The Pumpkin Ridge Passive House is no more expensive to own on a monthly basis than a conventional custom home, when monthly energy costs are considered alongside mortgage, taxes and insurance. Yet the high performance green building will consume 90% less heating energy and offer exceptional comfort and indoor air quality. The project, designed by Scott Edwards Architecture and built by Hammer & Hand, is one of six homes in the Pacific Northwest to be featured by Northwest ENERGY STAR® as a demonstration super-efficient home. Conceptually, the project becomes a highly choreographed knot at the center of these routes, drawing strands in, engaging them with others, and propelling them back out again. The project’s intent is to capture and harness the physical and ephemeral sense of these latent natural movements as a way to promote in the architecture the wanderlust the surrounding landscape inspires. Our clients were living with outdated, dark bathrooms in their newly purchased Falling Star home. The dull palette of warm neutrals did not reflect the couple’s East Coast traditional style. They noticed several renovation projects by JRP in the neighborhood. The professionalism and the process impressed them. After receiving a Pardon Our Dust courtesy letter from JRP, the couple decided to call for a consultation. Their wish list was clear. They wanted the Falling Star design to be light, airy, and white. It had to reflect their East Coast roots. Working with the original footprint, JRP completely transformed the space, creating a tranquil primary suite rich with traditional detail. The result is an effusive celebration of classic style. Now, the radiant rooms glow. To enlarge the primary closet, the JRP team removed a cluttered storage area. Inside, a separate dressing space is finished with upgraded storage and refined built-in cabinetry with recessed panels. Pops of glam such as Robert Abbey glass chandeliers and brilliant bits of chrome are moored by traditional elements like crown molding, porcelain tiles, and a quartz-clad drop-in soaking tub. Large windows in the primary bath and funnel skylights in the closet harness the natural light to stunning effect, sweeping the rooms with the cool feeling of fresh air. The “Sail Cloth” white paint adds soft depth to the uncomplicated elegance of both rooms. Very Quick Staging. Swap cabinet doors, put on new brushed chrome handles. Replace main counter with laminate. Purchased a used piece of carrara marble (formally a dining table) and used it for a large island top with overhang to accommodate stools for breakfast island. Match backsplash with carrara marble subway tiles. Used antique bull harness pieces @10.00 each and rusted chains to make pot rack in bay window. Composition was completed with old wooden crate used as wine rack and scale for fruit basket. Mid-century wallpapper brightened the room and complements a collection of 1950's canisters and glassware. The total look was pulled together for approximately $1000.00
