This project was an exploration in taking and urban corner lot and transforming it into and urban farm of sorts. The project incorporated rainwater tanks, raised vegetable beds, fruit trees, chicken coop, prefab studio, composite deck, poured in place concrete, pre-cast concrete, custom wood features, a green wall, custom bench/fountain, lighting, swimming pool with solar hot water heating, an outdoor kitchen, drip irrigation which is controlled by smart phone, landscape lighting which can be controlled by smart phone. A fun project where we melded contemporary elements with sustainable/ self sufficient principles.

Slate Gray painted alder cabinets mixed with those fashioned from distressed oak keep the kitchen "piecy", as if renovated over time. We varied the styles and materials to provide an historic interest. Open shelves in reclaimed oak and antique iron brackets allow for casual and "at your fingertips" storage. Design ideas for a farmhouse backyard stone driveway in San Francisco.

It was pretty much a blank area but with some elevation issues. The seating wall served 2 purposes as a seating space but also to retain some of the patio. Natural fieldstone steppers lead from the driveway area to the patio. An assortment of perennials and plantings soften the hardscape project. Serviceberry, hybrid dogwood, and a large dwarf pine are the anchor plants. We also created a raised vegetable garden space off the patio too. Marc Depoto (Hillside Nurseries Inc.)

A purple hyacinth bean vine (Lablab purpureus) drapes one of the gateways. Planted as an annual in Pennsylvania it will grow up to 20’ in a season, producing purple/pink flowers and fabulous purple pods all summer long. The leaves, flowers and pods look beautiful both clambering on the fence and in mixed bouquets.
