Wooden Classicism
Nesbitt House – Seaside, Florida
Architect: Robert A. M. Stern
Builder: O.B. Laurent Construction
E. F. San Juan produced all of the interior and exterior millwork for this elegantly designed residence in the influential New Urban town of Seaside, Florida.
Challenges:
The beachfront residence required adherence to the area’s strict building code requirements, creating a unique profile for the compact layout of each room. Each room was also designed with all-wood walls and ceilings, which meant there was a lot of custom millwork!
Solution:
Unlike many homes where the same molding and paneling profiles are repeated throughout each room, this home featured a unique profile for each space. The effort was laborious—our team at E. F. San Juan created tools for each of these specific jobs. “The project required over four hundred man-hours of knife-grinding just to produce the tools,” says Edward San Juan. “Organization and scheduling were critical in this project because so many parts were required to complete each room.”
The long hours and hard work allowed us to take the compacted plan and create the feel of an open, airy American beach house with the influence of 1930s Swedish classicism. The ceiling and walls in each room are paneled, giving them an elongated look to open up the space. The enticing, simplified wooden classicism style seamlessly complements the sweeping vistas and surrounding natural beauty along the Gulf of Mexico.

Magnolia is inspired by the influential Moderne and Streamlined movement in Colonial Revival architecture that was being practiced in Los Angeles in the late 1920s and 1930s by such architects as Paul Williams and James Dolena and their counterparts further east, including David Adler in Chicago and John Staub in Texas. The house is built around a center hall plan, where the two-story stair hall works as a skylit atrium to bring light deep into the interior. The formal and family rooms are organized around this central feature. The exterior is sheathed in white-painted brick with accents of simplified classical columns and moldings in keeping with streamlined influences.

The most influential and successful chair of all time is the Greek klismos. Dating back to 6th century BC, this chair has stood the test of time. Athens – our 21st century interpretation – will do no less. Crafted in sold cast aluminum, the generously scaled outdoor seating features the iconic klismos backboard and vertical splat. The outswept tapered legs seem to flow from the back in one continuous curve, tapering elegantly as they reach the floor. All pieces are hand-rubbed with a gorgeous weathered-ivory finish.

This was a detailed exterior and interior restoration of an 1894 Victorian originally designed by influential architect and developer Joseph Leonard. Saikley Architects and Buestad Construction worked closely with the clients to uncover evidence of original exterior and interior details that had been removed and recreate them. Minor changes were made to the second story layout to add a bathroom for a master suite while staying true to the original feeling of the house.
