Townhouse renovation in Brooklyn: We redesigned the rear end of the house as an expanded family kitchen with a back door to the deck. We also added a new connection from the entrance hall to the kitchen and fit a small powder room under the stairs. The old windows and doors were replaced with new, larger ones, and the entire kitchen was gutted and refitted with new cabinetry and a banquette dining area. “We were able to let natural light into the kitchen from both the east side and west side of the house. Before the remodel, our kitchen was dark because of the color scheme and having only the one window on the east side of the house. Now our kitchen/dining room is full of natural light!” The couple chose Semihandmade’s 30″ white Supermatte Shaker cabinetry and Shaker drawers along with white IKEA UTRUSTA shelving and drawer fronts and corner base cabinets with pullout fittings; white IKEA MAXIMERA drawers and pullout interior fittings.

Jenny was open to using IKEA cabinetry throughout, but ultimately decided on Semihandmade’s Light Gray Shaker door style. “I wanted to maximize storage, maintain affordability, and spice up visual interest by mixing up shelving and closed cabinets,” she says. “And I wanted to display nice looking things and hide uglier things, like Tupperware pieces.” This was key as her original kitchen was dark, cramped and had inefficient storage, such as wire racks pressed up against her refrigerator and limited counter space. To remedy this, the upper cabinetry is mixed asymmetrically throughout, over the long run of countertops along the wall by the refrigerator and above the food prep area and above the stove. “Stylistically, these cabinets blended well with the butcher block countertops and the large Moroccan/Spanish tile design on the floor,” she notes.

Top 3 design wishes: 1. Large island – We wanted a 9ft island and we achieved that. We wanted the dishwasher, microwave, sink and garbage drawer to be in the island 2. Nice Appliances – One of the things we really wanted was a large refrigerator/Freezer but didn’t know if it would be overbearing and if it would fit with the other things we wanted in the kitchen. We were able to fit the Electrolux Icon 64” wide refrig/freezer units and we couldn’t be happier. It is definitely something everyone notices right away. In addition, we went with Bosch appliances for everything else. (Range Hood, Drawer Microwave, 36” Induction Cooktop, Dishwasher and Oven) 3. No gap between the cabinets and the ceiling. On the other hand our ceilings were just over 9ft so we were able to use the standard cabinets with the 15” cabinets on top with deco strip. We definitely got the super-high IKEA Bobdyn kitchen we were looking to get.

Todd selected the IKEA VOXTORP and RINGHULT cabinet fronts and SEKTION cabinets because the product line checked three key boxes on his wish list: Great pricing, known quality and the modern design style he needed. Todd explains: “I spend a lot of time on HOUZZ and Pinterest so I had a clear vision of what I wanted. With this kitchen I knew that details are important and the closest IKEA is two hours away. I did not want to be making trips back and forth constantly. I wanted to go once, order, get them delivered and be done with it.” He notes that he bought a lot of the fixtures from Amazon, which included open box items to save on cost.

An island with a wood counter was added for additional storage and workspace in this white kitchen. Each side has deep drawers and there's space for cookbooks in the middle.
