Modern Warmth: A Custom Cabinetry Masterpiece
We recently completed a fully custom kitchen project that perfectly balances modern architectural precision with organic warmth. Every element was designed with longevity and user experience at the forefront.
Material & Aesthetic
The centerpiece of this build is the exquisite Shinnoki Frozen Walnut cabinetry. By utilizing a vertical grain-matching technique across the entire installation, we created a seamless, fluid aesthetic that anchors the room. The rich, natural tones of the walnut provide a beautiful, warm contrast to the clean, minimalist design.
Uncompromising Construction
Quality is found in the details that remain unseen. The cabinetry features robust 3/4" plywood box construction, ensuring structural integrity and a solid, premium feel. To elevate the daily interaction with the kitchen, we integrated:
Premium Motion-Activated LED Lighting: Subtle, intuitive illumination that brings the cabinetry to life the moment you step into the workspace.
Superior Hardware: Featuring Blum/Titus/Grass (as applicable) door hinges for a soft-close, refined movement, paired with the Nova Pro Scala drawer system in Stone, offering a sleek, high-end look with incredibly smooth operation.
Smart Functionality
We maximized every inch of available space by integrating clever, custom storage solutions, including:
Custom Kick Drawers: Utilizing the often-wasted toe-kick space for low-profile, high-utility storage.
Specialized Organization: A tailored spice rack system designed for effortless access.
Custom Hood: A bespoke hood design that ties the modern silhouette of the kitchen together.
This project is a testament to what is possible when high-grade materials meet thoughtful, custom engineering. It isn’t just a kitchen—it is a functional piece of art designed to evolve with the home.

An open floor plan kitchen renovation essentially merges your kitchen area with another living space, typically the dining room or living room, creating a more spacious and interconnected feel.
Opening Up the Space and Removing walls:
This is the key step, taking down non-load-bearing walls that separate the kitchen from the living or dining area. You'll want to consult a structural engineer to ensure any remaining walls can support the weight of the house.
Considering beams or columns:
Depending on the layout and size of the opening, you might need exposed beams or support columns to maintain structural integrity. These can be incorporated into the design as a stylish feature.
Kitchen Repositioning and Functionality:
Rethinking the work triangle: The work triangle refers to the refrigerator, sink, and stove - the most used areas in a kitchen. In an open plan, you'll want to ensure these elements remain close together for an efficient workflow. This might involve rearranging cabinetry or appliances.
Creating a focal point: An island is a popular choice in open concept kitchens. It can house the sink, cooktop, provide additional storage and counter space, and even offer seating for guests to chat while you cook. Peninsula counters can also be used for a similar effect.
Unifying Design Elements: Use consistent flooring throughout the open area to create a cohesive flow. You can also extend the same color scheme or material accents (like backsplash tile) from the kitchen into the adjoining space.
Letting in Light: Maximize natural light by incorporating large windows or skylights. This will brighten the entire open area and make it feel even more spacious.
Storage Solutions: With an open plan, you might lose some wall space for cabinets. Consider built-in storage solutions like pantry cabinets or creative mudroom cabinetry to ensure you have enough storage for your kitchenware.
An open floor plan kitchen renovation can be a transformative project, creating a light-filled and social space in your home. By carefully planning the layout, incorporating design elements that unify the space, and addressing practical considerations with lighting and storage, you can achieve a beautiful and functional open concept kitchen.

This bath hadn't been updated since the home was built in 1967. The room was gutted and the only thing salvaged was the original vanity, which was reworked to included two drawers and a pop-out drawer under each sink, as well as an open area in the center for a basket. A hutch was added up the center and mirrors to the ceiling. Stunning light sconces were added on each side of the right hand sink for makeup application.
New floor tile was laid in a unique pattern and glass tile was used in the combo tub/shower area. A new granite countertop, undermount sinks, and a sleek tub round out the new fixtures.
The door originally opened inward to the space and was hinged on the left, obstructing access to the closet behind in the eave. Demolition included removing the mildly functional closet and the door into the bathroom from the bedroom was hinged from the right and now swings into the bedroom.
The changes not only refreshed the room aesthetically but provided more functionality and more light to flow into and bounce around the room.

Project Overview:
This intensively-designed small project by MQ Architecture expanded on a functional outbuilding to make something beautiful, matching the fantastic wooded location directly across the Hudson River from West Point.
From MQ Architecture:
“This project entitled a surgical demolition of an existing shed and the erection of a small ancillary building. The old structure housed the electrical and communications utilities of a large compound, and the new project had to preserve the location and function of all this equipment, therefore some walls and floor levels are set from the beginning.
The program required two different type of users, therefore we decided to split the building in two, allowing for a separate circulation for each group. The upper piece houses the electrical room and the team quarters, while the lower portion holds two individual restrooms for visitors.
The project sits in the middle of the forest therefore we chose charred wood to make it blend with the surrounding nature. On the other hand, the polycarbonate façade brings natural light and privacy to the interior. All floors are made of polished concrete for easy maintenance and a radiant slab keeps an optimal temperature during extreme winters.”

Jarrett Design is thankful for digital preview technology. Good thing our clients were able to see what their
book-matched Dekton backsplash was going to look like prior to fabrication! Some may have been a bit frightened, but these folks love the drama it creates in the otherwise serene kitchen. High gloss white upper and tall cabinetry is beautifully grounded by dark stained oak bases and island. Our clients came to us as a busy family with a toddler and an infant. Healthy food preparation for all meals is one their main priorities, so the kitchen design had to be highly functional. Work zones, storage, and seating were carefully planned. This contemporary, two-toned kitchen is the perfect combination of functionality and durability, modern light and natural warmth.
