Example of a classic family room design in Minneapolis

San Marino based clients were interested in developing a property that had been in their family for generations. This was an exciting proposition as it was one of the last surviving bayside double lots on the scenic Coronado peninsula in San Diego. They desired a holiday home that would be a gathering place for their large, close- knit family. They desired a holiday home that would be a gathering place for their large, close-knit family. Facing the Back Bay, overlooking downtown and the Bay Bridge, this property presented us with a unique opportunity to design a vacation home with a dual personality. One side faces a bustling harbor with a constant parade of yachts, cargo vessels and military ships while the other opens onto a deep, quiet contemplative garden. The home’s shingle-style influence carries on the historical Coronado tradition of clapboard and Craftsman bungalows built in the shadow of the great Hotel Del Coronado which was erected at the turn of the last century. In order to create an informal feel to the residence, we devised a concept that eliminated the need for a “front door”. Instead, one walks through the garden and enters the “Great Hall” through either one of two French doors flanking a walk-in stone fireplace. Both two-story bedroom wings bookend this central wood beam vaulted room which serves as the “heart of the home”, and opens to both views. Three sets of stairs are discretely tucked away inside the bedroom wings. In lieu of a formal dining room, the family convenes and dines around a beautiful table and banquette set into a circular window bay off the kitchen which overlooks the lights of the city beyond the harbor. Working with noted interior designer Betty Ann Marshall, we designed a unique kitchen that was inspired by the colors and textures of a fossil the couple found on a honeymoon trip to the quarries of Montana. We set that ancient fossil into a matte glass backsplash behind the professional cook’s stove. A warm library with walnut paneling and a bayed window seat affords a refuge for the family to read or play board games. The couple’s fine craft and folk art collection is on prominent display throughout the house and helps to set an intimate and whimsical tone. Another architectural feature devoted to family is the play room lit by a dramatic cupola which beacons the older grandchildren and their friends. Below the play room is a four car garage that allows the patriarch space to refurbish an antique fire truck, a mahogany launch boat and several vintage cars. Their jet skis and kayaks are housed in another garage designed for that purpose. Lattice covered skylights that allow dappled sunlight to bathe the loggia affords a comfortable refuge to watch the kids swim and gaze out upon the rushing water, the Coronado Bay Bridge and the romantic downtown San Diego skyline. The original columned wood mantel with tile surround and mirror were stripped of paint and restored to its stained wood finish. Book shelves were added, creating a cozy new living room/library.

The family living in this shingled roofed home on the Peninsula loves color and pattern. At the heart of the two-story house, we created a library with high gloss lapis blue walls. The tête-à-tête provides an inviting place for the couple to read while their children play games at the antique card table. As a counterpoint, the open planned family, dining room, and kitchen have white walls. We selected a deep aubergine for the kitchen cabinetry. In the tranquil master suite, we layered celadon and sky blue while the daughters' room features pink, purple, and citrine.

The stacked stone fireplace surround is the focal point for this family room....and rightfully so...it is gorgeous. Also flanking the fireplace are built in cabinets, perfect for storing favorite books, games, DVD's and, of course, a smart TV. A great set-up for summer guests at the beach!

Amidst the literary treasures and bespoke furnishings, your eyes catch sight of a beautifully crafted game table nestled in the room. The table holds a marble chess board which invites friendly competition or leisurely games of chess on lazy afternoons. Perched atop the table are fresh flowers in a beautiful ceramic vase, their vibrant colors adding a pop of natural beauty to the space. The delicate fragrance of the blooms mingles with the scent of old books, creating a sensory experience that is both refreshing and nostalgic. In addition to the flowers, a lush green fern is strategically placed in the room, their verdant foliage adding a touch of life and vitality to the elegant surroundings. The potted fern gracefully in its ornate planter, it's presence bringing a sense of tranquility and connection to the natural world. As you take in the sight of the game table, adorned with fresh blooms and surrounded by verdant greenery, you can't help but feel a sense of contentment wash over you. This library room isn't just a place for reading and reflection; it's a sanctuary of comfort and beauty, where every detail has been carefully considered to create an atmosphere of luxury and relaxation.

Home was designed to be a formal house but was now being used as a weekend retreat. Ann Kenkel had to decorate the house in a manner which was coastal enough so owner's felt like they were on vacation yet formal enough for the style of the house. AK found the house filled with wallpaper from the 1980's. Wallpaper from every room was removed and all trim had to be painted a neutral color. The formal dining room only had one entry. AK opened up a second entry into the dining room which provided a view of the Chesapeake Bay. Three years after moving in this entertainment center was commissioned. Staggered heights and depths bring character and visual interest to this piece while cleverly hiding the A/V equipment, television screen, games and other non-decorative items. OL + expanded this North Shore waterfront bungalow to include a new library, two sleeping porches, a third floor billiard and game room, and added a conservatory. The design is influenced by the Arts and Crafts style of the existing house. A two-story gatehouse with similar architectural details, was designed to include a garage and second floor loft-style living quarters. The late landscape architect, Dale Wagner, developed the site to create picturesque views throughout the property as well as from every room.
