Inspiration for a mid-sized timeless porcelain tile mudroom remodel in DC Metro with beige walls and a white front door

The new owners of a 100 year plus Four Square home had many requests for the features to be included in their new kitchen with Quarter Sawn Red Oak cabinetry. An existing laundry chute is hidden in the cabinet to the left of the cooktop and it is balanced by an adjoining appliance garage. Pot and pan storage is in wide drawers under the cooktop. The drawers are flanked by a pull out spice and 2 can garbage pull out. The cornered sink works well with the location of the window. The base cabinet to the right of the dishwasher has a dish peg system in a deep drawer. A counter depth refrigerator, double oven cabinet with dividers for lids in deep drawer below and broom cabinet complete this wall. The U shape of the kitchen has granite tops with an antiqued finish while the 39" deep baking center is topped with Carrara Marble. Two appliance garages house various small appliances on this wall and the leaded glass insert lets in light from the back entrance. The removal of a back stair case made this unique baking center possible. Additional features include a magazine rack, message center and pull out tray storage.

The kitchen’s previous update was in 1960, and the space was cut up leaving it feeling disjointed and small. Almost half the space in the kitchen was used as a large butler’s pantry, and was further confined by a poor layout. By removing the wall separating the pantry, we were able to make a much larger, more comfortable space. The kitchen is outfitted with custom cabinets in a traditional inset shaker style door to fit the age of the home. Honed black granite countertops and handmade blue subway tile complete the period look. The kitchen has all of the modern conveniences, with high end appliances, including a built-in Miele coffee-maker in the area where the pantry once resided. Along the same wall, there is a desk with compartments for mail, bills and homework, which is a must for this busy family!

After 11 years on the Gull Lake chain in Nisswa, this couple decided to sell their cabin. Their current home has the lake view, pine trees and “up north” feel right here in Plymouth. The goal of this remodel was to incorporate some of the Nisswa cabin features into an “urban cabin”. The first step was, large windows were installed to take in the view of the lake. Some features borrowed from the cabin are the interior wood tongue & groove siding, ledge stone fireplace and scraped hickory flooring. Designer, Carol Kornak, reconfigured the appliance locations and reoriented the kitchen by added an island with eating space. And, a subtle but rewarding change occurred in the back hall. Often a bottleneck, the hallway to the garage was a catch-all for coats, boots, mail, etc. With a little design magic (by removing a wall, reducing pantry depth) and adding a boot bench and hooks for coats, the narrow hallway feels more spacious. To keep them organized there is a mail sorting and charging station hidden behind closed doors. Admittedly, the couple isn’t roughing it with their Wolf/Sub-Zero appliance package including refrigerator, wine cooler, cooktop, steam oven and warming drawer. The new cabinetry from Crystal Cabinet Works in rustic hickory and painted finish pairs beautifully with the two Cambria countertops and completes the transformation into the “Urban Cabin”. The only thing missing is the 2 ½ hour drive and the dock & boat. Luckily, Lake Minnetonka is only a short drive away.
