our client came to us with a clear vision: to honor the home’s midcentury heritage while introducing a more modern, globally influenced sensibility. Originally designed in 1956 by George Saunders—an International Style architect and former Tulane professor—the home had great bones, but it needed a thoughtful transformation.
We focused on the kitchen, living room, entryway, and backyard, blending clean lines with rich material detail. To help realize their vision, we partnered with Bali-based Azula Designs to assure that international hands touched this space.
In the kitchen, Euro-style slab cabinetry conceals the appliances for a seamless, minimalist look. A custom island and dramatic 14-foot bookmatched stone wall create a sculptural centerpiece, with floating stone shelves lit from beneath for soft ambient glow. We embedded Prado flush outlets directly into the stone to preserve its uninterrupted surface.
To maintain open sightlines, we installed a downdraft range, eliminating the need for an overhead hood. A new floor-to-ceiling window floods the space with light and deepens the connection to the outdoors. Underfoot, hand-troweled concrete overlay floors in a warm bone tone bring texture and cohesion to the kitchen and living spaces.
The original stone chimney and walls were refinished in charcoal limewash, adding depth and a lived-in patina. And in a bold move, we replaced a rear hallway with a 27-foot glass curtain wall—transforming it into a light-filled art gallery corridor that opens to courtyard.
Just three doors down sits 15 Tern Street, a sister home also designed by Saunders for the Shalett family. That lineage is deeply personal—multiple generations of the Shaletts lived in both homes— with 1 Rail previously featured in the Preservation Resource Center’s Mid Mod NOLA tour.
Led by Sorrell Brown of Rellestate Renovations, alongside architect Michael Bosio and assistant architect Kevin Michniok—all Tulane alumni—this project brings a Tulane family legacy into its next chapter, staying true to our client’s vision every step of the way.

With three generations under the one roof, we were given the challenge of maximizing our clients’ layout and multitasking their beautiful living spaces so everyone in the family felt perfectly at home.
We used two sets of sofas to create a subtle room division and created a separate seated area that allowed the family to transition from movie nights and cozy evenings cuddled in front of the fire through to effortlessly entertaining their extended family.
Originally, the de Mayo’s living areas featured a LOT of space … but not a whole lot of storage. Which was why we made sure their restyled home would be big on beauty AND functionality.
We built in two sets of new floor-to-ceiling storage so our clients would always have an easy and attractive way to organize and store toys, china and glassware.

iFloors Kitchen & BathThis thoughtfully renovated flip was designed with both beauty and longevity in mind, featuring an ADA-accessible private suite tailored for aging in place. The layout was fully re-imagined to improve flow and daily functionality—most notably by opening up the main living areas and removing an outdated corner brick fireplace, allowing for smoother circulation and a brighter, more connected home.
The primary suite was significantly expanded to create a spacious bedroom, an oversized walk-in closet, and a serene master bathroom, transforming it into a true retreat. A new patio door was added to enhance indoor-outdoor connection and bring in natural light.
The kitchen was refreshed with a timeless black-and-white palette, elevated by champagne bronze hardware, updated lighting, and charming shiplap accents. A dedicated coffee bar adds both function and personality, making the space perfect for everyday living and entertaining.

Lars Remodeling & DesignAlthough sleek and modern, this Poway kitchen remodel was designed to incorporate many personal touches and balance clean lines with natural elements for the truly custom feel.
Opening the space up to the family room made a world of difference in terms of natural light for the entire space. A fan of Scandinavian design, the cabinetry’s minimalistic look is fresh, while the use of two colors - white and a gorgeous teal - provide the perfect contrast. The bar seating is perfect for entertaining yet also functional as this couple enjoys sharing coffee and meals together, while also utilizing it as a remote work space.
Accents of live-edge wood shelving can be found throughout, while a custom designed hutch was specifically created to showcase the client’s beautiful collection of crystal and glassware dating back generations.
E_ DesignsFew opportunities come about to design/ renovate a home designed by St Paul’s own Clarence H. Johnston. 785 Dayton, is the only known residential Greek Revival commission by Minnesota’s most prolific architect. Johnston, designed at least 42 mansions along St. Paul’s Historic Summit Avenue.
Looking for additional assistance, the new homeowner’s found Castle to help them design and renovate a main floor ½ bath and create a new master bathroom in the existing 2nd floor master bedroom. Creating spaces that married with the original style and aesthetic of this historic home was essential.
The brand new 2nd floor master bathroom was designed to complement an additional bathroom across the hallway. Taking an existing closet space, Castle was able to use the very small square footage to create a new bathroom that feels very spacious! New Carrera marble hex tiles floors were selected with a marble boarder to pair with the restored and hand-picked marble sink. Traditional subway tile was installed around the room and shower with a beautiful chair rail tile. The new linen closet was custom built by the homeowner’s personal cabinet maker. The storage was designed to match an original piece in the home, as well as provide function for the space. All of the details matter; push button electrical switching, new historically designed porcelain bath accessories by Rejuvenation Hardware, historically designed plumbing fixtures, solid marble shower curb and door threshold, salvaging the original closet door to be installed as a new pocket door, and salvaging the existing window.
Both bathrooms will be enjoyed for many generations to come and add to the beautiful history of the home. This home was a true joy for Castle to be a part of. Come visit this home at Castle’s Annual Educational Home Tour, Fall 2016.
Weninger Construction & Design LtdThis games room is truly a space for all ages to gather and have fun. Centrally located, it connects with the spa, home gym, and bootroom ensuring everyone has an opportunity to connect. Vibrant reds splash through the space, with the main event being the wet bar.
This space depicts the vibrant owner’s fun loving personality, with a unique blending of materials and accented with rustic wood and light industrial.
The corner built-in banquette is bar height and has a handmade table that ties together all the colours colours in the room. Metal legs give nod to the light industrial accents. The banquette’s leather seat cushions and channel backrest add comfort, and metallic wallpaper tiles brighten the corner. Higher seats allow visual connection to room, maintaining sightlines and conversation.
Fireplace sitting area feature 4 wingback chairs with cowhide accents and large low-back couch. The coffee table’s wooden ends can be pulled out and placed beside chairs to play individual games. Picture TV over the fireplace can add art or entertainment. Tufted leather couch becomes a showpiece.
Dart board fits nicely between pool table and couch, utilizing every inch of space.
Wall mounted big screen TV keeps everyone on-top of the big game.

Combined with sunset painting from a local artist, these pieces follow the mountaintop theme shown in the bar light fixture and connect to the décor in the rest of the home. This multi-generational gathering space connects multiple zones into one connected room.
ASR DESIGN STUDIOOur clients wanted to make the most of their new home’s huge floorspace and stunning ocean views while creating functional and kid-friendly common living areas where their loved ones could gather, giggle, play and connect.
We carefully selected a neutral color palette and balanced it with pops of color, unique greenery and personal touches to bring our clients’ vision of a stylish modern farmhouse with beachy casual vibes to life.
With three generations under the one roof, we were given the challenge of maximizing our clients’ layout and multitasking their beautiful living spaces so everyone in the family felt perfectly at home.
We used two sets of sofas to create a subtle room division and created a separate seated area that allowed the family to transition from movie nights and cozy evenings cuddled in front of the fire through to effortlessly entertaining their extended family.
Originally, the de Mayo’s living areas featured a LOT of space … but not a whole lot of storage. Which was why we made sure their restyled home would be big on beauty AND functionality.
We built in two sets of new floor-to-ceiling storage so our clients would always have an easy and attractive way to organize and store toys, china and glassware.
