This modern passive solar residence sits on five acres of steep mountain land with great views looking down the Beaverdam Valley in Asheville, North Carolina. The house is on a south-facing slope that allowed the owners to build the energy efficient, passive solar house they had been dreaming of. Our clients were looking for decidedly modern architecture with a low maintenance exterior and a clean-lined and comfortable interior. We developed a light and neutral interior palette that provides a simple backdrop to highlight an extensive family art collection and eclectic mix of antique and modern furniture. In the kitchen, we used Poggenpohl cabinetry in both a shimmering blue color, and a dark wenge wood finish for contrast. The backsplash over the sink is Ann Sacks penny round tiles, and the bar front is Ann Sacks rectangular ceramic tiles

Inspiration for a craftsman landscaping in Los Angeles.

The main floor wine bar sits at the base of the stairs. A pop of green ties it to the second floor color and to the cool tones used in the dining area. By clearing all but a handful of items, we allowed the remaining items to get the attention they deserve. DaubmanPhotography@Cox.net

This Houston home's kitchen is second to none with the large space for cooking, wooden cabinetry from Wood-Mode and abundant storage space for food and dishes. Cooking a Thanksgiving feast for both sides of the family would be a breeze in this kitchen! Now disregarding the fantastic storage that it provides, it also has wonderful design! The blue backsplash is a perfect contrast to the rustic cabinets, and let's not forget about the island with it's blue wood-work! This room was designed by Cabinets and Designs with cabinetry from Wood-Mode.

A Truth Window — a small door that reveals the elements behind the plaster — is a tradition in straw bale houses and serves a source of surprise and delight as guests get to see what the walls are made of. This Truth Window is made from an antique cabinet topped with a unique piece of weathered wood found on site. The knothole functions as a secondary Truth Window, showing the color of the structural plasters hidden behind the finish coat.

Wanting to get as close to net- zero as possible, our clients came to us with a desire to create a home that would accommodate their growing family while walking lighter on the earth and living in a healthier home. A collaborative process with the clients, architect and Meadowlark resulted in a stunning energy-efficient home that seamlessly melds with the aesthetic of the classic Ann Arbor neighborhood where it’s situated.
