Basement Development – Fort Sask Fitness
The Design Studio | MTS Renovations transformed an unfinished residential basement into a fully functional, home-based fitness gym—Fort Sask. Fitness. This custom-designed space provides an inviting yet high-performance environment tailored for personal training and fitness sessions.
Project Scope & Features:
Design & Permitting - We prepared concept design layouts that we converted to construction drawings. We prepared and submitted all permitting applications for this home based business and provided client representation through each phase of the project up to and including final occupancy inspection.
Space Planning & Layout Optimization – We maximized the existing footprint for optimal functionality, ensuring seamless equipment placement, circulation, and safety.
Flooring Selection – We installed durable, shock-absorbing gym flooring to support high-impact training and reduce noise transfer.
Lighting & Electrical Upgrades – We enhanced brightness and visibility with LED lighting, strategically placed for an energizing atmosphere. We added dedicated electrical circuits to accommodate specialized fitness equipment.
Ventilation & Climate Control – We incorporated efficient HVAC solutions to maintain air quality and temperature for a comfortable workout space.
Custom Storage & Organization – We integrated built-in under-stair equipment shelving and storage solutions for weights, resistance bands, and fitness accessories.
Aesthetic & Branding Integration – We designed a modern, motivating environment with finishes that align with the Fort Sask. Fitness brand identity.
Soundproofing Enhancements – We implemented acoustic treatments to minimize noise impact on the rest of the home.
By blending function with design, this basement transformation created a professional-grade fitness space that caters to both personal and client needs—all within the convenience of a residential setting.

The Setup
Situated between the front kitchen and the home’s primary living spaces, this bar was originally conceived as a modest bistro-style nook – a place to sit, watch TV, and enjoy a drink. As the design process evolved, both the homeowners and the design team recognized an opportunity to let the bar become something more: a visually compelling focal point that anchors circulation through the home while offering a distinct moment of hospitality.
Set within an arched recess and framed by a partial glass wall, the bar is visible from much of the public area of the home. Its location places it directly along the natural path between the kitchen, dining room, and family room, making it both highly accessible and impossible to ignore. From the outset, the goal was to ensure the bar felt intentional and complete – not an afterthought – while still complementing the adjacent kitchens rather than competing with them.
Design objectives:
Create a fully functional wet bar with refrigeration, ice, sink, waste storage, and liquor storage
Allow the bar to feel visually distinct while remaining cohesive with the surrounding spaces
Introduce color and character in a controlled, intentional way
Design the bar as a focal point within a highly visible circulation zone
Balance everyday usability with refined, layered design details
Design challenges to be solved:
Fitting a complete wet bar – including refrigeration, ice, sink, storage, and waste — into a base cabinetry run measuring under eight feet wide
Determining which appliances and storage functions were essential once upper cabinetry was eliminated
Providing adequate task lighting while also highlighting bottles and glassware on open shelving
Introducing texture and visual interest within the arched recess without overdesigning a compact space
Giving the bar a distinct identity that complements – but does not compete with – the adjacent kitchens
Design solutions:
Designing fully custom base cabinetry that prioritized core bar functions and used every inch efficiently, including split cabinetry and compact waste storage
Selecting a drawer-style refrigeration unit that combines refrigeration and freezer capabilities, allowing ice storage without sacrificing valuable width
Layering lighting with integrated LED strip lighting above and below the shelves, paired with decorative articulating fixtures to support both display and task lighting
Using a chevron-patterned natural stone tile backsplash to introduce movement, texture, and subtle color variation while keeping surrounding surfaces intentionally restrained
Specifying metal cabinetry in a soft blue tone with integrated brass framing to establish a distinctive visual identity that harmonizes with the home’s broader palette
A Space That Works on Its Own — and Within the Whole
Though compact in size, the bar carries significant visual and functional weight within the home. It stands confidently on its own as a richly detailed, fully functional destination, while also flowing naturally into the adjacent kitchens and living spaces. The result is a bar that feels purposeful rather than ornamental – a space designed to be used daily, noticed often, and appreciated over time.

This angle focuses on the storage strategy within a compact 16 m² primary bedroom. Floor-to-ceiling fitted wardrobes use the full height of the wall, while flat white fronts recede visually and provide generous storage without making the room feel heavy. The layout preserves comfortable circulation around a large upholstered bed and keeps the adjacent workspace easily accessible. Deep green bedding adds a personal, grounding accent to the otherwise light and neutral palette.

This compact bedroom uses custom fitted furniture to provide generous storage without sacrificing comfort around the bed. Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes connect with overhead cabinets to form one cohesive composition, making use of wall space that would otherwise remain empty. Integrated bedside drawers keep everyday essentials accessible, while suspended globe lights free the surfaces from table lamps. A geometric feature wall, warm neutral textiles, slim black handles, and a herringbone floor give the practical storage solution a distinctive contemporary character.

This evening view shows how a full storage wall, dressing mirror, and wall-mounted TV can fit into a compact bedroom without competing with the sleeping area. Handleless white wardrobes blend into the surrounding walls, concealing generous storage and reducing visual clutter. A full-length arched mirror supports the dressing routine while reflecting light and creating a greater sense of depth. Recessed ceiling lights provide practical overall illumination, while the bedside pendant and wall lights create a softer atmosphere for evening relaxation.

I was called out to clean a Porcelain tiled floor at a newly built property in Winwick near Huntingdon. The tiles were heavily marked with grout and dirt and were impossible to get clean. To make things worse the tiles were pale, almost white, in colour which made the staining more obvious. It was clear to me that the builder had not managed to polish off all the grout after tiling and this had now set hard on the surface.
This is a very common problem known as Grout Haze and fortunately there is a solution, in that it can be removed by giving the tiles a rinse with an acidic tile cleaner called Tile Doctor Grout Clean-up. To prove the point, I carried out a quick demonstration so the new owners could appreciate the difference.
I always like to test porcelain tiles for a reaction to acid prior to commencing work as acidic cleaners can have a negative effect on some types of polished porcelain however this one had a textured feel to it so there was no issue.
The test went well so having got the go head I began by first cleaning the tiles with a medium dilution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean, this was left for about ten minutes before being worked into the tile with a black scrubbing pad fitted to a rotary machine. I also used a stiff brush along the grout lines to make sure the grout was as clean as the tile.
This process generates a lot of soiling which was then extracted using a truck mount machine. By Truck Mount I’m referring to a powerful cleaning machine that’s fitted into my van, it blasts the floor with hot water and then immediately extracts it using an equally powerful vacuum to grey tank in the vehicle, it’s incredibly effective and leaves very little water on the floor afterwards.
The next step was to tackle the grout haze and this is done as before by Acid Washing the floor using a dilution of Tile Doctor Grout Clean-up and scrubbing into the tile as before. Again, the resultant soils were extracted as before using the truck mount.
The floor was then speed dried using Dripods which are small horizontal fans designed to blow air downwards and ideal for drying carpets and hard floors. Once dry, a coat of Tile Doctor Ultra-Seal was applied, left to dry and any excess buffed away with a White pad.
The work was completed in one day and completely transformed the floor much to the delight of my customer who left the following message in a subsequent email:
“Thank you very much indeed, we are delighted with the floor.”
I’m pleased to say I have since returned to the neighbourhood and completed another identical grout removal job at a neighbour’s property who had the same issue with builder.

Martins Avenue is a beautiful, curved staircase made out of steel as the base material. Curved stairs are a challenge because you need to get the soffit (the underside of the staircase) curved and twisted around the base of the stairs to get the nice flowing lines. And because the timber work was outsourced to other builders, we had to work closely alongside them in order to get the soffit curved just right and ensure everything matched the flooring.
The other big challenge was that the curved balustrade needed to be an identical match to the staircase and have a nice, smooth, curved line. In order to achieve this, we built both the steel stairs and balustrade in the shop at the same time and match drilled the balustrade through. Therefore when we brought it to site we knew it would fit perfectly. The angle on the bottom of the balustrade was designed to cover the junction or zig zag angle between the steel and the timber.
Because of how this staircase had to be designed and built, it was extremely heavy and a challenging install. Additionally, as the walls of the site were all finished, we had to take all the necessary precautions to get the stairs installed without causing any damage or leaving any markings. Afterwards, the builders covered the underside with gib and closed risers to hide the cladding underneath.
There was absolutely no room for error with this staircase and we at Stairworks, the builders and the clients are all extremely happy with the end result!

Set within a serene natural landscape and abutting the scenic Campbell's Scottish Highlands Golf Course, this striking custom modern home by RWH Architect blends contemporary architecture, functional living, and site-sensitive design into a residence that feels both dramatic and welcoming. Inspired by Scandinavian architectural principles and modern New England design, the home was carefully crafted to balance bold geometric forms with warm natural materials, creating a timeless luxury residence deeply connected to its surroundings. Expansive views overlooking the rolling fairways and natural landscape of the golf course further reinforce the home’s strong relationship to the site.
One of the primary design challenges of the project was fitting the home between two existing houses while maintaining a high level of privacy for both interior and exterior living spaces, while also maximizing expansive views of the course. Rather than allowing the surrounding structures to limit the design, RWH Architect carefully positioned and shaped the residence to create a sense of separation, openness, and visual connection where appropriate. Through thoughtful massing and strategic orientation, the home is able to open toward the golf course while shielding key living areas from neighboring properties, resulting in a balance of privacy, light, and uninterrupted views.
The architectural composition is defined by two soaring gabled structures connected through a recessed central entry, establishing a bold visual identity while maintaining clean, minimalist lines. A significant challenge in the design process was balancing the large-scale modern forms with a sense of warmth and livability. Through the use of natural wood accents, expansive glazing, and carefully proportioned massing, the home achieves a refined balance between contemporary minimalism and inviting residential comfort. Dark exterior cladding contrasts beautifully against warm materials and the surrounding landscape, allowing the structure to feel sophisticated without appearing cold or overpowering.
Another critical design challenge involved maximizing natural light while preserving energy efficiency and maintaining privacy throughout the home. RWH Architect carefully oriented the structure and strategically positioned the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows to capture sweeping golf course and landscape views while maintaining the comfort and privacy of the interior spaces. The result is a home filled with natural light that maintains a strong connection to the outdoors while still providing private, comfortable living environments.
Inside, the thoughtfully designed floor plan prioritizes openness, comfort, and flexibility for modern living. The residence was intentionally organized into two distinct architectural zones: a private wing dedicated to the bedrooms and personal retreats, and a public living wing centered around the kitchen, dining, and gathering spaces. This separation creates a natural balance between entertaining and privacy, allowing the home to function seamlessly for both intimate daily living and larger social gatherings.
The main living level centers around an expansive open-concept kitchen, dining area, and great room designed to function as the social heart of the home. One challenge within the interior layout was creating a highly open floor plan while still maintaining distinct functional zones and practical circulation. Through careful spatial planning, ceiling volume transitions, and strategic room positioning, the design creates separation without sacrificing openness. Large windows and direct access to the rear outdoor living spaces further reinforce the seamless indoor-outdoor connection, allowing the living spaces to fully embrace the surrounding views of the course and the natural landscape beyond.
Rather than existing on a single flat plane, the residence was thoughtfully designed across multiple levels that respond directly to the site’s natural topography. As occupants move through the home, subtle level changes and transitional stair sequences create a dynamic spatial experience that guides movement between the public and private zones of the residence. This layered circulation approach enhances the architectural character of the interior while creating moments of progression, discovery, and connection between spaces. The result is a home that feels immersive and expansive, where movement throughout the residence becomes part of the overall architectural experience itself.
The first floor also incorporates flexible private accommodations, including a guest suite with ensuite bathroom and additional secondary bedrooms positioned to create privacy away from the primary gathering spaces. This approach allows the residence to comfortably support multigenerational living, guests, and evolving family needs over time.
On the upper level, the luxurious primary suite serves as a private sanctuary complete with dual walk-in closets, a spacious spa-inspired bathroom, and access to a private balcony overlooking the property and adjacent golf course. Dedicated office spaces were intentionally integrated into the design to address the growing demand for functional remote work environments without compromising the home’s residential character. A centrally located laundry room further improves day-to-day convenience and efficiency. Vaulted ceilings, oversized glazing, and carefully framed sightlines enhance the sense of openness and light throughout the upper level.
Throughout the home, minimalist detailing and carefully selected materials reinforce the project’s modern architectural identity while preserving warmth and livability. The interplay of sharp rooflines, expansive glass, natural textures, and integrated landscaping creates a residence that feels sculptural from every angle while remaining exceptionally functional for everyday life.
This custom luxury residence exemplifies RWH Architect’s expertise in contemporary residential architecture, innovative problem solving, and personalized home design. By transforming complex site conditions and modern living demands into opportunities for architectural creativity, the project delivers a sophisticated home that is visually striking, highly functional, and thoughtfully connected to its environment for generations to come.
