Wooden Classicism
Nesbitt House – Seaside, Florida
Architect: Robert A. M. Stern
Builder: O.B. Laurent Construction
E. F. San Juan produced all of the interior and exterior millwork for this elegantly designed residence in the influential New Urban town of Seaside, Florida.
Challenges:
The beachfront residence required adherence to the area’s strict building code requirements, creating a unique profile for the compact layout of each room. Each room was also designed with all-wood walls and ceilings, which meant there was a lot of custom millwork!
Solution:
Unlike many homes where the same molding and paneling profiles are repeated throughout each room, this home featured a unique profile for each space. The effort was laborious—our team at E. F. San Juan created tools for each of these specific jobs. “The project required over four hundred man-hours of knife-grinding just to produce the tools,” says Edward San Juan. “Organization and scheduling were critical in this project because so many parts were required to complete each room.”
The long hours and hard work allowed us to take the compacted plan and create the feel of an open, airy American beach house with the influence of 1930s Swedish classicism. The ceiling and walls in each room are paneled, giving them an elongated look to open up the space. The enticing, simplified wooden classicism style seamlessly complements the sweeping vistas and surrounding natural beauty along the Gulf of Mexico.

This was a detailed exterior and interior restoration of an 1894 Victorian originally designed by influential architect and developer Joseph Leonard. Saikley Architects and Buestad Construction worked closely with the clients to uncover evidence of original exterior and interior details that had been removed and recreate them. Minor changes were made to the second story layout to add a bathroom for a master suite while staying true to the original feeling of the house.

2012: This Arts and Crafts style house draws from the most influential English architects of the early 20th century. Designed to be enjoyed by multiple families as a second home, this 4,900-sq-ft home contains three identical master suites, three bedrooms and six bathrooms. The bold stucco massing and steep roof pitches make a commanding presence, while flared roof lines and various detailed openings articulate the form. Inside, neutral colored walls accentuate richly stained woodwork. The timber trusses and the intersecting peak and arch ceiling open the living room to form a dynamic gathering space. Stained glass connects the kitchen and dining room. The open floor plan allows abundant light and views to the exterior, and also provides a sense of connection and functionality. A pair of matching staircases separates the two upper master suites, trimmed with custom balusters.

The most influential and successful chair of all time is the Greek klismos. Dating back to 6th century BC, this chair has stood the test of time. Athens – our 21st century interpretation – will do no less. Crafted in sold cast aluminum, the generously scaled outdoor seating features the iconic klismos backboard and vertical splat. The outswept tapered legs seem to flow from the back in one continuous curve, tapering elegantly as they reach the floor. All pieces are hand-rubbed with a gorgeous weathered-ivory finish.

The Inner Collection is the definition of timeless. Embracing the influential styles of European and American design from the start of the 20th century, details such as stitching that forms delicate patterns throughout the Inner Chair enriches the collection. The collection is made up of dining chairs that are constructed from a solid wood frame. A portfolio of modifications includes various colored saddle-leather upholsteries, as well as frame finishes. The frame of the Inner Chair is visible through the legs and corners of the backrest, producing a striking contrast against the saddle- leather upholstery. The Inner Collection Dining Chairs have a universal allure and can move from residential to commercial domains with ease. Manufactured By Bross.

This wooded, lakeside home plays an influential role in the homeowners artistic vision as a magical realist painter. By providing an environment that comes alive with the sights and sounds of nature, the artist is able to closely study as an explorer would by uncovering, recording, and rearranging the beauty of the natural world and the beauty of human beings.
This connection to nature comes from a horticultural interest manifested in the daily ritual of digging and pruning in her Connecticut garden. A daily ritual of physical immersion with the dirt and the worms of life contrasts with the otherworldly fantastical spaces the artist creates for her paintings. The paradoxical character of these two places imbues her paintings with an alluring mystery.

Wallpaper by J&V Italian Design. Available at NewWall.com | The J&V 501 Collection reinterprets some of today’s most influential design trends. Etnico and EtnicoAfro transport you to a continent rich with handcrafted textures and weaves, realized in gold, jewel tones and deep overlaid ebonies. Dragone takes you to Asia, where one exotic design is rendered in Ming-Dynasty red, pearlized white and tarnished bronze. Damsco and Ornamenta are bold reinterpretations of the current obsession for classical British prints, but using velvet textures, metallic touches and graphic colourways.
