The large multi-function kitchen is the centre of daily life in the home. We've used two banks of full-height cabinetry to conceal a host of complex infrastructure and storage areas, so that what's visible is distilled down to three simple elements - two perimeter cabinets and an island. The back wall of the kitchen separates the front foyer from the private spaces in the home. The dining room is located just beyond, within easy access of the butler's pantry that's concealed behind the cabinet unit visible on the left of this photo.

During the kitchen demolition, our lead carpenter discovered that the original floor framing was rotted, and the infrastructure of the house was deteriorating. In order to remedy this situation and reinforce the foundation of the house, the entire floor framing was removed, and the floor was re-framed with 3 new beams for support.

MKC audio video will take on special projects outside Michigan and this is one example. This is the plantation house with all historic furnishings. Yes we added a hidden WiFI network to this building as well. Two hunting lodges on the Upper Brandon Plantation in Virginia needed complete wiring and network installation for pervasive WiFi. Once we had a new network infrastructure, we added whole house music, custom TV installation, including a custom build TV lift cabinet designed to match the existing oak paneling and trim.

This particular project actually came about in two phases. The client came to us wanting to qualify for the City of Portland's Audubon Society "Backyard Habitate Certification". Our first infrastructure of paths was crushed gravel with steel edging. Permeability was a requirement for certification... but after a year of being in the ground, the owners wanted another level of finish... and opted to add Iron Mountain Flagstone Steppers with a 1" gap, which still met the parameters of certification. Virginia AIA Merit Award for Excellence in Residential Design | What appeared to be a simple, worn-out, early 20th century stucco cottage was to be modestly renovated as a weekend retreat. But when the contractor and architects began pulling away the interior wall finishes, they discovered a log cabin at its core (believed to date as far back as the 1780’s) and a newer addition (circa 1920’s) at the rear where the site slopes down. Initial plans were scrapped, and a new project was born that honors the original construction while accommodating new infrastructure and the clients’ modern tastes.
