Located on an extraordinary hillside site above the San Fernando Valley, the Sherman Residence was designed to unite indoors and outdoors. The house is made up of as a series of board-formed concrete, wood and glass pavilions connected via intersticial gallery spaces that together define a central courtyard. From each room one can see the rich and varied landscape, which includes indigenous large oaks, sycamores, “working” plants such as orange and avocado trees, palms and succulents. A singular low-slung wood roof with deep overhangs shades and unifies the overall composition.

Phillip and Marianne wanted an outdoor space extended from their inside living area. They had a great view onto the veld from their property. We decided to extend that view with Flagstones between ornamental gravel and created a rustic gumpole pergola structure with a fire pit in the centre and benches constructed with Wooden railway sleepers. The rest of the garden we opened up to the veld planting up a forest of Indigenous trees and allowing the veld grass to grow into their existing lawn.
the result was a natural space extending the boundary of their inside space to the outside and giving them the feeling of living out into the veld.

One of the most prestigious projects we have supplied is the Martin House in Buffalo NY. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1904 it was the largest residential complex of his career and one of the most expensive.
Although the house had fallen in to disrepair and a number of the buildings demolished, the Darwin Martin House Corporation have over seen its re-birth and return to its former glory.
Northern became involved in 1994 and supplied tiles for the main house in 1996 and the Barton house a year later. Once the Pergola and Garage had been re-created we again supplied tiles, finishing out a 14 year involvement with the project. This is a true masterpiece of American design and heritage and you owe yourself a visit.

A former auto repair garage. Designed as a private aircraft destination Steakhouse restaurant in South Dakota. The restaurant plays homage to indigenous materials from South Dakota but with a twist. Cow Skulls, river rock from the foothills, homage to the Indians with the feather chandelier and no walls in the restaurant, just drapery which allows the floor plan to be adaptable depending on the occasion or event. The space lends itself to community dining, amongst the diners there is private aircraft owners and pilots. This town ‘s notorious history is being one of the most wild in the wild west.

Enveloped by the fine decor and comfortable luxury of your own home, you have everything the body needs. But sometimes your soul yearns for exotic travel and new experiences- whether on the Serengeti in Africa or the white sand beaches of the Pacific Rim, you miss your favorite destinations. With this exquisite Island-style poster bed, you can have both the cozy comfort of home and the alluring indigenous style of foreign lands. Rich, rosewood veneers in a Sumatra finish make up the body of the bed and its soaring, bamboo-carved posters. Bed displays oval finials with carved palm leaves and brass nailheads and accents for a touch of British Campaign style. Headboard and footboard are softly padded with Sawgrass fabric-an elegant linen weave in solid chestnut brown color. Choose full-length posters, or switch out the tall posters for a lower-profile option.

Nestled in Dallas, Texas, our remote design team based out of Washington, D.C. has transformed a backyard into a serene haven—all without stepping foot in the Lone Star State! With a newly constructed ADU, our client sought a seamless blend of Texan beauty and modern convenience. Through our remote design process, we curated a landscape featuring native Texan plants, a timeless flagstone patio, meandering walkways, and a personalized garden area.
Our selection of indigenous plants ensures year-round vibrancy with minimal upkeep. The rustic flagstone patio beckons relaxation under the Texan sun, while the custom garden area offers the joy of cultivating favorite herbs and blooms at home.
Despite the miles between us, our design ethos resonates with Texan tranquility. And while we may hail from D.C., we're all for fostering camaraderie—even with Dallas Cowboys fans!

"A gathering place and information center on the town's central waterfront both for arriving cruise ship passengers (nearly 1 million a year from May-September) and for community functions year-round. A key node on the phased development of the waterfront promenade, a continuous pedestrian walkway along the waters' edge through the town's center from the most northerly cruise ship berth to a small boat harbor and fishing jetty about a mile to the south. The simple, linear, permeable plan invites entry from all sides, waterfront and townfront. The space is sheltered by a single gable roof structure of exposed Alaska yellow cedar and decking. Vestibules and entries are accented by lower open timber gable roof forms. The pavilion extends north and south embracing exterior spaces with sculpture, planting, and sitting and eating terraces of recycled wood pier decking that was replaced with concrete and steel dock structure. Visitor services, information, tours, and town history and information with graphic, electronic media, and personal interaction are housed in the structure. Indigenous materials, historic scale and form reflect the context of the town and waterfront maintaining and enhancing view sheds with public art and amenities."
