This property was in an estate. The previous owner had a dog fence in the front and had planted shrubs which gradually obscured almost the entire property. We removed most of the large shrubs along the curb. Because of the dense shade there was no lawn and the slope in the front of the house was bare. We created a bed on the slope and planted sarcococca which will gradually become a solid carpet of green with fragrant white flowers in the spring. We added more ferns under the large platanus and moved hosta and day lilies from elsewhere on the property. We created a bed running from the large oakleaf hydrangea on the edge of the slope and curving against the side fence (not visible) around to the platanus and continuing along the front close to the curb. We also created a bed under the living room windows and installed fothergilla and green tower boxwood for a combination of year round color and early spring flowers and bright fall foliage.

You can — and should — plump up your darlings to survive winter hibernation, by gradually increasing how much you feed them as temperatures start to drop. When pond water gets below 59 degrees, use fish food made for cold water. As the temperature continues to drop, gradually reduce the amount you feed them.
Once temperatures go below 55 degrees, says Dave Kelly, the metabolisms of pond fish slow way down. And when pond water gets down to 50 degrees, do not feed the fish any more. Their systems shut down in the colder water, and food sits inside them and rots. They get very sick and diseased from this. www.deckandpatio.com
