This home had an existing pool that badly needed to be remodeled along with needing a space to entertain while protected from the outdoor elements. The pool was remodeled by integrating a new custom spa with water feature, updating all of the materials & finishes around the pool, and changing the entry into the pool with a new baja shelf. A large California room patio cover integrates a fireplace, outdoor kitchen with dining area, and lounge area for conversating, relaxing, and watching TV. A fun and funky 'Victorian' home in downtown San Luis Obispo remodeled with Brookhaven cabinetry. The kitchen is tucked in a corner below the stairs which may have been a porch in a former life. We staggered the heights of the upper cabinets to get the most out of the space. Adding glass to the tops of the doors provided visual organization to the various crown heights and also lets the homeowners display their antiques. We created coffered ceilings over the original cement ceiling in order to add LED lighting. A sleeper sofa increases the capacity for overnight guests, and the leather ottoman has a built-in tray center for drinks and snacks. Blush-orange armchairs in a mini print pattern introduce a new color, which is echoed in throw pillows and artwork. The open etagere houses collections and books without closing in the space. This young family began working with us after struggling with their previous contractor. They were over budget and not achieving what they really needed with the addition they were proposing. Rather than extend the existing footprint of their house as had been suggested, we proposed completely changing the orientation of their separate kitchen, living room, dining room, and sunroom and opening it all up to an open floor plan. By changing the configuration of doors and windows to better suit the new layout and sight lines, we were able to improve the views of their beautiful backyard and increase the natural light allowed into the spaces. We raised the floor in the sunroom to allow for a level cohesive floor throughout the areas. Their extended kitchen now has a nice sitting area within the kitchen to allow for conversation with friends and family during meal prep and entertaining. The sitting area opens to a full dining room with built in buffet and hutch that functions as a serving station. Conscious thought was given that all “permanent” selections such as cabinetry and countertops were designed to suit the masses, with a splash of this homeowner’s individual style in the double herringbone soft gray tile of the backsplash, the mitred edge of the island countertop, and the mixture of metals in the plumbing and lighting fixtures. Careful consideration was given to the function of each cabinet and organization and storage was maximized. This family is now able to entertain their extended family with seating for 18 and not only enjoy entertaining in a space that feels open and inviting, but also enjoy sitting down as a family for the simple pleasure of supper together.

In this photo, this client wanted an entertaining space divided into three areas (bar, game room and home theatre). There is a beautiful maple bar that this client wanted incorporated into their space. The challenge was where they wanted it located. The mechanical ductwork was going to interfere with their seating head room and inhibit the viewing of the screen. We were able to place it in the middle of the longest portion of the basement solving both issues as well as increasing the size of the gaming area. A bulkhead was created to take up the small space above the shelving to provide a finished look. We were able to recess the refrigerator so the front didn’t intrude into the walkway. Room definition was added by the short walls at the four corners of the space as well as minimally lowering the ceiling allowing us to create the tray ceiling that follows the perimeter and outlines the bar.
