Passion project of our Dendochronologist client and his family, this addition shelters a set of spaces meant to feel both indoors and outdoors. Conditioned only by sun, wind, and the woodstove, the room functions as a multi-purpose glazed porch.
Surrounding the 1950 house of a style so common in the New England Landscape, our client has worked for a decade to “re-wild” the suburban yard with plantings gathered on fieldtrips around the region. Turning its back to the house, this addition treads lightly into this rich and textured landscape.
As the largest room in the house, it will host Thanksgiving dinner as well as it shelters quiet reading by the fire and cocktail parties in the gallery space and cookouts on the back porch. Aligned to extend our addition as close to the property line as bylaws permit, a diagonal wall also expresses the inside-outside connection’s incremental expansion to the North. Structure, shelter, enclosure, and fenestration act and and react to each other to modulate inhabitants’ relative senses of prospect and refuge. The Donna Dodson sculpture Redwing Rose was commissioned for the space.

TruLine 1.6 5W 24VDC Plaster-In LED System creates a clean line of glare free general illumination within drywall. The linear LED system features a shallow .6 inch deep plaster in aluminum extrusion no thicker than drywall that houses two 2.5 watt rows of high CRI commercial grade white LED Soft Strip. Its 1.6 inch wide diffuser lens projects a clean line of light without LED dots. System mounts directly to studs without joist modification. TruLine is sold in 1 foot increments up to 40 feet at 5 watts per foot, 85+ CRI, in 2700K Very Warm White or 3000K Warm White color temperature, delivering 243 lumens per foot. 50,000 hour average lamp life. TruLine extrusion may be field cut. LED Soft Strip may be cut every 2.4 inches. TruLine runs in a straight line. The LED strip bends along the LED plane, allowing runs to continue from a wall onto a ceiling. Intersecting runs on the samewall require two separate TruLine systems. System includes TruLine 1.6 channels, end caps, LED Soft Strip, TL1.6 special junction box (quantity 2) and all mounting hardware. Power supply options include a Class 2 24 volt 0-10 96 or 192 watt dimmable with a Lightolier Sunrise ZP600FAM120; Leviton IP710-DL; Lutron Radio Ra2 with Grafik Eye, RRD-10ND and GRX-TVI; Grafik Eye QS with Grafik Eye, QSGRJ-XP and GRX-TVI; Diva with Grafik Eye, DVTV and PP20; Nova T with Grafik Eye, NTFTV-WH and PP20, sold separately. Indoor applications only. Fixture includes a 5 year warranty. Made in USA.

Rooted within the mountain landscape, this 3,500 square foot residence seeks to balance rugged and refined architectural expression through incremental evolution. Stacked stone, taken from the site itself, composes the terraced, plinth base of the home. With each level, there is a progressive increase in the degree of refinement, light, and craftsmanship to be found - the pinnacle coinciding with the gabled peak and breathtaking view of the Carson range.
In many ways, the earth acts as either the author or the inspiration for every space. At the base of the sloped site, a cavernous garage is nestled deep within the hillside. From it, a wide path of paved stone leads to the entry gallery and lounge. Ascent to the third level unfolds a quiet series of private and public spaces separated by board form concrete walls and flexible enough to be completely open to the mountain air. Evoking the memory of the client's 200-year-old mountain cabin, the blackened timber roof unifies the entire composition of concrete volumes and glass as it frames the views beyond. Ultimately, this is a residence designed to be worthy of the mountain on which it rests.

Create an impressive media wall with SEMBLANCE HOME THEATER. An open system can be created by using AV shelves to support a TV and components. For an enclosed system, the SEMBLANCE edition of the MIRAGE cabinet keeps components out of sight yet remote control accessible through coordinating micro-etched black glass doors. In both open or enclosed configurations, a SEMBLANCE home theater can accommodate TVs up to 65”. SEMBLANCE seamlessly integrates technology into the home while providing versatile space for storage and display.
For simplified ordering, BDI offers a menu of preconfigured SEMBLANCE HOME THEATER packages to suit a variety of applications. Components can be readjusted as often as necessary thanks to machine threaded inserts in the vertical panels (spaced in increments of 2.5”/64mm).

This beautiful rustic-inspired living room complete with a wood-burning fireplace showcases the Quarry Mill's Coventry natural thin stone veneer. Coventry is a dimensional ledgestone real thin veneer sawed to heights of 2”, 4”, and 6”. With the set heights, this stone is intended to be drystacked. Coventry has a unique production process that differs substantially from our other thin stone veneers. The stone is excavated from the ground in roughly 1” thick sheets. The stone sheets are then fed into a gang saw. The term gang saw comes from the saw’s multiple blades cutting in unison. The blades are spaced in 2”, 4”, and 6” increments. A 2’ by 2’ raw stone sheet will come out of the gang saw in clean and consistent 2”, 4”, and 6” strips. The gang saw is similar to the head saw used in lumber mills. The production of Coventry is similar to lumber production in that the head saw will create 2” strips of wood from a full tree.

We created an almost crystalline form that reflected the push and pull of the most important factors on the site: views directly to the NNW, an approach from the ESE, and of course, sun from direct south. To keep the size modest, we peeled away the excess spaces and scaled down any rooms that desired intimacy (the bedrooms) or did not require height (the pool room).
A deep but very thin overhang at the southern corner provides shade and drops a dramatic shadow mimicking the one seen at the entry porch. An incrementally tapering staircase carves a little more space away in the entry foyer and leads the eye to the main living area beyond. From the main living space, a ribbon of glass opens to the view down the hill and to the lake beyond. The exterior features locally milled tongue-and-groove cedar in two varying directions, with gaps not only at the verticals, but at the horizontal joints as well. This high-performance home needs just a single heat pump per floor and utilizes the gas stove only to take the edge off the coldest of nights, perhaps right after dip in the pool.

The front elevation of this house consists of the original 1910 farmhouse. The rest of the house had been augmented incrementally over time and the roofline beyond the original structure had become convoluted and the flanking elevations nonsensical. The current owners preserved the original 1910 farmhouse portion of the home and took the rest of the structure down to the foundation. A simple modern black barn was designed to run perpendicular with the old farmhouse structure and painted black in stark contrast to its old, white counterpart. Siding runs vertically on the new section as opposed to the horizontal shiplapped siding on the old. The new structure houses the kitchen with 12’ cathedral ceilings, a pantry / mudroom and a study.
The kitchen boasts a 1930’s island reclaimed from a commercial bakery and pendant lights from an old schoolhouse in Ohio as its nucleus, against a quiet backdrop of black stained oak cabinetry. Gently veined quartzite slabs serve as countertop, backsplash and wrap the stove hood to accentuate the ceiling height.
The interior design of this home is a carefully balanced alchemy of antiquity and modernity. It has an overriding monochromatic theme with layers of pattern and texture for depth. The color interest is derived from the lush outside landscape, with the exception of their daughter’s bedroom which is a tasteful symphony of pink, landed by a hand painted mural.
The theme of the home is framed around comfortable family living against curated backdrops of beloved collected items. The living room boasts no less than nineteen vintage crystal
