This stately townhouse underwent a full renovation from both the DHD Architecture and Interiors team to provide a young family with rooms to grow into. Spaces were updated with contemporary furnishings and refined architectural details, while still honoring the classic, formal elements of the historic home. The expansive outdoor space is framed by the dining area’s floor to ceiling windows and bold window treatment. DHD’s interiors team aimed to transform the room into an inviting and livable space for the family, designing a custom kitchen banquette and using playfully bright, warm color tones. While the master bedroom keeps to a soft, muted palette incorporating deep shades of purples, the children’s rooms are extravagantly fun, complete with fuchsia bedding and oversized Lucite table lamps. Located in stylish Chelsea, this updated five-floor townhouse incorporates both a bold, modern aesthetic and sophisticated, polished taste. Palettes range from vibrant and playful colors in the family and kids’ spaces to softer, rich tones in the master bedroom and formal dining room. DHD interiors embraced the client’s adventurous taste, incorporating dynamic prints and striking wallpaper into each room, and a stunning floor-to-floor stair runner. Lighting became one of the most crucial elements as well, as ornate vintage fixtures and eye-catching sconces are featured throughout the home. The large windows in this vacation home living room designed by Colorado architect Dominique Gettliffe make for a comfy place to relax and unwind. The custom-built sofa faces toward an ultra-efficient wood-burning fire place. The living area is designed to be open and flexible, and is a great place for yoga, relaxing, or enjoying the warmth of the fire.

Thanks to builder, Frank Bodenchak, and our talented NYC Flagship Design Associate, Silvana Romano, our tile added a unique look and feel to each bathroom. In this master, our Max Fine Porcelain Statuary achieves a refined stone-look in large format panels.

This homeowner moved all of her wonderful furniture and accessories from her previous home in Atlanta, and it all fit beautifully in her new home. However, she needed window treatments to complete the spaces. In the Sitting Area, we added linen drapery panels with a classic Greek Key decorative tape running along the leading edge. We also added pillows to the sofa and a geometric rug to ground the coffee table. The homeowner did renovate the Kitchen when she purchased the home. It is a lovely classic white Kitchen so we added a punch of color in the bay area with our cornice boards. The oversized paisley pattern looks fabulous on the boards. All of the spaces are open to each other; however, we did go a little more formal in the Dining Area. This classic damask pattern on a linen fabric works perfectly with Sherwin Williams' Balanced Beige (SW7037) on the walls. We added the subtle patterned rug under the dining table which complements the beautiful runner in the Entry. In the Guest Bath, we added a faux flat valance in a fun medallion pattern. And don't forget about your Laundry Room. Since we have to be in there, we might as well make it warm and inviting like the rest of our house. Love the embroidered floral pattern on this fabric! Fabrics add warmth to any space and reinforce your color scheme. This was a great opportunity to complete this beautiful home. Enjoy!

Well, the answer (for once) is you can do both! Take a minute to think what characteristics each child displays and slot in favorite colors, tendencies toward frills or no-frills, introvert, extrovert, tomboy, girlie and combine with any functional needs you’ll need to accommodate. Dream up the style you’d like to portray the space in, and then divide and conquer with variations in PALETTE.

Winner of the 2018 Tour of Homes Best Remodel, this whole house re-design of a 1963 Bennet & Johnson mid-century raised ranch home is a beautiful example of the magic we can weave through the application of more sustainable modern design principles to existing spaces. We worked closely with our client on extensive updates to create a modernized MCM gem. Extensive alterations include: - a completely redesigned floor plan to promote a more intuitive flow throughout - vaulted the ceilings over the great room to create an amazing entrance and feeling of inspired openness - redesigned entry and driveway to be more inviting and welcoming as well as to experientially set the mid-century modern stage - the removal of a visually disruptive load bearing central wall and chimney system that formerly partitioned the homes’ entry, dining, kitchen and living rooms from each other - added clerestory windows above the new kitchen to accentuate the new vaulted ceiling line and create a greater visual continuation of indoor to outdoor space - drastically increased the access to natural light by increasing window sizes and opening up the floor plan - placed natural wood elements throughout to provide a calming palette and cohesive Pacific Northwest feel - incorporated Universal Design principles to make the home Aging In Place ready with wide hallways and accessible spaces, including single-floor living if needed - moved and completely redesigned the stairway to work for the home’s occupants and be a part of the cohesive design aesthetic - mixed custom tile layouts with more traditional tiling to create fun and playful visual experiences - custom designed and sourced MCM specific elements such as the entry screen, cabinetry and lighting - development of the downstairs for potential future use by an assisted living caretaker - energy efficiency upgrades seamlessly woven in with much improved insulation, ductless mini splits and solar gain
