Modern and minimalistic!
Various tones of grey blends into the marble style large kitchen island with similar tones returning into the backsplash. Stainless steel exhaust and handles compliments the colors further.
Double sink in the island and an extra sink in the background for this large kitchen. A wine cooler for the enthusiasts and spotlights to ensure even lighting all around. Lots of drawer space for everything to ensure the minimal style can be maintained.
A dash of color with the olive green high chairs (the green viewed from the window repeats inside) for casual dining or socializing while dinner is made.

Our clients were looking to make this home their forever home and to create a warm and welcoming space that the whole family would enjoy returning to every day. One of our primary goals in this project was to change how our clients moved through their home. We tossed aside the existing walls that blocked off the kitchen and introduced a butler’s pantry to connect the kitchen directly to the dining room. Contrast is king in this home, and we utilized a variety of light and dark finishes to create distinctive layers and lean into opportunities for accents. To tie the space in this home together, we introduced warm hardwood flooring throughout the main level and selected a soft grey paint as our primary wall color.
Kitchen- The heart of this home is most definitely the kitchen! We erased every trace of the original builder kitchen and created a space that welcomes one and all. The glorious island, with its light cabinetry and dramatic quartz countertop, provides the perfect gathering place for morning coffee and baking sessions. At the perimeter of the kitchen, we selected a handsome grey finish with a brushed linen effect for an extra touch of texture that ties in with the high variation backsplash tile giving us a softened handmade feel. Black metal accents from the hardware to the light fixtures unite the kitchen with the rest of the home.
Butler’s Pantry- The Butler’s Pantry quickly became one of our favorite spaces in this home! We had fun with the backsplash tile patten (utilizing the same tile we highlighted in the kitchen but installed in a herringbone pattern). Continuing the warm tones through this space with the butcher block counter and open shelving, it works to unite the front and back of the house. Plus, this space is home to the kegerator with custom family tap handles!
Mud Room- We wanted to make sure we gave this busy family a landing place for all their belongings. With plenty of cabinetry storage, a sweet built-in bench, and hooks galore there’s no more jockeying to find a home for coats.
Fireplace- A double-sided fireplace means double the opportunity for a dramatic focal point! On the living room side (the tv-free grown-up zone) we utilized reclaimed wooden planks to add layers of texture and bring in more cozy warm vibes. On the family room side (aka the tv room) we mixed it up with a travertine ledger stone that ties in with the warm tones of the kitchen island.
Staircase- The standard builder handrail was just not going to do it anymore! So, we leveled up designed a custom steel & wood railing for this home with a dark finish that allows it to contrast beautifully against the walls and tie in with the dark accent finishes throughout the home.

Before we redesigned the basement of this charming but compact 1950's North Vancouver home, this space was an unfinished utility room that housed nothing more than an outdated furnace and hot water tank. Since space was at a premium we recommended replacing the furnace with a high efficiency model and converting the hot water tank to an on-demand system, both of which could be housed in the adjacent crawl space. That left room for a generous laundry room conveniently located at the back entrance of the house where family members returning from a mountain bike ride can undress, drop muddy clothes into the washing machine and proceed to shower in the bathroom just across the hall. Every home is filled with meaning, but this one is especially significant to its owners. The clients were high school sweethearts and were returning back to Ohio to enjoy their retirement. They decided to build next door to the house she had grown up in, which happened to be on the property once owned by his grandparents! We worked together to develop a design that provided the classic detailing they wanted, while providing connected spaces filled with light. It was built with extra TLC too, with the homeowners doing everything from the rough framing to the interior trim themselves!

We undertook a complete gut renovation and redesign of our client’s home while they enjoyed their summer residence. Working six days a week, we ensured the project was finished in time for their return to Palm Beach for the winter season. Every design detail was meticulously curated to reflect their unique style and needs. When they arrived for the big reveal, they were thrilled to discover a stunning, entirely transformed home tailored specifically for them.

This client returned to our designers after buying a lakehouse that needed major remodeling. Their cabinetry, countertop and backsplash choices were nearly identical to the kitchen we designed and installed for them three years ago. Their choices were timeless with high-end brands such as Sub-Zero, Wolf, Cove for the appliances, R. D. Henry cabinetry, The Galley Workstation and Tap, Oskar collection hardware from Atlas, and exquisite quartzite.

This collaboration was with a return client, who wanted to completely restore and renovate her over 100-year-old Victorian. It was key for the homeowner maintained the original footprint of the home with full front to back views of the sound. A contemporary vision translated into slab doors in a navy high-gloss finish for the island and smoky white for the perimeter and upper cabinetry. Simple, satin nickel contemporary hardware reiterates the linear elements throughout. Interior detailing features rich walnut to complement the herringbone floors. The custom hood is hammered stainless steel to play off the plinth block island legs. The undeniable focal point is the stunning Calacatta Corchia marble selected for the countertops and full-height backsplash and walls. The lighting is a unique, suspended adjustable LED fixture. The twin side-by-side Sub-Zero Pro Fridge/Freezer columns include a glass front to highlight interior storage. The Wolf 60" range with pro handles features 2 30" full-size ovens, 6 burners, and a double griddle. The retractable doors in the wet bar cleverly close to hide the sink and bottle storage. The many windows bring lots of light into the space to make it a warm and inviting place to entertain friends and family.

Carmichael Ave: Custom Modern Home Build
We’re excited to finally share pictures of one of our favourite customer’s project. The Rahimi brothers came into our showroom and consulted with Jodi for their custom home build. At Castle Kitchens, we are able to help all customers including builders with meeting their budget and providing them with great designs for their end customer. We worked closely with the builder duo by looking after their project from design to installation. The final outcome was a design that ensured the best layout, balance, proportion, symmetry, designed to suit the style of the property. Our kitchen design team was a great resource for our customers with regard to mechanical and electrical input, colours, appliance selection, accessory suggestions, etc. We provide overall design services! The project features walnut accents all throughout the house that help add warmth into a modern space allowing it be welcoming.
Castle Kitchens was ultimately able to provide great design at great value to allow for a great return on the builders project. We look forward to showcasing another project with Rahimi brothers that we are currently working on soon for 2017, so stay tuned!

Just a stone’s throw away from the ocean, the house was designed and built by Willard Kent, a prominent Rhode Island architect, as his personal home in 1898. It is a large Shingle-Style home with a massive cross-gambrel roof giving it its name – the Four Gables. The “Gables” was largely conceived and built in the early Arts and Crafts style. This included well-considered, functional built-in seating and cabinetry in Douglas Fir.
Over the years, the Gables has changed hands quite a few times and recently was used as both a bed and breakfast and as a vacation rental prior to being purchased by Dave and Elizabeth Adams in 2016. The Adamses attended URI years ago prior to starting their family and careers. Now grandparents and soon-to-be retirees, they looked back to coastal Rhode Island for a family home with a history of its own. They were not specifically looking for the responsibilities that they inherited with the Four Gables, but they took them on with a passion and enthusiasm that has made our work, and the relationship we have with them, a high point for everyone at Picus.
The sun, wind and time had their way, and the exterior of the house was tired. Picus Woodwrights restored the exterior details to what we feel is a close rendering of the original siding, millwork and windows. Much of our work was restorative. When we could reuse original materials, we did and when we could not, they were reproduced. We re-sided the house with Red Cedar shingles. The house has a curved bay and areas where the side walls flare out. To maintain those details, we steam-bent the shingles on site. Most of the exterior trim was either restored or reproduced.
The interior presented several challenges. It had been chopped up a bit over the years and needed a new kitchen, updated plumbing and electrical wiring. We also added a dumbwaiter to move food between a basement freezer and the kitchen.
While our primary focus was on returning the house to its original state, we did make a few creative changes. We designed a custom stained-glass window to an exterior door. We also renovated a later “fishing shed” that was transported from Galilee, a nearby fishing village.
