This Wallingford project has multiple “fronts”, to Wallingford Avenue N, internally between the structures and to each side defining the woonerf for shared access. The true front of the project is the one internal to the site, defining a centrally located outdoor space that is terraced and sheltered with direct views to and from each of the eleven homes. Accessed between the structures, the courtyard space connects to the lower outdoor multi-use spaces of the woonerfs. In addition each home has private decks accessible from upper floor living spaces and on the roof. All exterior spaces are shaped through the expression of each home’s individuality within the larger project. Formal and material variation combined with strategic window placement create opportunities for contrast, view and privacy.

Renovated in the 1990s as a condominium development and later renovated again by a prior owner, the space did not meet the client’s needs. After looking at several options, it was decided the basic layout was correct but function was lost in the prior execution. The space was completely stripped to the studs and refitted with function in mind complete with custom cabinets. The living and kitchen spaces were designed as a harmonious collection crafted by a single millworker for continuity and detailed by Chris with individuality for definition and spatial clarity. A structural column once used to support a wall hung television was incorporated into the design with this element repeated in the living room mill work as it turns the corner down the hall. Further renovations to the apartment include three bathrooms, a laundry room, and a playroom at the lower level

Our trademarked Stay in Your Home program is different from what is offered anywhere else in the industry. Solid universal design is always on the forefront of our minds. We have project developers and designers that are Certified Aging in Place Specialists (CAPS). Our knowledgeable team strives to develop designs that are unique and well suited to multigenerational living.
We make homes safer by considering individual needs. Wider doorways, zero threshold shower enclosures, grab bars, shower seats, non-slip surfaces, elevators, stair chairs, wheel chair ramps and improved lighting are just a few things we do to make homes more accommodating. In every design, we understand that projects still have to be pretty—we make sure of that and have won national awards for this approach!
