An open floor plan kitchen renovation essentially merges your kitchen area with another living space, typically the dining room or living room, creating a more spacious and interconnected feel.
Opening Up the Space and Removing walls:
This is the key step, taking down non-load-bearing walls that separate the kitchen from the living or dining area. You'll want to consult a structural engineer to ensure any remaining walls can support the weight of the house.
Considering beams or columns:
Depending on the layout and size of the opening, you might need exposed beams or support columns to maintain structural integrity. These can be incorporated into the design as a stylish feature.
Kitchen Repositioning and Functionality:
Rethinking the work triangle: The work triangle refers to the refrigerator, sink, and stove - the most used areas in a kitchen. In an open plan, you'll want to ensure these elements remain close together for an efficient workflow. This might involve rearranging cabinetry or appliances.
Creating a focal point: An island is a popular choice in open concept kitchens. It can house the sink, cooktop, provide additional storage and counter space, and even offer seating for guests to chat while you cook. Peninsula counters can also be used for a similar effect.
Unifying Design Elements: Use consistent flooring throughout the open area to create a cohesive flow. You can also extend the same color scheme or material accents (like backsplash tile) from the kitchen into the adjoining space.
Letting in Light: Maximize natural light by incorporating large windows or skylights. This will brighten the entire open area and make it feel even more spacious.
Storage Solutions: With an open plan, you might lose some wall space for cabinets. Consider built-in storage solutions like pantry cabinets or creative mudroom cabinetry to ensure you have enough storage for your kitchenware.
An open floor plan kitchen renovation can be a transformative project, creating a light-filled and social space in your home. By carefully planning the layout, incorporating design elements that unify the space, and addressing practical considerations with lighting and storage, you can achieve a beautiful and functional open concept kitchen.

The client requested a spa like feel with rustic influences to capture the ‘up north feel’. She also requested a desk/vanity for storage and function. We delivered on all points. The Century bed with a leather surround and branch posts combines today’s design influences with the great outdoors. The Bernhardt side chests and dresser provide plenty of storage while exhibiting style and convenience. The auto closure drawers and push style openings make this piece a gem. The lamps by Rejuvenation were the client’s pick and worked well with the furnishings. The waterfall area rug by Surya complete the look with warmth, comfort and color to coordinate client’s artwork over the bed. The built in vanity by Stillwater Cabinetry of Petoskey has plenty of storage space behind beautiful custom painted doors. The mirror hides medicine cabinet shelves for additional storage. The lighting emits perfect hues for applying make up and dressing table function. We had the plugs and switches installed inside the upper cabinetry for ease and application. I have used this style in numerous masters and it gets rave reviews from the homeowners. The finish is carried over into the master bathroom cabinetry and the Cambria quartz countertops combine the spaces for uniformity.

Jarrett Design is thankful for digital preview technology. Good thing our clients were able to see what their
book-matched Dekton backsplash was going to look like prior to fabrication! Some may have been a bit frightened, but these folks love the drama it creates in the otherwise serene kitchen. High gloss white upper and tall cabinetry is beautifully grounded by dark stained oak bases and island. Our clients came to us as a busy family with a toddler and an infant. Healthy food preparation for all meals is one their main priorities, so the kitchen design had to be highly functional. Work zones, storage, and seating were carefully planned. This contemporary, two-toned kitchen is the perfect combination of functionality and durability, modern light and natural warmth.

This bath hadn't been updated since the home was built in 1967. The room was gutted and the only thing salvaged was the original vanity, which was reworked to included two drawers and a pop-out drawer under each sink, as well as an open area in the center for a basket. A hutch was added up the center and mirrors to the ceiling. Stunning light sconces were added on each side of the right hand sink for makeup application.
New floor tile was laid in a unique pattern and glass tile was used in the combo tub/shower area. A new granite countertop, undermount sinks, and a sleek tub round out the new fixtures.
The door originally opened inward to the space and was hinged on the left, obstructing access to the closet behind in the eave. Demolition included removing the mildly functional closet and the door into the bathroom from the bedroom was hinged from the right and now swings into the bedroom.
The changes not only refreshed the room aesthetically but provided more functionality and more light to flow into and bounce around the room.

We were able to achieve the vision of this Owens Cross Roads home owner with a very specific honeycomb shade application. Very shallow recesses in the windows made an inside mount challenging. For most of the windows, we were able to accommodate with honeycomb shades that utilize a “floating” top and bottom rail that allows for a much “slimmer” installation than traditionally possible. For the larger windows, we incorporated a very flat-to-the-window shutter frame to make the installation possible.
The bonus realized is the top-down-bottom-up functionality that comes naturally with this application! Also, the versatility of honeycomb shades allows for room darkening fabric to block light in the media room, and light filtering fabric in other rooms where they want more light.

Located in the Sky Lofts building in Tribeca (once home to the most expensive apartment sale in NYC), our clients were ready to renovate and modernize their centerpiece kitchen. Due to the unique nature of loft renovations (high ceilings, columns, creative and skillful lighting applications, among other factors), Gallery’s expertise in loft spaces was vital to our clients. In addition to the loft particularities, it’s important in a kitchen of this size to ensure that all the elements have been laid out with purpose from a functional perspective and a design perspective.
CENTERPIECE KITCHEN
Color was an important design element in this kitchen. This is evident in the striking blues and grays of the marble countertops and backsplash, as well as the dark navy hue of the built-in cabinets. White lower cabinets create two-tone contrast, while glass cabinets and a long wood open shelf make the most of the available height.
The built-in cabinets also include built-in appliances: an espresso maker, coffee machine, two side-by-side wine fridges, and even an integrated refrigerator paneled to match the cabinetry for an essentially seamless look. The cabinets are all push-to-open, eliminating knobs to complete the overall sleek, contemporary style.
The marble backsplash is also book-matched, meaning the slabs of stone have been cut and polished to match each other, creating a mirroring effect that further contributes to the cohesive, contemporary aesthetic of this apartment.
BUILDING CONSIDERATIONS
Functional factors are another vital component to New York City apartment building renovations. In this particular project, we had to consider how to get large slabs of stone into the loft without having to cut them up. When working with slabs, and especially when the design is as sleek and contemporary as this one, it’s vital to eliminate seams as much as possible. Elevators and stairs are often not large enough to handle large slabs of stone, which means there are only two other options: cutting the stone and putting it back together on site (but this will create a seam, so it’s not always an option) or using a crane to bring it in through a window.
Higher-end buildings tend to have more restrictions and management companies with stricter renovation guidelines – with good reason. A good relationship with the super and staff of the building is absolutely essential; effective communication with everyone involved will result in an ideal outcome for all parties.
ARTFUL LOGISTICS
Seemingly minor elements such as apartment protections are also just as crucial. While every renovation will require protections in hallways, common spaces, zip walls, and perhaps the floors, those protections are doubled when renovating in an apartment that’s currently occupied. In the case of this particular client, who owned a great deal of valuable artwork in addition to their furniture and other belongings, Gallery exacted their own form of art when putting the protections in place and maneuvering around them with skill.
SOME HIGHLIGHTS
- Unique marble slabs (Azul Macauba quartzite and Calacatta Diamond quartzite) for the countertops and backsplash
- Book-matched backsplash
- Gaggenau appliances
- Glass cabinets with built-in lighting
- Custom millwork for the cabinets

The challenge for this project was to find materials that fit into the owners' architectural style, selfentitled "Texas Hill Country Contemporary"; warm and inviting, but also clean and contemporary. The architect and the owners were determined not to copy the typical "Tuscan" style so popular for upscale homes in the Austin area. The main feature of the house is the use of both indoor and outdoor spaces and is designed so that everyday life flows through all of the spaces. The material selections had to be compatible to color schemes inside and out, blending with the local cut stone used on the exterior of the house, but also functional in their application.
Interior flooring: AG&M furnished hone finish Selina Gold limestone tile from Egypt for the majority of ground floor paving. This material has a wide range of color, the selection was made from a particular quarry and a particular layer within that quarry.
Exterior paving, pool coping, fireplace facing: Goldstone granite was chosen because it performs well in exterior applications and has the soft coloring of limestone. The paving and coping is chisel finish and the outdoor fireplace is clad with split face Goldstone to match.
Kitchen countertops: Apollo Storm granite in a polish finish with matching full-height, endmatched backsplash.
