As always searching for the lucky find, the original of this ‘30s Navy spotlight was unearthed in an antique store in Greenwich, England. In a way the light is a wonderful combination of old technology, romantic seafaring and practical lighting. Perched on its imposing rosewood tripod the light dominates, adding character to a room, an important element in today’s design philosophy. Our replica of 30s Navy spotlight is hand-crafted of brass and aluminum. This is signature for those who value master craftsmanship and technical skills. Coast guard patrol spotlight tripod lamp is a great addition to a now much appreciated collection of spotlights and tripod lamps.

As the white subway tile is continuous throughout the space, the designer felt strongly about keeping its form while also adhering to the functionality of the shower space. Instead of breaking the continuation, the subway tile, recesses and extrudes, providing the shower with shelving for soap, shampoo, and conditioner, as well as seating, all while keeping a unified and non imposing materiality.

This 1,398 SF home in central Austin feels much larger, holding its own with many more imposing homes on Kinney Avenue. Clerestory windows above with a 10 foot overhang allow wonderful natural light to pour in throughout the living spaces, while protecting the interior from the blistering Texas sun. The interiors are lively with varying ceiling heights, natural materials, and a soothing color palette. Our clients requested an energy-efficient escape home on a 16-acre site in rural Elgin that would be maintenance friendly, age-in-place adaptable, and whose sculptural quality could harbor for their expressive family. With its dominant east-west axis, the maximizes control of solar gain control; its placement was carefully adjusted to allow all of the nearby trees to thrive. The standing seam roof’s pitch and azimuth provide optimal solar PV and fills a 20,000-gallon rainwater cistern. The age-in-place, step-less interior provides an expansive view at the south terrace. The cantilever of the board-formed foundation is a structurally expressive solution resolving an otherwise imposing mass. The curved prow of the north-pointing entry is a nod to local Elgin brick. This dramatic remodel reinvigorated mid-century modern with an updated contemporary vibe after earlier updates had traditionalized the home. Completed in 2022, a significant reorganization of the space removed an existing fireplace and reallocated a living room to create a centrally located open-concept Kitchen and Dining Room. Dominating the kitchen is the spectacular emerald-toned glass cabinetry. Vivid and rich, the matte glass provides a depth and softness unmatched by painted cabinetry. Natural quartzite slabs wrap the waterfalled island and backsplashes, the unique graining provides interest without competing against the bold cabinetry. The home’s unique butterfly floorplan is reflected in the various angles incorporated into the architectural elements of the island, new walls and directing paths through offset openings. A series of interconnected beams, soffits, and columns impose spatial order and break the space into digestible visual components. The gas range is incorporated into a niche that contains a generous backbar, full-height backsplash and integrated spice storage. The island features brass inlays at slab breaks and a contrasting granite backchannel with an inconspicuous ‘scrubby-dubby cubby’ at one end for concealing cleaning supplies. The knee space is clad in the white oak planks of the floor, aligned and turned vertically as if folded. A distinctive black stained buffet with touch latch drawers is comprised of strips of cherry repurposed from paneling found in den. Matching woodwork is incorporated into the Foyer and wraps the Fireplace.

The goal was to transform the backyard into a lush garden oasis with a low-water and low-maintenance design. Despite challenges posed by the property's proximity to the golf course and specific guidelines, a harmonious integration of desert plant life and low-water lush plants was achieved. Reusing existing materials and replacing natural grass with synthetic turf minimized water usage, while strategic plant placement utilized run-off water for sustainable irrigation. Navigating the constraints imposed by the Country Club, the project created a cohesive outdoor space and repurposed cobblestones to bridge the gap between the golf course and the rear of the property. This project achieved a balance between ecological consciousness and aesthetic beauty, allowing the garden oasis to coexist harmoniously with the golf course backdrop, providing the clients with a serene and vibrant landscape that aligns with their vision and respects the natural resources of the community.

This deeply personal renovation took place in a home with rich family history—owned by the same family for generations and originally designed by notable architect, William Henry Kessler. Nestled in Harbor Springs, Michigan, the property hadn’t been touched since the 1970s. The clients, who had previously worked with O’Brien Harris on their main residence in the Detroit area, returned with a clear vision: honor the spirit of the home’s mid-century modern roots while creating something clean, smart, and unique. The architecture itself is quirky and full of character, and the design team, led by Lily Dierkes of LK Studio, leaned into those details. Rather than imposing a new aesthetic, the design was built around the home’s original DNA. The kitchen—though small—was treated as a design-forward space. O’Brien Harris brought in full-height cabinetry that wraps the entire lower perimeter of the room with no exposed drawers, allowing a clean, sculptural feel. The wood cabinetry was finished in a soft, low-sheen white paint and contrasted with bright yellow upper cabinets—a bold choice that felt perfectly suited to the spirit of the home. O’Brien Harris also crafted a built-in bookshelf and entertainment center for the living room, combining crisp painted cabinetry with leather cup pulls. Because of O’Brien Harris’ custom capabilities, their work extended well beyond the kitchen. They were engaged to design and fabricate custom built-ins throughout the home, including bedroom cabinetry and bespoke bunk beds—showcasing the craftsmanship and creativity that distinguish their work. This project is a true reflection of how O’Brien Harris brings thoughtful craftsmanship and custom solutions to every corner of the home.

Many recent renovations had already taken place at this phenomenal old Tudor home. The kitchen redo was saved for last. Our mission, imposed by our client, was to create a jaw-dropping, ultra-functional space for family and friends to gather in for years to come. Naturally, the new kitchen would have to reflect the style of the home seamlessly. One challenge was to incorporate very large professional style appliances into the space while keeping the feel of a stately, yet warm home. Custom wood panels were designed for the refrigerator units to give a furniture feel. A copper hood was designed to bring in an old world element. Wood panels were applied to all other appliances – two dishwashers, a wine refrigerator, and a beverage refrigerator. An iron I-beam that separated the original kitchen from the butler’s pantry and back entry was covered in wood with chamfers to match the other ceiling beams in the home by a local woodworker. Due to the age of the home, the outside walls are concrete block. This necessitated chiseling troughs into the concrete for electrical wiring. Ceilings were studded randomly, so finding openings for recessed lighting was hit or miss. A large cluster of wiring and plumbing to the second floor had to be hidden behind cabinetry to the left of and above the refrigerators. HVAC wasn’t straight forward either. Toe kick heaters from the old kitchen had to be replaced with other sources. A propane tank had to be added to fuel the large dual fuel, double oven range. The homeowner wanted to add a walk-in pantry for extra storage, so space was taken from an existing exterior space. This created the need for extra insulation, supplemental heat and added lighting. Needless to say, mechanicals were a big challenge. Natural stone was added in backsplash areas to the ceiling to mimic the rectangular stone on the exterior of the home. Wood panels fill the backsplash areas under wall cabinets. Large chandeliers light the space. Open shelves at the wet bar/prep area offer convenient storage for grab and go service items. A built-in pantry with antique mirrored mullion doors hides a microwave, several other small appliances as well as dishes and food items. This pantry was tucked into an alcove for an added architectural element. Herringbone wood floors are classic and timeless. Wrought iron hardware and shelf brackets fit right in. This master bedroom follows the aesthetics of the rest of the house, original architectural details were kept as is and everything including the wood floors were painted white. The shutters were our favorite detail of this space, the fact that everything is painted white it gave a certain airiness to the entire space where as it could have been more imposing.

This custom home’s goal was to create a beautiful and functional alpine retreat. A place for family and friends to gather. A warm, welcoming feeling that connected to nature was prioritized. Outside, there are arched timber trusses and stone accents. The home’s angles and extensive picture windows take advantage of panoramic three-story views. Front entry has vaulted ceiling and posts with rock bases. Full height rear chimney creates an imposing profile from the road below. Structural timbers and glulams lean into the decorative timber trusses, highlighting the rustic chalet inspiration.

The old conventional fireplace with mantle was large and imposing in the room, and TV was mounted a bit high.
