The addition of Upholstered Cornices with vertical striped fabric is an uncomplicated approach to introducing more color to this Family Room. We used straight upholstered cornices to genuinely showcase the colorful striped fabric. Below the cornices are custom pinch pleated sheers in Batiste fabrics to provide substantial sun protection, as well as privacy to the space. Further tying the room together, a custom area rug containing a subtle floral pattern naturally coordinates with the cornices’ striped fabric. Together, these features brighten the area creating a lovely warm inviting atmosphere.

When was the Last Time Someone Walked Into Your Home and Their Jaw Literally Dropped?
When was the last time someone walked into your home and their jaw literally dropped?
Picture this: Your guests arrive for dinner. They step into your foyer, and suddenly—silence. Wide eyes. A moment of pure disbelief. Then, inevitably, the question: “Is that really what I think it is?”
Welcome to the world of custom curved wooden slides, where Top Tread Stairways turns childhood dreams into sophisticated architectural statements.
The Secret is Out
For years, Clyde Martin and his team at Top Tread Stairways in Sierra Vista, Arizona, have been quietly building something extraordinary. While most stair companies focus on traditional projects, TopTread Stairways has been perfecting the art of custom hardwood slides—creating installations so remarkable that we joke about renaming the business “Chutes and Ladders.”
The truth? These aren’t just slides. They’re conversation pieces. Works of functional art. The kind of architectural element that sets your home apart from every other one on the planet.
And we build so many of them that we’ve shipped custom slides all over North America and beyond.
Four Ways to Make Your Home Unforgettable
Every slide project we undertake is unique, but they generally fall into four categories:
1. Curved Stair-Slide Combinations – The ultimate space-efficient solution, where stairs and slide spiral together in a stunning combination of form and function.
2. Curved Slides Separate from Stairways – For those who want the drama of a standalone curved slide that makes its own architectural statement.
3. Straight Stair-Slide Combinations – Perfect for modern, linear spaces where clean lines meet playful innovation.
4. Straight Slides Separate from Stairways – Sometimes simplicity creates the most powerful impact.
But here’s where it gets interesting: Some slides feature flat seat areas with vertical sides. Others embrace a barrel shape for enhanced comfort. We’ve built slides wide enough for several people to descend shoulder-to-shoulder, laughing all the way down. And we’ve crafted intimate slides designed for solo adventures, regardless of age or size.
Our clients? They absolutely love them.
Stories That Will Make You Rethink What’s Possible
Take the 11,000-square-foot home in Beverly Hills, overlooking the famous Sunset Strip. In one child’s bedroom, we installed a 12-foot curved slide crafted from white oak. Understated location, extraordinary feature.
Or consider the 35-foot-high round tower room in an 8,500-square-foot custom home bordering the Sacramento River in Northern California. This project has become our most famous installation—a stunning 33-foot curved stair-slide combination built entirely from solid black walnut, featuring 445 layers of cross-laminated hardwood and a spiral newel post that took eight months to construct in our shop.
The homeowners had searched for eight years to find someone “crazy enough” to build their dream. When we completed it, one of Clyde’s trusted business partners—someone who’d seen him tackle countless unique projects—admitted he thought Clyde had lost his mind taking this one on. He genuinely didn’t believe we could pull it off.
We did. And the homeowners? Still thrilled years later.
Where Imagination Meets Reality
But these slides aren’t just for private estates. We’ve installed a 24-foot hickory slide in an elementary school library just east of Dallas, where kids absolutely love it. And here’s something that will make you smile: We built the longest wood slide ever for a children’s hospital in Springfield, Illinois.
Have you ever heard a child beg to go to the doctor?
We’re pretty sure it happens in Springfield. That walnut slide stretches 45 feet long and 3 feet wide—spacious enough for three children to sit side-by-side or for an adult and child to slide together comfortably. We built it in one piece, filling an entire semi-trailer for transport. It lives in the hospital lobby, and no appointment is needed to experience it yourself.
In Raleigh, North Carolina, we installed a 36-foot white oak slide in a custom home. The client loved it so much they ordered a second one—literally 15 minutes after we finished the installation. When Clyde returned to the office, there was already a check in the mailbox for slide number two. This 14,000-square-foot home now features 72 linear feet of curved white oak slide: one connecting the second floor to the main level, another linking the main floor to the finished basement.
What a ride, indeed.
Then there’s the curved stair-slide combination in Visalia, California—32 feet of knotty alder complemented by a hanging netted loft and climbing wall. Creative? Absolutely. Fun? Beyond measure.
The People Behind the Dreams
What inspires us most isn’t the technical challenge of building these slides—though engineering a 33-foot curved slide from 445 layers of cross-laminated hardwood certainly keeps us engaged. It’s working with clients who refuse to think inside the box.
These are creative individuals willing to explore ideas that set their homes and businesses apart. They dream of installations that make people stop and stare. They understand that architecture can—and should—inspire joy.
Listening to them describe their visions, explaining their dreams of a slide design unlike anything else on earth? That’s a privilege. And bringing those dreams to life? That’s what we live for.
My team and I have as much fun designing and building these slides as our clients have riding them. We’d love nothing better than to hear from you!

What Sets Top Tread Stairways Apart
Since 2006, Clyde Martin has built Top Tread Stairways on a simple premise: there’s a better way to build stairs. With roots in eastern Pennsylvania and years of experience installing hundreds of pre-built stairways, Clyde brought that expertise west and founded a company dedicated to exceptional craftsmanship.
We stock thousands of stair parts in more than ten wood species—hickory, jatoba, maple, cherry, mahogany, alder, red oak, white oak, poplar, Douglas fir, and walnut. Quality levels are high. Lead times are short. We understand the urgency of your project schedule and deliver accordingly.
But here’s what really matters: When it comes to custom wooden slides, Top Tread Stairways is one of—if not the—premier builders of indoor wooden slides in the United States. This isn’t a side project for us. It’s a specialty we’ve refined through years of experience, countless installations, and an unwavering commitment to turning impossible dreams into breathtaking reality.
Your Home, Reimagined
Whether you’re envisioning a straight wooden stand-alone slide for your office or a jaw-dropping curved wooden slide/stairway combination that will become your home’s signature feature, we’d love to hear from you.
We’re not here to build ordinary. We’re here to build extraordinary.

Dining area, kitchen and foyer seen from the Great Room.
One of the drivers in generating the floor plan was a set of seeming contradictory goals.
In watching the scouting tape of the family, I was very aware that this was a family who genuinely enjoyed being with each other. One of my goals therefore was to create a central communal space that the family could share.
I wanted to keep this space at an intimate scale but was over-ruled by the show staff due to 'camera angles'. In our computer generated image of this space, color was used to create a datum line that was closer to the floor and which would serve to bring down the visual scale of the room.
In the scouting tape the family members spoke of "Living on top of each other", "not having privacy" and "not being able to get away". Each of the bedrooms were place in their own 'pavilion' creating a sense of thier own place. But to maintain the sense of the strong family connection, each of the bedrooms connected through alcoves directly into the communal areas of the house.
Another oddity of houses built for TV is the sheer amount of lighting fixtures which are installed. Again the studio takes over when it comes to lighting. I had hoped that I could convince the show to reduce the number of fixtures, divide the lights into multiple circuits and put them all on dimmers. I am not sure where the dimmer/multi-circuit recommendation ended up, but the number of light fixtures did not get reduced.

Large picture windows are a lovely feature to let lots of sunlight into your home, and custom shaped cornices are a genuine becoming element for them. Accompanied by draperies and a sheer vertical wrap this cornice becomes a focal point of this magnificent window treatment. The cornice’s bottom edge is a subtle wave pattern following suit of the sofas’ top edge, further accentuating itself to the room. Using an embroidered faux silk fabric containing a soft blue background, both the cornice and draperies naturally enhance this window. The sheer vertical wrap beneath the cornice and draperies provides the living room with ample light control and privacy. As a finishing touch to correlate with this window treatment, we added throw pillows repeated in the embroidered faux silk fabric to the two sofas. Altogether, this positively harmonizes the room.

Dressing up beds is a smooth and effortless approach to enhance ones bedroom. This unquilted bedspreads fabric carries a subtle print containing gentle colors of teal and light green, repeated on the shaped valance. Using a solid fabric, the custom upholstered headboard brings out a strong burst of the teal, and compliments many of the room’s surroundings with its soft curved shape. An ideal accessory to this bed is the two knife edge throw pillows with a large welt, corresponding with the headboard’s rolled edge. The pillows’ fabric is a tone on tone geometric pattern, a genuine accent to this bedroom.

These two adjoining girls' rooms — a show-stopping nursery and a dreamy toddler bedroom — are among the most enchanting children's spaces imaginable. Each room has its own distinct personality while sharing a thread of botanical wonder, soft femininity, and elevated design that refuses to talk down to its young inhabitants. These are spaces designed not just for children, but with genuine artistry — rooms that will inspire wonder for years to come.
The Nursery
Step into this nursery and feel immediately transported into a secret garden at dusk. The design decision that sets the entire room apart is breathtakingly bold: a large-scale dark floral wallpaper — blooming with oversized peonies, roses, and wildflowers in dusty pink, peach, sage, and cream against a deep slate blue ground — wraps every wall from chair rail to ceiling, creating an immersive, almost painterly environment that feels simultaneously dramatic and deeply soft.
The ceiling is painted a warm, powdery pink that picks up the blush tones within the wallpaper perfectly — a "fifth wall" design moment that makes the room feel like a complete, considered installation rather than a decorated room. The transition from wallpapered walls to pink ceiling at the crown molding line is seamless and intentional, wrapping the baby in a floral garden overhead and all around.
Anchoring the room with genuine design authority is a spectacular gold and crystal chandelier — its circular brass frame hung with vertical crystal rods that catch and scatter light like a garden in rain — elevating the nursery from charming to genuinely luxurious. Beneath it, a natural oak arched spindle crib sits against the wallpapered feature wall, its warm honey wood grain providing organic contrast to the moody floral backdrop. Pink velvet pillows and a soft crib mobile of plush clouds and moons complete the crib vignette with gentle whimsy.
A boucle glider chair and matching stacked ottoman in cream provide the nursing corner, paired with a small brass side table for midnight essentials. A soft blush pink area rug anchors the seating area and echoes the ceiling color. Linen drapery panels in soft ivory frame the windows without competing with the wallpaper, their pinch-pleat heading adding a refined tailoring detail.
The Toddler Bedroom
The connecting bedroom takes the botanical theme in a softer, sunnier direction — all blush pink walls (matching ceiling and walls in the same warm rose tone for a cocooning effect), botanical print drapery in cream with red and green wildflowers, and brass curtain hardware that ties to the nursery's gold palette. A gold spindle crib — the metallic version of the nursery's wooden one — grounds the room with warmth, while a sage green upholstered glider provides a reading corner. A white dresser with brass hardware doubles as a changing table, topped with art prints and a Matisse-inspired framed poster in a gold frame that adds a touch of grown-up gallery sensibility.
Floating acrylic shelves hold a curated collection of board books at child-height — a detail that communicates that this room was designed for a child who will love and use it, not just admire it. A whimsical wicker llama toy basket, an indoor olive tree, and a fluffy white boucle child's armchair complete a room that balances magic with livability.

Custom top pleated draperies are a simple and beautiful touch to this master bedroom. Multi-colored striped linen blend fabric creates an informal and comfy atmosphere. The metal drapery rods are a genuine accent considering many surroundings are wood furnishings. A subtle neutral Roman shade naturally coordinates with the wall color, as well as softening the windows with ample privacy and sun protection. The side chair and ottoman are reupholstered in a soft blue chenille fabric, correlating with the drapery fabric. A soft blue throw pillow is repeated from the upholstery fabric, while a kidney pillow is repeated in the drapery fabric, using the soft blue chenille fabric as welt. These are great accompaniments to the area. The window treatments and reupholstered chair together give off a comfortable feeling.

A “one of a kind” custom shaped cornice and its accompanying drapery panels authentically enhances this dining room’s windows. Giving off a contemporary flare, this combination of three separate fabrics genuinely harmonizes the space. The draperies and the circle component of the cornices’ fabric is a textured gold corresponding with the cornices’ main fabric, a textured gold diagonal weave. Accenting the cornice’s bottom edge and circle is a solid black fabric, distinctly accentuating its unique configuration. Altogether this window treatment creates a warm atmosphere.

THE MAKEOVER: The sunny easterly interior of the residence received a specialty seven-coat faux wall paint-out mixed with differing sheens to subtly reflect natural flooded sunlight. The kitchen was removed and replaced with Lilly white painted custom painted cabinetry with drawer & pot systems, ample pantry pullouts and a coffee/tea station. A very special waterjet cut partridge backsplash was selected for its uniqueness and ocean reflective colors. A Viking 7th gen column refrigerator and freezer (which also act as an air purifier) were used and a Thermador professional gas range & hood system were installed. A waterfall Cambria quartz countertop was installed for practical longevity along with new lighting and trims and an expansion of the passthrough viewing of the den media room. Trims and mouldings were refitted or replaced and the travertine floor repaired and polished. We kept the original wet bar design and refinished the cabinetry, added lighting and a unique coconut hull countertop.

The living room at Perry Street is the heart of the home and it earns that title. A gas fireplace with a tile surround and a warm wood mantle anchors the space, flanked by black-framed windows that pull in natural light from two sides. An exposed wood ceiling beam runs overhead, adding rustic warmth to an otherwise clean and airy room. Leather armchairs, a natural wood coffee table, and layered rugs create an atmosphere that is relaxed and inviting without trying too hard. Sliding glass doors open directly onto the covered patio, making indoor and outdoor living feel genuinely connected. A staircase with black metal railing frames the left edge of the room, adding architectural interest from every angle.

Some basements are finished. Others are designed to be the most remarkable room in the house.
This full lower-level transformation in the Denver Metro area reimagines what a basement can be — combining a cinematic media lounge, a custom entertainer's wet bar, and a spa-caliber bathroom into one cohesive, intentionally designed living environment. From the moment you descend the stairs, it is immediately clear this space was built to a completely different standard.
The Media Lounge
The entertainment space anchors the lower level with a presence most rooms above grade never achieve. A custom built-in media wall in deep teal is flanked by rich walnut millwork with integrated LED-backlit shelving, creating warmth and sophistication that draws you in immediately. Cognac leather recliners, plush area rugs, and precision-placed recessed lighting complete a space designed equally for intimate evenings and effortless hosting. The cohesive material palette — walnut, teal, warm brass, and deep charcoal — runs seamlessly throughout, connecting every element of the lower level without a single detail left to chance.
The Custom Wet Bar
Adjacent to the media lounge, the custom wet bar delivers everything a serious host needs — and nothing they don't. Walnut cabinetry with matte black hardware, floating shelves illuminated by warm under-shelf LED lighting, a marble-look quartz backsplash, an integrated bar sink, and a full beverage fridge create a bar experience that elevates a casual evening without effort. This is the kind of craftsmanship that transforms a finished basement into a genuine extension of how a family actually lives and entertains.
The Spa Bathroom
Rarely does a lower-level bathroom command this level of attention. A floating concrete-look vanity with wall-mount matte black fixtures, a backlit LED mirror casting warm ambient light across the space, a walnut floating bench, frameless glass walk-in shower with a rain head, penny tile shower floor, and large-format dark tile throughout — every element selected with the same care and intention as a primary suite. The result is a bathroom that earns its place in any conversation about the home's finest spaces.

CONTRACTOR's note: Not everyone looks for a deeper connection with their designer & contractor; but we feel genuine care comes from working to please our clients and friendships develop that last far beyond the work. - Matthew Winchenbach

Example of a mid-sized trendy dark wood floor and brown floor dining room design in Houston with beige walls

This commercial interior design project in [CITY] by Lavish reimagines the shared amenity spaces of Capitol Lofts, a historic downtown loft community, as warm, design-forward gathering places for residents.
Our client wanted the building's common areas to feel like an extension of home — polished, comfortable, and genuinely usable day to day. Lavish designed a series of connected spaces that give residents room to play, work, unwind, and stay active, all tied together by a confident transitional palette of deep charcoal, warm wood, and brushed brass.
Highlights include a billiards and game lounge with a sculptural chandelier and framed vintage patent art, a resident café and coffee bar with banquette seating, a paneled media lounge for movie nights, and a bright fitness studio. Layered lighting, rich millwork, and mixed textures elevate each room while keeping the spaces inviting and low-maintenance for shared use.
Lavish provides full-service residential and commercial interior design, bringing thoughtful, livable design to communities like Capitol Lofts.
