection won 'Best Flooring' at the House Beautiful Awards 2017. Design Builders designed and built this 16 x 22 four-season screened porch for a homeowner in Vienna, Virginia — located in Fairfax County. The client wanted to preserve the feel of their backyard while adding year-round outdoor living space. Design Builders achieved this using Sunspace WeatherMaster windows and Infratech infrared heaters, creating a fully functional four-season room. The project features Trex Transcend decking, a bronze SCREENEZE fiberglass screening system, Sunspace windows, a Larson screen door, ceiling fans, Infratech infrared heaters, helical piers instead of concrete post footers, and a vinyl beaded ceiling.
