Our client felt disorganized and disconnected in her old kitchen. She loves to cook but the layout of her kitchen did not allow her to move around comfortably. The space felt outdated and cluttered. She wished for a genuine connection to the outdoors. To accomplish all this we expanded the space and designed the custom glass doors that blurred the boundary between indoor and outdoor. Our landscape designers created an outdoor space surrounded by little leaf linden trees which form an intimate sitting area in the back yard without obstructing the view from the kitchen.
We incorporated the suspended ceiling over the island to make the space feel simultaneously spacious and intimate. We traded the traditional cabinetry for refined European style contemporary cabinets in two colors; glossy white and soft wedge brown for its unique mixture of chic yet natural. We used two colors of sustainable quartz countertops; earth brown in the perimeter and orange for the island to bring a feeling of cheerfulness. We selected comfortable yet elegant crescent stools. We added heated tile floors in a beautiful geometric design so our client would be comfortable enough to walk around barefoot.

THE MAKEOVER: The sunny easterly interior of the residence received a specialty seven-coat faux wall paint-out mixed with differing sheens to subtly reflect natural flooded sunlight. The kitchen was removed and replaced with Lilly white painted custom painted cabinetry with drawer & pot systems, ample pantry pullouts and a coffee/tea station. A very special waterjet cut partridge backsplash was selected for its uniqueness and ocean reflective colors. A Viking 7th gen column refrigerator and freezer (which also act as an air purifier) were used and a Thermador professional gas range & hood system were installed. A waterfall Cambria quartz countertop was installed for practical longevity along with new lighting and trims and an expansion of the passthrough viewing of the den media room. Trims and mouldings were refitted or replaced and the travertine floor repaired and polished. We kept the original wet bar design and refinished the cabinetry, added lighting and a unique coconut hull countertop.
CONTRACTOR's note: Not everyone looks for a deeper connection with their designer & contractor; but we feel genuine care comes from working to please our clients and friendships develop that last far beyond the work. - Matthew Winchenbach

Within walled boundaries, Woody Creek Garden embraces its high alpine environment through explorations of stone and water that serve as unifying elements of form in the design of the various outdoor spaces. Through striking and distinctively detailed stonework, water is portrayed in its various states and forms – atmospheric mist, single rivulets, cascades, and still pools. Two courtyards interlink the residence allowing each room to enjoy the visual landscape. In the entrance courtyard, the sound from a carved 24”x 24” cut-granite fountain reverberates throughout the walled space. Placed for gathering and quiet contemplation, a pin-wheel arrangement of sculptural, granite slabs provide a honed surface for sitting while providing year-round interest. Each stone was individually specified with intentionally spaced core fractures, utilizing the extraction method to serve as sculpted details. Large sandstone pavers, set in sand and cut in an irregular, but geometric fashion bring a sense of modernity to the space. Throughout the property, stone detailing seek to heighten one’s experience of the landscape and views. Upon the home’s entry, an 18” rectilinear cut in the freestanding stone wall frames a distant peak, creating a singular reference to the outside world in this encased space. Emerging from the center of an organically-shaped carved sandstone slab, water is carried along a narrow 2” runnel sandstone cap, disappearing into the framed horizon. This glimpse to the west is the only opening in the tightly enclosed courtyard. From its opposite aspect, the feature creates a welcoming gesture at the home’s front entrance. The slender rivulet of water trickles from the sandstone slab above onto a honed granite plane, set within a sandstone terrace In contrast, a second promontory courtyard commands a strong presence over its alpine setting, leaving the steeply sloping site undisturbed. A 12’x 40’ reflecting pool – a thin sheet of water over honed black granite – captures the form and silence of the everchanging natural environment on its taut surface. Along its edge, water flows over a ½” radius edge, disappearing into a recirculating slot. Commissioned by Italian artist Bruno Romeda, a bronze sculpture rests upon an elevated granite plinth. Along its western edge, designers crafted a two-tiered, infinity edge detail. In the first vertical drop, water flows between the pool and perimeter stone walls, landing onto an intermediate bench, while the second drop introduces a chamfered edge, allowing water to embrace the vertical relief without splashing. Sandstone terraces provide continuous access to the various landscape features of the garden. At the base of the battered perimeter walls, a sandstone path leads to a fire pit, encircled by lichen-covered boulders. Along the courtyard’s eastern perimeter, water appears to emerge from the hillside, fracturing and falling against the irregular vertical stone wall, melting in a curtain-like formation behind the spa. The colors, distinctive detailing and striking stonework were selected based on their appropriateness to the context. From above, a rectilinear pool lies behind the wall, silently mirroring the sky above and offering no ostensible connection to the structure or to its source.

A simple but elegant top treatment that softens a small powder room window is a Butterfly Balloon Shade Topper. The curves and tails give off an interesting character, which genuinely compliments the distinct geometric lines of the window trim. A small patterned damask greatly accents the powder room altogether.

A highly embellished custom coverlet can give off a luxurious feeling to your master bedroom. The coverlet’s ember line fabric was repeated from the swag & jabots, and the quilting genuinely highlights the pattern. The scalloped bottom emulates the curves of the headboard, while the tassel trim carries out the elegance. The shams and Euro-shams are a fine decorative touch. The two shams are repeated in the coverlet’s face fabric with tassel trim along edge, while the three Euro-shams are repeated in the jabots’ green tone on tone damask contrast lining. The front smaller Euro-sham contains a center button and tassel trim along edge repeated from the coverlet and shams, while the two larger Euro-shams are boxed, with key tassels and finished with four buttons on the face. All pieces together create an ornate and comfortable place to relax.

The Independence Pass Residence is sited at the edge of a nature preserve in Aspen, Colorado with views of an alpine meadow, forests of evergreen and aspen trees, the Roaring Fork River and the Rocky Mountains.
The owners requested something very different from large, ostentatious heavy-timber homes that appear throughout the Aspen slopes: a home that would reach out to nature, not to gird against it; one that would feel light and modern, yet not on display. Approached from the north, a driveway leads from the main road to a private parking court, sheltered from wind and weather. The house stretches between two existing hills on the
site; forming a threshold to the views of the meandering river and nature preserve beyond. The lower level is expressed as a series of stone-clad walls that extend the building into the landscape. The upper level is a sleek box with a metal roof that floats on slender columns.
Pre-weathered wood siding is used to clad the upper level of the buildings and will continue to weather to a silver grey. All exterior cladding materials are intended to weather naturally with little maintenance to a palette of soft grays. A wall of black-stained cedar boards marks the main entry and extends through the house into a double-height space with a floating stair. Cantilevered wood stair treads lead to the upper level and main living pavilion where full-height walls of glass reveal panoramic views of the nature preserve and New York peak. The living room, dining room and kitchen occupy the center of the linear floor plan, with a master bedroom suite to the west and a family room and outdoor courtyard to the east. A fireplace clad in Vals quartzite forms the western
edge of the living room with a large skylight above. A reading alcove with a bench of wood slats is lined with Douglas fir panels and stainless steel shelves for display of the owner’s photography collection. Sliding panels of glass open to an outdoor deck, further blurring the
boundary between interior and exterior. A second stair connecting all levels of the house is crafted of a one-inch thick steel plate that is both structure and guardrail, slicing through the vertical space. Ground level spaces
include three bedrooms with individual baths, a guest suite, mudroom and exercise room.

Arch windows ornamented in draperies with swag overlays are genuine eye-catching treatments. A stunning red fabric with gold damask pattern trimmed in gold bullion passementerie. Draperies puddling gracefully on the floor emanate classic elegance. Gold finished decorative drapery hardware features a fleur de lis crest which compliments the beautiful arch top window. Voile sheers soften the daylight and provide privacy in the evenings.

A unique shaped Dining room is fun to work with. To complement and maintain the beauty of this classic architecture, we installed custom white textured roller shades. We added a decorative black & white striped gimp to shades’ face, and decorative feather tassels as shade pulls. Both of these added passementerie features accentuate the architecture and the shades themselves, further harmonizing the entire dining space. The stunning custom area rug emulates the room’s shape, a dodecadon. The captivating swirl vine pattern is the ultimate aesthetic touch, in addition balances the room as whole. All of these fashionable attributes together emphasize the trace ceiling and this exclusive room’s genuine unique shape.

Corner windows can always be a challenge, still they create remarkably unique designs to a room. A traditional swag & jabot treatment’s smooth curves greatly compliments the windows' geometric lines. Light filtering cellular shades provide superior light control and privacy. A custom quilted coverlet dresses up a simple bed to become genuinely fashionable. A nice garnish to the bed is a simple gathered dust ruffle in a striped fabric, repeated on decorative bolster. The colorful striped fabric coordinates with the bold stylish floral fabric on the coverlet and the swag & jabots treatment for a colorful addition to the bedroom. An outline quilting on the coverlet authentically pronounces the floral pattern.

Together, this combination of bed coverings and window treatments create an astonishing Master Bedroom. The use of solid white textured full length draperies naturally frames the entire window. Using a decorative fluted pole and decorative finials genuinely correlate with the crown moulding. Beneath the draperies is a flat Roman valance in a botanical print fabric, further enhancing this window. As a final accent to this treatment, the decorative tabs with their contrast sleeves repeated from the flat Roman valance, bring a liveliness. The custom upholstered headboard coordinates with both window treatment and bed coverings, becomes and impressive accent to the bed altogether. With the use of a solid dot fabric, the duvet cover not only compliments the window treatment, also allowing it and the decorative pillows and shams to shine. Two sets of decorative shams harmonize the bed coverings with the window treatment. One sham set is repeated in the Roman valance fabric, finished with solid seafoam welt from second sham set. The second sham set is two-sided, one side repeated in duvet fabric, and opposite side in same type fabric as duvet but in seafoam, finished with welt in botanical print. Two yellow Euroshams brighten the space, and the plum sunburst pillow completes the area as whole.

This Tuscan-style home was designed to merge interiors and outdoors to be experienced as one. This 7000 sq. ft home is situated in the luxurious community of Santaluz, San Diego, surrounded by hundreds of acres of protected preserve.
The client's requirements were a challenge as they requested a serene but whimsical space within this modern Tuscan architecture style. Odoya’ Design translated this into the design concept by creating a playfully intimate contemporary villa in which luxury is achieved through simplicity with earthy tones and a sense of authentic organic warmth. Activating the whimsical and genuinely connecting to the client's soul, the art pieces selected are bold and bright evoking a captivating energy. Experiencing this home becomes an interplay between calm earthy tones and sparks of vibrant coral colors, as seen with the statement design objects and art.

An effortless approach to dressing up this simple staircase is the addition of a patterned woven stair runner. This stair runner genuinely enhances the staircase with the colors of black and gold, and hints of red, and the natural curvilinear pattern compliments and balances the design of the area. The ornamental floral pattern gives off elegance to this living room area. A sculptured patterned broadloom carpet brings in texture to this living room. This carpet’s lively curvilinear pattern assists in harmonizing the living room’s surrounding space.

Shaped cornices over pleated draperies create gorgeous window treatments to genuinely enhance this living room. A vibrant red floral patterned fabric on the cornice and draperies sets the stage for the rooms’ essential Tuscan colored theme. Using a contrast lip cord for the cornice’s bottom edge greatly accentuates their subtle curves, further complimenting the rooms’ crown moulding. The draperies bring in a soft touch completing the window treatments altogether. Coordinating with the cornices and draperies are decorative throw pillows in stripe and diamond fabrics, finished with the cornices’ contrast lip cord creating additional accents. In combination with the window treatments and throw pillows this entire sitting area creates a warm welcoming sensation.

This is a magnificent estate situated on almost four acres of land. It was built in late French Renaissance or Neoclassical style and designated a historical landmark.
The design for these gardens called for a genuine appreciation of the history of the house and an artistic vision: A blend of formal and informal elements was required in response to the classical elegance of the architecture and the scale of the surrounding natural landscape.
The brief for this project: Design and create beautiful spaces surrounding the house that would integrate seamlessly and appear as though they were always there. The gardens would be privately enjoyed, observed from all views from within the house and outside and provide an oasis. Our goal was to transform the gardens and forge a connection with the surrounding landscape and the architecture in a series of interlinked areas: Each area would have a unique character and purpose and present a selection of a large variety of plants that would weave through the gardens and create a wonderful show throughout the seasons.

An ideal enrichment for these French doors is the addition of top pleated faux silk draperies on a decorative traverse rod. Using a colorful embroidered faux silk fabric with a cream colored background keeps this kitchen’s breakfast area soft and bright. The red, green and gold embroidered flowers of the fabric add further cheerfulness to the area, and the gold gently coordinates with the wall color. A pair of solid green tassel tie backs bring out the details of the embroidered vines. Finishing off this pair of draperies is a beautiful walnut stained solid traverse rod with decorative finials, genuinely accentuating the French doors as a focal point. Altogether, this window treatment creates a stunning feature to the space.

These top pleated draperies are a classy & sophisticated ornamentation to this studio’s French doors with transom window. A solid gold puckered faux silk fabric’s texture places emphasis on the entire window altogether. The use of a contrast dark walnut wood pole with gold rings to coordinate with the furniture and dark wood floor harmonizes the area. Both the decorative finials and hold backs are repeated in the dark walnut with gold accents, as genuine accompaniments to this treatment. The final embellishment is the addition of the double tassel tie backs, which aids in providing more window view when desired. All of these features together create a grand window treatment.
