As you step inside, an open floor plan incorporates the grand living room, dining room and kitchen all together as one open space. A wood-burning fireplace, large kitchen island, powder room and the guest suite with its private bath, are just some of the features that make the main floor both comfortable and practical for family living. The master suite includes a beautiful glass enclosed shower, a free-standing tub, and expansive walk-in closet. As you transition up the spacious u-shaped staircase, the second floor reveals a sitting area and two additional bedrooms along with two full baths. Designed as assignment from both the Dutch gardening magazine Groei & Bloei and the television and radio nature program Vara's Vroege Vogels, this garden serves as a model of how homeowners can incorporate lots of plant life and wildlife into the design but without sacrificing practicality or aesthetics. The garden is deliberately contemporary in its style to emphasize that nature-rich gardens need not look a certain way - insects and birds don't care if the lines are straight or curved.
At the same time the garden makes use of affordable, simple, no-nonsense materials. The 40x60 cm paving stones are one of the most common and affordable paving options in the Netherlands, available en masse for free on the Internet. Conceptually we imagined a garden completely paved with the tiles (as to many gardens are) and what would happen if took out some of these stones, used them to build benches and structure and added plants where the tiles had been. In the construction of the benches we include other materials such as bamboo sticks and insulation bricks that create habitat for insects such as solitary bees.
The plant palette is based on a selection of native and host plants in combination with the 26 plants plan set up by Groei & Boei -- a list of plants aimed at making the use of more plants in gardens accessible and less intimidating. The choice for the number 26 corresponds with the number of letters in the alphabet in line with the famous Dutch garden designer Mien Ruy's comment that if we only need 26 letters to create a whole language, we should be able to combine and mix 26 plants to express far more than we think.

Projects like this don’t happen overnight, nor do they happen single handedly. And knowing all the hours spent planning & executing the build with pride & detail makes the “Wow Factor” even greater for us. We were able to transform this backyard into a grand expanse of lovely, usable, and inviting space; from the outdoor kitchen & bar on the upper deck – to the warm fireplace and comfy couches in the porch, there is plenty of room to kick back and enjoy the day. Using a combination of materials and timeless colors, it creates the feeling that this new addition has been here since the beginning & aged perfectly. Not shown but included in the design; a storage room under the full length of the porch, a stamped concrete walkway leading to the driveway, and a private “pitch & putt” green to practice the perfect swing.

Give your deck the edge with beautiful, durable and low maintenance of high-performance Trex Fascia. It’s now available to match each Trex decking and railing collection, including an all-white that complements practically any outdoor living element.

Three projects at once?! Why not? These were some brave customers! We started by gutting the kitchen and the master bathroom at the same time. By the time the master was in working order, we tackled the hall bathroom. A succinct and perfectly timed series of projects.
John Noland expertly designed this roomy kitchen to create better flow for cooking and entertaining. He used Fieldstone Bainbridge cabinets in Butterscotch. The new speed oven and wall oven were moved conveniently to the other side of the bar, giving more room for the refrigerator, and a large induction cooktop. The kitchen now had the practicality it was missing. Other features include the natural stone tile floor in a pin wheel design, the large island for seating and storage and all topped by peacock green granite. The homeowners provided a reception at the completion of the project which was much appreciated by all of the contractors working on the job!

Our clients were relocating from the upper peninsula to the lower peninsula and wanted to design a retirement home on their Lake Michigan property. The topography of their lot allowed for a walk out basement which is practically unheard of with how close they are to the water. Their view is fantastic, and the goal was of course to take advantage of the view from all three levels. The positioning of the windows on the main and upper levels is such that you feel as if you are on a boat, water as far as the eye can see. They were striving for a Hamptons / Coastal, casual, architectural style. The finished product is just over 6,200 square feet and includes 2 master suites, 2 guest bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, sunroom, home bar, home gym, dedicated seasonal gear / equipment storage, table tennis game room, sauna, and bonus room above the attached garage. All the exterior finishes are low maintenance, vinyl, and composite materials to withstand the blowing sands from the Lake Michigan shoreline.

This LEED-certified project was a substantial rebuild of a 1960s home, preserving the original foundation to the extent possible, with a small amount of new area, a reconfigured floor plan, and newly envisioned massing. The design is simple and modern, with floor to ceiling glazing along the rear, connecting the interior living spaces to the landscape. The design process was informed by building science best practices, including solar orientation, triple glazing, rainscreen exterior cladding, and a thermal envelope that far exceeds code requirements.

Who wouldn’t feel at home in this beautiful eat-in kitchen? The open layout, classy white cabinets, and the sunshine streaming through the window combine to form a kitchen that’s functional and welcoming—the kind where you can easily imagine the delightful odors of fresh herbs and fragrant spices mingling with the laughter and chatter of friends and family. A closer look reveals a number of design ideas that might be useful if you’re looking to create a similar ambiance in your own home.
This design takes advantage of natural sunlight by pairing a large window with a light color scheme that makes the space bright and airy. No detail has been overlooked, as evidenced by the glass hexagon backsplash that serves as an accent. The interlocking glass tiles create a lovely pattern of varying neutral tones that gives just the right amount of energy to the space. The cabinets are equally as tasteful, finished with an elegant crown molding. The gray cabinet island with white cabinets creates a stylish two-tone look and adds a splash of contrast, and the spacious island includes both an impressive cooktop and a bar—adding more seating and extra workspace.
Of course, the countertop is an essential part of any kitchen, but it’s especially important to choose the right one in a design that includes such a large work surface. The kitchen countertop has to look good—after all, it’s the element that ties the rest of the design together—but it also needs to be a functional surface that can handle the tomato sauce or red wine spill, whatever might be on the kids’ sticky fingers, and the wear and tear of everyday use. A quartz kitchen, like this one, doesn’t have to sacrifice its looks to be practical. This luxurious white quartz countertop with delicate, swirling gray veins ties the color palette together and glitters in the sun—but it’s also a durable work space. The engineered stone used here is a Calacatta Verona Quartz, one of many choices that Sky Marble offers as part of our extensive quartz selection. Calacatta Verona Quartz has all the classic beauty of marble, doesn’t require ongoing maintenance, and can stand up to many, many years of family dinners or cocktail parties. And it’s an excellent choice for this kitchen’s color scheme, maximizing the natural lighting and seamlessly uniting the gray of the island and the white of the other cabinets.
Altogether, this contemporary kitchen style strikes the perfect balance between elegance and warmth. At Sky Marble in Sterling, VA, we can help you find just the right look to make your kitchen ideas for make your new build or renovation project a similar success.

When Dr. Deborah Loth relocated her very established endodontic practice from Arlington to Fort Worth, she requested that her new offices reflect a “retro cowboy” theme. IDG selected warm materials, including wood, stone and laser cut panels to establish an organic, outdoor theme. To enliven the crisp white walls, the designers used bright orange and deep aqua accents, reminiscent of the Southwest. The selection of a custom cowhide rug, wall hanging and a large western painting reinforced the urban coyboy mystique.

In the world of bedroom decor, the right area rug can transform your space from ordinary to extraordinary. With a multitude of styles, materials, and features, finding the perfect rug involves balancing aesthetics with functionality to suit your personal taste and lifestyle.
For a touch of sophistication and artistry, hand-tufted and hand-knotted rugs offer intricate craftsmanship and timeless appeal. Hand-tufted rugs provide a plush texture that enhances comfort, while hand-knotted rugs are known for their durability and exquisite detail. If you prefer a classic look with versatility, flat-woven options like kilims deliver a lightweight, reversible design that complements both traditional and contemporary settings.
Machine-woven rugs are ideal for those seeking modern efficiency without sacrificing style. These rugs come in a variety of patterns and colors, and many are machine washable, making them easy to maintain. For a high-traffic area, consider a rug with stain-resistant and water-resistant properties to keep your space looking pristine.
If you love the feel of soft textures underfoot, shag or flokati rugs offer a plush, cozy experience, perfect for creating a warm and inviting bedroom atmosphere. Similarly, hand-loomed rugs provide a unique touch with their artisanal quality and varied textures. Braided and hand-hooked rugs also add a charming, handcrafted element to your bedroom decor.
For those concerned about safety and practicality, non-slip rugs with adhesive backings ensure that your rug stays in place, protecting both the rug and your hardwood floors. Cushioned rugs offer added comfort and are gentle on the feet, enhancing the overall coziness of your bedroom.
A personalized touch can make a rug truly special. Custom rug sets, including sizes like 8x10, allow you to tailor the rug to fit your space precisely. Whether you prefer a contemporary design with sleek lines and fringe details or a traditional rug with rich, textured patterns, the right rug can anchor your room and reflect your style.
From contemporary and modern to traditional and mid-century modern, the 15 best area rugs cater to a wide range of tastes and needs. Whether you’re updating your bedroom decor or starting from scratch, incorporating the perfect rug can elevate your space, adding both beauty and function.
In summary, the right area rug is more than just a floor covering—it’s a statement piece that enhances your bedroom’s decor and comfort. With options ranging from hand-knotted elegance to machine-woven practicality, and features designed for both style and durability, you can find the perfect rug to suit your needs and elevate your bedroom experience.
