Our clients have a busy life so they wanted their inner city garden to be low fuss and look low fuss. They wanted outdoor spaces that looked relaxed, with a simple and soft palette of finishes that acknowledged their coastal location. The site conditions and their brief also called for plants that were hardy and that would tolerate the full sun and sandy soils. The structural finishes and the plant colours provide a harmonious blend and compliment the design choices of the interior.

Dogwoods or Shruby Cornus are grown for their vivid winter stem colour.Planted around a pond in groups of five or more with the low winter sun casting a shadow across the water, the vibrant coloured straight upright stems shine bright like torches. There are many varieties to choose from with a variety of stem colour from green, orange, yellow to deep reds.' Winter Flame' is a wonderful variety as is 'Midwinter Flame' and they will both brighten the dullest of winter days and even look good in the snow.

Bougainvillea climbs the wall in bright contrast to the creamy stucco, while a young magnolia anchors the corner with structure and seasonal blooms. A paved walkway leads past colorful perennials and groundcovers, opening to a small lawn framed by mature trees. The design balances vibrant planting with open space, offering both movement through the garden and areas to pause and enjoy the view.

A row of pleached ornamental pears (Pyrus chanticleer) and some strategically placed Beech trees provide privacy from several overlooking houses, this gives the space a feeling of green enclosure.
A bespoke Oak pergola draws the eye upwards whilst also giving cover from neighbouring properties. A spherical water feature is the central focus here with a backdrop of grasses and dogwoods.
Sawn ivory sandstone paving (Stonemarket Paleo) mirrors the interior ground floor of the house, bringing the inside out. This is contrasted by dark grey Baksteen pavers. Traditional materials used in a contemporary way mirror the architecture of the house.
Planting is loose and informal. To combat impoverished soil, raised beds were made to create two large feature Rose beds containing mass plantings of David Austin Rosa ‘Princess Anne’ and cheerful Mexican daisies (Erigeron karvinskianus) Winter structure is provided by Osmanthus and Ilex crenata.
A subtle lighting scheme extends the gardens use into the evening providing a stunning view from the house in the winter.

Play structure is subtly incorporated into the landscape, maintaining a natural, garden-forward aesthetic.

We wanted to create multiple functional spaces, perfect for them to entertain as they expressed to us their love of hosting. We designed two additional structures. A timber frame cabana with TV wall and fire feature create a large lounge space perfect for entertaining late into the evening. We worked with the original grade and added retaining walls with a lot of planting to separate the spaces and add green to the large interlock patios. Then, to anchor the dining space, a timber pergola provides some shade but mostly creates an intimate space for gathering.

Today's city living requires that exterior spaces serve as flexible, multi-purpose outdoor rooms. This patio was designed to suit the client's need for a gathering space, parking and increased privacy. A bluestone patio defined an outdoor dining room and enhanced the existing architectural vocabulary. A structural lawn, capable of bearing the weight of a truck, provided flexible parking. A grape trellis, matched with small evergreen shrubs, increased privacy while native plants were selected to attract birds and butterflies while reducing water use.
