This is a great house. Perched high on a private, heavily wooded site, it has a rustic contemporary aesthetic. Vaulted ceilings, sky lights, large windows and natural materials punctuate the main spaces. The existing large format mosaic slate floor grabs your attention upon entering the home extending throughout the foyer, kitchen, and family room. Specific requirements included a larger island with workspace for each of the homeowners featuring a homemade pasta station which requires small appliances on lift-up mechanisms as well as a custom-designed pasta drying rack. Both chefs wanted their own prep sink on the island complete with a garbage “shoot” which we concealed below sliding cutting boards. A second and overwhelming requirement was storage for a large collection of dishes, serving platters, specialty utensils, cooking equipment and such. To meet those needs we took the opportunity to get creative with storage: sliding doors were designed for a coffee station adjacent to the main sink; hid the steam oven, microwave and toaster oven within a stainless steel niche hidden behind pantry doors; added a narrow base cabinet adjacent to the range for their large spice collection; concealed a small broom closet behind the refrigerator; and filled the only available wall with full-height storage complete with a small niche for charging phones and organizing mail. We added 48” high base cabinets behind the main sink to function as a bar/buffet counter as well as overflow for kitchen items. The client’s existing vintage commercial grade Wolf stove and hood commands attention with a tall backdrop of exposed brick from the fireplace in the adjacent living room. We loved the rustic appeal of the brick along with the existing wood beams, and complimented those elements with wired brushed white oak cabinets. The grayish stain ties in the floor color while the slab door style brings a modern element to the space. We lightened the color scheme with a mix of white marble and quartz countertops. The waterfall countertop adjacent to the dining table shows off the amazing veining of the marble while adding contrast to the floor. Special materials are used throughout, featured on the textured leather-wrapped pantry doors, patina zinc bar countertop, and hand-stitched leather cabinet hardware. We took advantage of the tall ceilings by adding two walnut linear pendants over the island that create a sculptural effect and coordinated them with the new dining pendant and three wall sconces on the beam over the main sink.

With a tabletop made of high-grade mineral composition concrete and a base of solid wrought iron, Marcella is ideal for al fresco dining. Poured and set concrete is carefully cut by skilled artisans then hand-finished and hand-polished to create a glass-like smooth surface. The table’s base is made of wrought iron—our artisans give it some subtle curves and distressing. Year after year, the finish on both pieces will develop and only get more beautiful.

Our San Francisco studio designed this beautiful four-story home for a young newlywed couple to create a warm, welcoming haven for entertaining family and friends. In the living spaces, we chose a beautiful neutral palette with light beige and added comfortable furnishings in soft materials. The kitchen is designed to look elegant and functional, and the breakfast nook with beautiful rust-toned chairs adds a pop of fun, breaking the neutrality of the space. In the game room, we added a gorgeous fireplace which creates a stunning focal point, and the elegant furniture provides a classy appeal. On the second floor, we went with elegant, sophisticated decor for the couple's bedroom and a charming, playful vibe in the baby's room. Atherton has many large substantial homes - our clients purchased an existing home on a one acre flag-shaped lot and asked us to design a new dream home for them. The result is a new 7,000 square foot four-building complex consisting of the main house, six-car garage with two car lifts, pool house with a full one bedroom residence inside, and a separate home office /work out gym studio building. A fifty-foot swimming pool was also created with fully landscaped yards. Given the rectangular shape of the lot, it was decided to angle the house to incoming visitors slightly so as to more dramatically present itself. The house became a classic u-shaped home but Feng Shui design principals were employed directing the placement of the pool house to better contain the energy flow on the site. The main house entry door is then aligned with a special Japanese red maple at the end of a long visual axis at the rear of the site. These angles and alignments set up everything else about the house design and layout, and views from various rooms allow you to see into virtually every space tracking movements of others in the home. The residence is simply divided into two wings of public use, kitchen and family room, and the other wing of bedrooms, connected by the living and dining great room. Function drove the exterior form of windows and solid walls with a line of clerestory windows which bring light into the middle of the large home. Extensive sun shadow studies with 3D tree modeling led to the unorthodox placement of the pool to the north of the home, but tree shadow tracking showed this to be the sunniest area during the entire year. Sustainable measures included a full 7.1kW solar photovoltaic array technically making the house off the grid, and arranged so that no panels are visible from the property. A large 16,000 gallon rainwater catchment system consisting of tanks buried below grade was installed. The home is California GreenPoint rated and also features sealed roof soffits and a sealed crawlspace without the usual venting. A whole house computer automation system with server room was installed as well. Heating and cooling utilize hot water radiant heated concrete and wood floors supplemented by heat pump generated heating and cooling. George Sexton Associates provided lighting design and focusing services to the interior spaces and roof terrace of this NYC residence. A recessed slot with tracks provided a flexible lighting solution for showcasing the owner’s vast art collection. GSA collaborated with Glasbau Hahn to design and coordinate four museum grade vitrines. Wallgrazing luminaires where strategically located and integrated into the architecture to provide lighting for a series of detailed reliefs. Millwork was fitted with integrated lighting that is activated with door movement. Integrated lighting was also used under shelves and in closets.

A bright dining room with lots of natural light in a mountain modern house in Asheville. The room has high windows with great panoramic views.The owners are geologists and have an extensive mineral collection. Creating display cabinets that are integrated into the rooms and highlight the beauty of the minerals was a priority. These minerals and their cabinetry became a driving factor in our design and decision making process and in many cases were a focal point of the architecture and interior design.

2013 NARI CAPITAL COTY, MERIT AWARD WINNER, GREEN REMODELING INTERIOR This couple wanted to update their kitchen and first floor, using environmentally-friendly products in the process. Making it green, safe and contemporary were the goals of this renovation. The new kitchen layout with the center island has made getting around this central kitchen more possible. Taller, custom cabinetry has improved the overall storage and accessibility. The open concept design makes the space the hub of the home. Green, safe and contemporary features make this project the jewel of the neighborhood. These features include: • Use of custom-made Douglas Fir slab cabinetry (engineered wood veneer from younger growth trees) with low shin finish (low VOC water based finish) and kilned dried select hardwood frames construction without use of any formaldehyde glues. • Use of no VOC paint on entire interior and exterior. • Manufacturing and installing 12” x 12 ft x ¾” solid birch hardwood floor for entire first floor. This was finished with Low-VOC water based finish. • Reuse of some of the existing lumber and plywood in the same project was essential. • Installing LED recess lighting and task lighting with Lurton Home system lighting management and controllable low voltage dimmers. • Installing high efficiency with the highest rating of Energy Star appliances. • Installing high grade closed cell insulation in walls and open space, caulking and sealing all open gaps. • Install large double pane-low E, argon filled gas windows. • Use of air tight insulated duct chases on all new ducts. The homeowners, who are active members of wildlife preservations, are pleased with green and environmentally safe kitchen and entire first floor project.

For this couple, planning to move back to their rambler home in Arlington after living overseas for few years, they were ready to get rid of clutter, clean up their grown-up kids’ boxes, and transform their home into their dream home for their golden years. The old home included a box-like 8 feet x 10 feet kitchen, no family room, three small bedrooms and two back to back small bathrooms. The laundry room was located in a small dark space of the unfinished basement. This home is located in a cul-de-sac, on an uphill lot, of a very secluded neighborhood with lots of new homes just being built around them. The couple consulted an architectural firm in past but never were satisfied with the final plans. They approached Michael Nash Custom Kitchens hoping for fresh ideas. The backyard and side yard are wooded and the existing structure was too close to building restriction lines. We developed design plans and applied for special permits to achieve our client’s goals. The remodel includes a family room, sunroom, breakfast area, home office, large master bedroom suite, large walk-in closet, main level laundry room, lots of windows, front porch, back deck, and most important than all an elevator from lower to upper level given them and their close relative a necessary easier access. The new plan added extra dimensions to this rambler on all four sides. Starting from the front, we excavated to allow a first level entrance, storage, and elevator room. Building just above it, is a 12 feet x 30 feet covered porch with a leading brick staircase. A contemporary cedar rail with horizontal stainless steel cable rail system on both the front porch and the back deck sets off this project from any others in area. A new foyer with double frosted stainless-steel door was added which contains the elevator. The garage door was widened and a solid cedar door was installed to compliment the cedar siding. The left side of this rambler was excavated to allow a storage off the garage and extension of one of the old bedrooms to be converted to a large master bedroom suite, master bathroom suite and walk-in closet. We installed matching brick for a seam-less exterior look. The entire house was furnished with new Italian imported highly custom stainless-steel windows and doors. We removed several brick and block structure walls to put doors and floor to ceiling windows. A full walk in shower with barn style frameless glass doors, double vanities covered with selective stone, floor to ceiling porcelain tile make the master bathroom highly accessible. The other two bedrooms were reconfigured with new closets, wider doorways, new wood floors and wider windows. Just outside of the bedroom, a new laundry room closet was a major upgrade. A second HVAC system was added in the attic for all new areas. The back side of the master bedroom was covered with floor to ceiling windows and a door to step into a new deck covered in trex and cable railing. This addition provides a view to wooded area of the home. By excavating and leveling the backyard, we constructed a two story 15’x 40’ addition that provided the tall ceiling for the family room just adjacent to new deck, a breakfast area a few steps away from the remodeled kitchen. Upscale stainless-steel appliances, floor to ceiling white custom cabinetry and quartz counter top, and fun lighting improved this back section of the house with its increased lighting and available work space. Just below this addition, there is extra space for exercise and storage room. This room has a pair of sliding doors allowing more light inside. The right elevation has a trapezoid shape addition with floor to ceiling windows and space used as a sunroom/in-home office. Wide plank wood floors were installed throughout the main level for continuity. The hall bathroom was gutted and expanded to allow a new soaking tub and large vanity. The basement half bathroom was converted to a full bathroom, new flooring and lighting in the entire basement changed the purpose of the basement for entertainment and spending time with grandkids. Off white and soft tone were used inside and out as the color schemes to make this rambler spacious and illuminated. Final grade and landscaping, by adding a few trees, trimming the old cherry and walnut trees in backyard, saddling the yard, and a new concrete driveway and walkway made this home a unique and charming gem in the neighborhood.

Made of high-grade matte metal with an integrated handgrip and embedded lighting strip, this branded hardware accessory upgrades the utilization rate and use experience of top cabinet storage space, a premium practical fitting for modern customized cabinets.

Whole wall high-end wine collection display cabinet for formal lounge area. Multi-grid framed glass door cabinets are installed with internal warm LED backlight, each lattice is reasonably divided to place red wine bottles, decorative certificates and art ornaments, with anti-dust glass protection. A long marble counter TV cabinet is set on the right side to place television and audio equipment, matching the light fabric curved sofa to form a high-grade reception leisure space. The cabinet body uses anti-UV coating to prevent wine labels from fading under strong Australian sunlight irradiation.
