This paving and planting scheme features new hard landscaping elements and a new planting scheme. Artscape was initially briefed to extend and enhance the patio in the garden of a lovely home in the village of Cookham Dean in Berkshire. Our clients wanted to increase the size of the paved area so they could use it more frequently for relaxing and dining in the sun during the day. As well as increasing its size and practicality, they wanted the terrace to look and feel more inviting. The existing site was a mixture of brick paving, which was slippery underfoot, and tired concrete crazy paving. The patio also had stone retaining walls surrounded by sloped lawns and a few poorly maintained and mismatched shrubs.
Redesigned and repaved area
We first created a new, larger layout with a series of wider steps closer to the house, making a more inviting and welcoming area. Our landscapers paved the area with coursed sandstone, renowned for its incredible strength and durability. The earthy tones and unique texture of the sandstone gives it a natural timeless look which blends sympathetically with the garden setting. The worn finish of the paving also makes the surface safer to walk on. The edge of the paving curves in line from the end of the house to visually link the areas.
Bullnosed edges enhance looks and safety
Bullnosing provides the garden step edges with a smooth, luxury appearance, which also enhance safety. Safety is an important factor to consider when renovating or building new steps and paved areas. Smooth, rounded bullnosed steps or edges means there won’t be any harshly cut, sharp edges to injure someone should they trip or fall. Our Artscape paving experts can advise on the best bespoke, professionally profiled bullnose edges to suit the needs of your garden project.
Replacing sloped lawns with plants
Our initial brief was to create a new planted border just around the paved area. However, after various discussions and designs, our clients decided to follow our recommendation to expand the planting, so it included the whole sloping bank. The planting design also included the addition of small trees to create vertical interest.
New nature-friendly planting
The planting features an easy-to-maintain mix of perennials, grasses, and shrubs. This adds softness to the seating area and brings an everchanging display of flowers, foliage, textures and colours to the garden. The plants will attract more birds and butterflies to the garden, and will be beneficial for insects too.
The lawn was doing very little to support a diversity of insects and birds. Replacing even a small section of lawn with perennial flowers, shrubs, grasses, wildflowers, or groundcovers will benefit nature and wildlife. As well as supporting greater biodiversity, plants are more environmentally friendly than maintaining a lawn. Lawns are drought tolerant and will recover even if the grass has turned brown and patchy in a heatwave. But to keep the lawn looking lush, green, and beautiful in a hot, dry spell will require constant and wasteful watering.
The planting is informal and includes grasses, taking inspiration from the fields opposite. Ornamental grasses soften the scheme and bring movement to the garden as they shimmer in the slightest of breezes. Grasses are easy to grow and require little ongoing care. The main maintenance task is to cut the planting back in spring ready for the new growth to come through.
To keep the whole project within our client’s budget, we retained the existing walls, simply carrying out some small repairs and modifications where necessary. We were also able to add stunning new atmospheric lighting to the older existing lighting circuit to illuminate the area at night.
Find the right local pro for your project

These Northern Virginia residents have owned this vacation home for about ten years. With retirement imminent, they decided to give the entire home an over-haul. With it’s great bones and amazing location, this seemed like a very sound investment for their future. Paola McDonald from Olamar Interiors had been working with the clients for the past three years, helping them to renovate their Sterling, VA condominium and their Moorefield, WV weekend home. It seemed fitting that they would also hire her to help them renovate this home as well.
For this project we took the home down to the studs and practically rebuilt it. The renovation includes an addition to the basement level and main floor to create a new fitness room, additional guest bedroom and larger kitchen and dining area. It also included a renovation of the facade of the home. The exterior of the home was completely re-sided and painted, and we added the tall windows at the stairs. The lower entry deck was expanded and an upper deck was added just off the kitchen in order for the homeowner to keep his grill away from the strong ocean winds. A new deck was also added off of the master bedroom. New stainless steel railings were added to all the decks. We opened the homes stairwells, adding custom glass railings and new lighting to create a much more open feel and allow for natural light to flood the entire main living area. The original, tiny kitchen was expanded substantially, adding a large custom eat in bar, wine storage area and plenty of storage. We utilized Decora’s Marquis Cabinetry in an espresso finish to give the kitchen a very clean, contemporary feel. Carrara marble countertops paired with a grey quartz, single slap marble backsplash, and stainless appliances create a clean look. In the new dining area, a simple Modloft dining table was paired with a Regina Andrew bubbles chandelier and Jessica Charles dining chairs for a sophisticated feel accentuated perfectly by beachy colors and textures that tie in the beautiful views of the Ocean. A custom chandelier from John Pomp is the highlight of the family room, particularly at night when it is reminiscent to fireflies in the sky. A new custom designed, custom made sectional, cozy newly added Spark Modern Fires gas fireplace, custom rug by Julie Dasher and Lee Industries chairs create a cozy place to lounge and watch television after a long day at the beach. Guests feel like they are in a luxurious boutique hotel complete with spectacular views, comfortable Ann Gish linens and beautiful and unique lighting fixtures. All three full baths and the powder room received complete facelifts with new glass, marble and ceramic tiles, Decora cabinetry, new lighting fixtures, quartz countertops and unique features that make unique statements in each one. Phillip Jeffries mica wallpaper are used in the entryway and family room fireplace walls to add a sandy texture to each space. Phillip Jeffries grasscloth was added to the master bedroom accent wall to create a delicate feature. New flooring throughout includes gorgeous dark stained hardwood floors, ceramic tile and Karastan carpeting in the bedrooms. The crisp white and grey walls are accentuated throughout the home by beach inspired turquoises, navies and lime greens. Perfectly appointed furnishings, artwork, accessories and custom made window treatments complete the look and feel of this gorgeous vacation home.

This transitional kitchen design combines amazing stylish and practical features in one space. The result is an elegant, functional, and comfortable kitchen perfect for this busy family home. The Crystal Cabinets shaker style cabinetry features a white finish on the perimeter with a matching custom hood, contrasted by a dark wood finish on the island. This is accented by a white and gray countertop and white tile backsplash with a patterned backsplash feature behind the range. The design also incorporated a full beverage bar with upper glass front cabinet doors, a beverage bar sink, and an undercounter refrigerator. A full walk-in pantry includes white cabinetry with extra countertop work space for small appliances and food preparation. The project also included a mud room, that offers everything a busy household needs, including a bench, open shelving, cabinet lockers, and chalkboards, perfect for keeping the kids school and activity supplies organized.

Our clients in Tower Lakes, IL, needed more storage and functionality from their kitchen. They were primarily focused on finding the right combination of cabinets, shelves, and drawers that fit all their cookware, flatware, and appliances. They wanted a brighter, bigger space with a natural cooking flow and plenty of storage. Soffits and crown molding needed to be removed to make the kitchen feel larger. Redesign elements included: relocating the fridge, adding a baking station and coffee bar, and placing the microwave in the kitchen island.
Advance Design Studio’s Claudia Pop offered functional, creative, and unique solutions to the homeowners’ problems. Our clients wanted a unique kitchen that was not completely white, a balance of design and function. Claudia offered functional, creative, and unique solutions to Chad and Karen’s kitchen design challenges. The first thing to go was soffits. Today, most kitchens can benefit from the added height and space; removing soffits is nearly always step one. Steely gray-blue was the color of choice for a freshly unique look bringing a sophisticated-looking space to wrap around the fresh new kitchen. Cherry cabinetry in a true brown stain compliments the stormy accents with sharp contrasting white Cambria quartz top balancing out the space with a dramatic flair.
“We wanted something unique and special in this space, something none of the neighbors would have,” said Claudia.
The dramatic veined Cambria countertops continue upward into a backsplash behind three complimentary open shelves. These countertops provide visual texture and movement in the kitchen. The kitchen includes two larder cabinets for both the coffee bar and baking station. The kitchen is now functional and unique in design.
“When we design a new kitchen space, as designers, we are always looking for ways to balance interesting design elements with practical functionality,” Claudia said. “This kitchen’s new design is not only way more functional but is stunning in a way a piece of art can catch one’s attention.”
Decorative mullions with mirrored inserts sit atop dual sentinel pantries flanking the new refrigerator, while a 48″ dual fuel Wolf range replaced the island cooktop and double oven. The new microwave is cleverly hidden within the island, eliminating the cluttered counter and attention-grabbing wall of stainless steel from the previous space.
The family room was completely renovated, including a beautifully functional entertainment bar with the same combination of woods and stone as the kitchen and coffee bar. Mesh inserts instead of plain glass add visual texture while revealing pristine glassware. Handcrafted built-ins surround the fireplace.
The beautiful and efficient design created by designer Claudia transitioned directly to the installation team seamlessly, much like the basement project experience Chad and Karen enjoyed previously.
“We definitely will and have recommended Advance Design Studio to friends who are looking to embark on a project small or large,” Karen said.
“Everything that was designed and built exactly how we envisioned it, and we are really enjoying it to its full potential,” Karen said.

This beautiful custom wine cellar / wine wall / wine room in San Juan Capistrano, Orange County, California is truly a jaw dropper. Vintage Cellars, wine cellar builders out of san diego, california, were able to design and build this masterpiece as a major centerpoint of this dining room and kitchen.
A custom wine cellar designed and built by vintage wine cellars out of San Diego, California - this custom wine wall has tons of unique and noteworthy features throughout. The bottom of the cellar begins with multiple areas for wine case storage and other bulk storage options. The great thing about this space is that it was designed for multi-use capability, leaving ample room to store multiple layers deep of single bottle storage as well.
Directly above the case storage lie multiple layers of easy pull out shelving on smooth rolling tracks, seamlessly allowing for drawer sliding with no risk of bottle movement or abrupt stops. These are fantastic features to have, especially in the case of having flights of wines from your favorite wineries. A collection of 2010 through 2016 Larkmeade Cabernet Sauvignon bottles from Napa have never looked so good.
In the center, a small countertop and opening are used for a practical space to open and decant wines. Glass shelving features and acrylic wine racking dividers make for a fun, transparent, and sleek looking centerpiece.
On either side of this wine wall feature / kitchen wine cellar are long rows of high reveal display of wine bottles, carefully designed and engineered to lay down properly so that the cork will stay wet and wines are aged perfectly and gracefully over time. These display rows act as fantastic "show off" sections - perfectly highlighting each bottle's respective label and giving you the ability to really display your gems.
More sections sit above these displays, turning the bottles inward and facing them cork out. In this certain circumstance and with this specific client's collection, these sections really popped with color and intrigue with many cases of the same wines being placed into the racking. Intense hues of Red and Yellow POP, keeping this wine cellar interesting and a pleasure to look at no matter what section you're exploring.
Horizontal stainless steel metal rods are Integrated into the custom cabinetry horizontally and angled across each multiple sections, again offering another unique and different design feature, now with wine bottle labels facing outward and completely visible. This look in custom wine wall / custom wine cellar / custom wine room / custom wine display / custom wine storage solutions is a great way to integrate modern nuances into your cellar. Accents of metal into an otherwise "traditional" wooden wine cellar can actually add a unique change of pace and give an entire new breath of life to an existing wine storage space.
700 bottle capacity, with room for magnum storage above.

The project also included a mud room, that offers everything a busy household needs, including a bench, open shelving, cabinet lockers, and chalkboards, perfect for keeping the kids school and activity supplies organized.

This project transformed an underutilized space beneath our clients' modern residence into a functional and luxurious lower-level addition featuring a light-filled guest suite and exercise room. A new stairwell, framed by custom steel railings, connects the main floor to the lower level, enhancing visual flow and natural lighting while complementing the home's modern aesthetic. Polished concrete floors with radiant heating provide year-round comfort while the guest suite, with a luxury en suite bathroom including a steam shower, can also function as a home office. Large articulating Nanawall doors open the exercise room to the exterior, including a sauna room, and the built-in beverage station allows for quick refreshments.
The project required innovative solutions to address structural constraints and property setbacks, including designing a code-compliant staircase within tight spatial limits, excavating a crawlspace to achieve full-height ceilings, and working around foundation walls to maximize usable space. By blending functionality, style, and attention to detail, this addition exceeded the clients' expectations, providing a cohesive, luxurious, and highly practical enhancement to their home.

Creating a dream bedroom involves more than just selecting furniture and color schemes; it’s about curating every detail to reflect your personal style and provide comfort. One of the most impactful elements in achieving this is choosing the right area rug. Whether you envision a serene sanctuary or a chic retreat, the perfect rug can enhance your bedroom decor and make a striking statement.
Imagine stepping into a bedroom where the first thing that greets you is a luxurious hand-tufted rug, its rich textures and plush pile inviting you to sink your toes into its softness. Hand-tufted rugs offer not only comfort but also a touch of artistry, with designs that can range from contemporary geometric patterns to traditional motifs. For those who appreciate the craftsmanship of a bygone era, hand-knotted rugs bring an unparalleled level of detail and durability, making them timeless treasures in any bedroom setting.
If a more modern or transitional look is what you’re after, machine-woven and heat-set rugs provide both style and practicality. These rugs, available in various patterns and vibrant colors, are designed to maintain their appearance and texture with minimal maintenance. Machine-washable options add an extra layer of convenience, ensuring that your rug remains fresh and clean even in the most active spaces.
For a touch of classic elegance, consider flat-woven rugs such as kilims, known for their reversible design and lightweight feel. These rugs offer a textured look and can seamlessly blend into both traditional and contemporary decors. Hand-loomed rugs also fall into this category, offering a handcrafted quality that adds uniqueness to your bedroom while maintaining a sophisticated edge.
Shag and flokati rugs are perfect for those who value comfort and a cozy ambiance. Their long, plush fibers create a sumptuous feel underfoot, making them ideal for creating a warm and inviting space. Meanwhile, braided and hand-hooked rugs add an artisanal charm and a bit of rustic flair, while organic and distressed designs bring a natural, lived-in feel to the room.
When selecting your area rug, it’s important to consider practical features to enhance both safety and durability. Non-slip and adhesive backings ensure that your rug stays securely in place, protecting hardwood floors from potential damage. Water-resistant and stain-resistant properties make these rugs practical choices for busy bedrooms, while cushioned options add an extra layer of comfort.
Personalization is key in making a space uniquely yours. Rug sets, including options sized like 8x10, allow you to create a cohesive look that fits perfectly within your room's dimensions. Whether you opt for contemporary designs with fringe details or traditional patterns with intricate textures, there’s a rug that can meet your needs.
In summary, the 15 best area rugs are not just about covering the floor; they’re about adding personality and comfort to your bedroom. With a variety of styles ranging from modern to traditional, and features that cater to both aesthetic and functional needs, the right rug can transform your bedroom into a personal oasis of style and comfort.

Improve your living space with the ideal area rug, a key element in enhancing your home's style and comfort. Whether you’re updating your bedroom decor or outfitting your living room, selecting the right rug can transform any area, adding warmth, texture, and a distinctive touch to your space.
For those looking to upgrade their bedroom or living room, area rugs come in a range of styles and materials to suit various tastes and needs. Hand-tufted and hand-knotted rugs offer timeless elegance with their intricate designs and luxurious textures. These handcrafted options are perfect for adding a sophisticated element to your bedroom decor or living room. Hand-loomed rugs, with their artisanal craftsmanship, bring a unique, personalized touch to any room, making them ideal for those who appreciate detailed, bespoke designs.
If you prefer a modern aesthetic, machine-woven rugs provide a practical yet stylish solution. These rugs are available in a variety of patterns and colors and are designed to withstand high foot traffic, making them a durable choice for busy areas. For a more contemporary feel, flat-woven rugs, such as kilims, offer a reversible design that fits seamlessly with both modern and traditional decor themes.
For added comfort and style, consider shag or flokati rugs. Their plush, long fibers create a cozy atmosphere and are perfect for a living room where comfort is key. These rugs are especially suited for spaces where you want to relax and enjoy a soft, inviting texture underfoot.
When it comes to functionality, choosing a rug that is machine washable, stain-resistant, and water-resistant ensures longevity and ease of maintenance. These practical features are essential for busy households and high-traffic areas, helping to keep your rug looking fresh and clean. Non-slip and adhesive backings are also crucial, especially on hardwood floors, to prevent slips and ensure the rug remains securely in place.
For those looking to make a statement, large rugs for the living room or oversized area rugs, such as 8x10 options, can define and elevate your space. Large carpets provide substantial coverage and can anchor a room, adding a sense of scale and sophistication. Whether you opt for a big rug for the living room or a huge carpet to cover a larger area, these choices offer versatility and style.
In addition to large living room rugs, consider rug sets or personalized options to further enhance your decor. Custom rugs with features like fringe or organic textures can add a distinctive element to your space, reflecting your personal style and complementing your existing decor.
To ensure your rug enhances the overall look of your room, consider how it aligns with your decor theme. Contemporary and modern designs offer sleek, clean lines and bold patterns, while traditional and mid-century modern styles provide a more classic or retro look. Transitional rugs blend elements from both traditional and modern styles, offering flexibility and a timeless appeal.
In summary, selecting the right area rug involves balancing aesthetics with practicality. From luxurious hand-tufted and hand-knotted designs to functional machine-woven and flat-woven options, the perfect rug can elevate your living room, bedroom, or kitchen into a stylish and comfortable haven. Explore the vast array of choices available, including large living room rugs and personalized designs, to find the ideal rug that meets both your decorative and functional needs.

This bathroom needed help as it was tired, dated and cramped! The vanity area was open to the master bedroom and sandwiched between a closet and existing bathroom wall. Behind the bathroom wall, was a second sink, a small walk-in shower and the commode. A poorly placed linen closet ate into the area and there was a soffit over the shower adding to the cramped feeling. The ceiling was cluttered with old-school heating lamps, flush-mount fixtures and ventilation grills. The “movie star” lighting meant to add some glamour only made the bathroom feel dated and sad. Our clients wanted to bring this bathroom to life.
We built a wall and added a door between the bedroom and bathroom to ensure more privacy and define the space. In addition, we removed the wall separating the actual bathroom and vanity area to make the master bathroom larger. The linen closet was also taken out so the shower could be expanded significantly. Our homeowner had recently suffered a knee injury so they were looking for future solutions that would work for them as they continued to age. We made the shower large enough to include a bench and installed a handheld sprayer located near the seat. Shower walls were reinforced so that when the day came that a grab bar was needed, they would be ready.
We added a tall cabinet that featured two, deep rollouts and interior shelving to keep linens and bathroom supplies organized. Beneath the sinks, we included rollout drawers so items would not get lost in those dark areas under the plumbing. Everything that had been cluttering the ceiling was removed including the shower soffit and heat lamp. With those gone, we added evenly-spaced, recessed ceiling lights to help brighten the space making it safer and more practical.
We chose a custom blue-green paint for the cabinets which was understated enough to provide a sense of serenity while still offering a splash of color to help liven up the room. Walnut-framed mirrors added a touch of warmth and the patterned floor tile made the whole room fun! An old bathroom came alive!

Master Bathroom Remodeling in Ambler, PA – A Complete Transformation by BMR Belmax Remodeling
At BMR Belmax Remodeling, we specialize in creating beautiful, functional, and luxurious bathroom spaces tailored to our clients’ needs. One of our most recent projects involved a master bathroom remodeling in Ambler, PA, where we completely reimagined the layout to maximize space, improve functionality, and enhance aesthetics. The result was a modern, spacious, and inviting master bathroom that perfectly suited the homeowner’s vision.
The Challenge: An Outdated and Divided Bathroom
The original master bathroom in Ambler, PA was divided into two separate rooms. One area housed a vanity and closet, while the other contained the shower and toilet. While functional, this layout felt cramped, disjointed, and inefficient. The homeowners wanted to merge these two spaces into a single, cohesive master bathroom that felt larger, more open, and more luxurious.
They envisioned a modern walk-in shower, enhanced storage, better lighting, and high-end finishes, all while improving the flow and accessibility of the space. Our team at BMR Belmax Remodeling worked closely with them to develop a design that addressed their needs and transformed their bathroom into a modern retreat.
The Transformation: A Unified & Modern Master Bathroom
Our approach to this bathroom renovation in Ambler, PA focused on space optimization, luxury finishes, and functionality. We combined the two separate rooms into one expansive master bathroom, making the space feel more open and elegant.
1. Layout Reconfiguration & Wall Removal
We removed the dividing wall between the shower and vanity area to open up the space and create a more seamless layout.
A new wall was built to expand the shower area, allowing for a larger and more comfortable walk-in shower.
The closet and vanity space were integrated into the main bathroom layout, eliminating the need for a separate entryway and making the space more efficient and accessible.
2. Walk-In Shower with Premium Features
A stunning walk-in shower with sleek glass doors was installed to give the bathroom a modern and luxurious look.
We used large-format tiles on the shower walls and flooring, creating a cohesive, stylish, and low-maintenance surface.
A built-in recessed niche with a custom tile shelf was added for practical storage while maintaining a clean and sophisticated design.
3. Vanity & Storage Enhancements
The old vanity was replaced with a sleek, modern vanity that provided ample storage and counter space.
We incorporated custom-built shelves on the left side of the vanity, offering additional storage without cluttering the design.
A lighted mirror was installed above the vanity, combining style and practicality while enhancing the overall lighting in the space.
4. Elegant Fixtures & Finishes
To add a touch of luxury, we installed gold-finished fixtures, including the showerhead, faucets, and cabinet handles, giving the bathroom a high-end, elegant feel.
A modern one-piece toilet was installed to complement the clean and minimalist design.
The bathroom’s neutral color palette and textured finishes created a calm and inviting atmosphere.
5. Enhanced Ventilation & Lighting
A new exhaust fan was installed to improve air circulation and moisture control, ensuring a comfortable and mold-free environment.
Additional task lighting and ambient lighting were carefully placed to make the bathroom bright, warm, and inviting.
The Result: A Stunning, Spacious, and Functional Master Bathroom
The completed master bathroom remodeling in Ambler, PA is now a spacious, modern retreat that perfectly blends style and functionality. By unifying the previously divided rooms, we created a flowing and open space that feels larger and more inviting. The walk-in shower, gold fixtures, and custom vanity elevate the aesthetics, while the recessed niche, built-in shelves, and enhanced lighting provide practicality and comfort.
The homeowner was thrilled with the transformation, noting how much brighter, more functional, and elegant the space now feels. They particularly loved how the layout reconfiguration made the space more open and efficient, as well as the luxurious finishes that added a high-end touch.
