Our homeowners wanted a garden with a natural feel. We added concrete steppers with dymondia groundcover for a new pathway to the backyard. Low water plantings with a natural feel bring hummingbirds. Drip irrigation and permeable paving. The nasturtiums are from seeds planted by the owner, the leaves are edible. Vegetable beds and fruit trees in the backyard provide a bountiful harvest.

Kurapia (Lippia nodiflora L. 'Kurapia') is a perennial, non-invasive groundcover that uses less water than cool-season fescue. It grows 1" high and each plant can spread up to 6' (yes, 6 feet). It will tolerate light foot traffic. Low maintenance, it will tolerate full sun or light shade.

In this project the home owner was a furniture importer, so she had an amazing array of decorative elements to add to the design. After spending years traveling through Indonesia and India on buying trips, she wanted a taste of the tropics in her own back yard. We worked together to incorporate her beautiful objects into an undeniably tropical-feeling space. By carefully selecting plants and their placement, we were able to achieve the lush green feel of Bali or Hawaii in the Southern California climate without using a lot of water. After installation, this oasis is alive with birds and dragonflies. Lush green plantings create microclimates around the house that help cool the property on hot days. Integrating edible trees provides the homeowner with pomegranates, several types of guavas, lemons, limes, and bananas. Today, the homeowner rents out her home and garden for photo shoots and weddings.

A curving path is lined with spring-blooming black-eyed susans and other native plants; on the right, seedling wildflowers will be ready to bloom in the fall. Using a variety of native plants can ensure colorful flowers (and nectar for bees and butterflies) throughout the growing season.

Can you hear the birds and the rustling leaves? We love technology but wish that instead of viewing these photos, it would be neat to teleport you there. A landscape is not just about what you want, it's about the an experience of all the senses. Just don't taste the bricks-trust us.

The goal of this landscape renovation was easy outdoor entertaining with a variety of programmatic elements gracefully arranged in a small space. Our design crafted spaces for a lap pool, fireside lounge, kitchen and bar, heated cabana for dining, children’s play space, and an extensive rose garden.
