A tired and dated, poorly layed out kitchen gets a bright and fresh new look in in the NW community of Arbour Lake in Calgary.
The corner pantry made way for plenty of storage and counter space and the former dining nook now houses a coffee bar. There’s no need for a separate table because the island has ample space to seat four people comfortably as well as houses extra storage for those infrequently used items. The floating wood shelves don’t just look amazing, they are great for easy access to your most used items. The hexagon tile back splash is installed to highlight the shelves and stainless hood and make a very graphic statement.

Mesh inset cabinet doors create a light and airy feel while a custom island adds industrial heft to this vintage kitchen update. Oversized subway tile creates a clean graphic backdrop. Photos by Photo Art Portraits

This lower level space started off as a storage space for inherited household furniture and miscellaneous infrequently used items. Pierre Jean-Baptiste Interiors reimagined the space as it now exists using some of our clients few requirements including a stage for the family comedians at the rear of the lower level, a movie screening area, a serving table for frequent soiree’s, and cozy resilient furnishings. We infused style into this lower level changing the paint colors, adding new carpet to absorb sound and provide style. We also were sure to include color in the space strategically. The new walkway connects the front door to the sidewalk and to the new paver driveway. The brick edging matches the burgundy shutters of the house. We hand picked palettes of Connecticut Bluestone with lots of burgundy colors in it to give the walkway 'pizazz' as the client requested and to coordinate with the house colors. The plants were just planted but will soon fill the yard with low maintenance, lush evergreen shrubs & grasses that are watered infrequently by drip irrigation rings. Red and purple flowering perennials will pop amidst the different shades of green. The gradual decline of the walkway from the front door provides easy wheelchair access instead of the old steps.

Incorporating an open shelf system creates extensive sightlines. Sightlines decrease the amount of time spent on choosing outfits because you can clearly see everything you have and dress accordingly. A valet rod helps you visualize your outfit before making the final decision. This closet is organization-oriented by design.

One area of the kitchen that made it look outdated and traditional was a desk area (left back f the kitchen) that was used very infrequently. The suggestion was made to remove the desk area all together and put in a full cabinet for extra storage. The idea of removing this desk did not get a good reception at first but once the client decided to take a leap of faith, she plunged into the idea of having more storage and no useless desk area. My custom cabinet maker designed this cabinet to match the current cabinets and did it flawlessly!
