Towering over the beach district of Downtown Vancouver, this three-bedroom penthouse felt dark and awkward as it had not been updated in over 20 years, leaving a complete rebuild as the only logical way forward. The clients are hoping to welcome a child in the years to come, however they love to entertain so also wanted a modern and sophisticated space. Therefore, the task became marrying functional indestructibility with clean, elevated design, resulting in a timeless, architecturally forward home with sensible storage and innovated finishes. Creatively, I was inspired by the idea of injecting dimension, by way of juxtaposing materials that wouldn’t necessarily be found together in nature, yet worked harmonious when combined. As such the use of metal, wood, stone and textiles are a cohesive vein running throughout the home.

In this design, a picture window with a cozy window seat takes center stage. The choice of a picture window was intentional, aiming to draw attention to the captivating garden and create a standout feature. To inject color, playfulness, and texture into the otherwise minimal space, vibrant cushions were added to the window seat. This combination enhances the overall aesthetic and adds a touch of personality to the area.

Custom designed CNC work that replicated the cement tiles in the foyer - this is that extra embellishment that takes your home from "its nice" to "wow"... I also pushed the boundaries by injecting modern lighting paired with more cottage lighting throughout the house. The interaction is simply spectacular and creates that much needed tension that truly invigorates!

Rustic yet refined, this modern country retreat blends old and new in masterful ways, creating a fresh yet timeless experience. The structured, austere exterior gives way to an inviting interior. The palette of subdued greens, sunny yellows, and watery blues draws inspiration from nature. Whether in the upholstery or on the walls, trailing blooms lend a note of softness throughout. The dark teal kitchen receives an injection of light from a thoughtfully-appointed skylight; a dining room with vaulted ceilings and bead board walls add a rustic feel. The wall treatment continues through the main floor to the living room, highlighted by a large and inviting limestone fireplace that gives the relaxed room a note of grandeur. Turquoise subway tiles elevate the laundry room from utilitarian to charming. Flanked by large windows, the home is abound with natural vistas. Antlers, antique framed mirrors and plaid trim accentuates the high ceilings. Hand scraped wood flooring from Schotten & Hansen line the wide corridors and provide the ideal space for lounging.

coffer ceiling coordinates with patterned floor. this space was retrofitted with state of the art filtration so that cigars can be smoked and not leave a smell on the furnishings. wallpaper was faux painted on lower wainscot, upper wall is color injected plaster. The exterior of what looks like a vernacular Hamptons shingle cottage, designed by architect Blaze Makoid, is intentionally deceiving. For the interiors, Axis Mundi typically decided not to play by the rules. Instead of de rigeur nautical artifacts, floppy sofas and wicker furniture, the firm responded to Makoid’s all-white interior envelope by injecting rooms with comfortable modern elegance that’s more contemporary Cap Ferrat than Eastern Long Island. Clean furniture silhouettes—from Cassina, Poltrona Frau and B&B Italia—a Massimo Vitali beach scene, a Moooi chandelier and industrial finishes (such as the steel of the fireplace surround and the anodized aluminum of a sleek Bulthaup kitchen) spark a creative tension between indoors and out. The gray palette provides a quiet backdrop for the nature outside, except for the master suite, where custom oak panels and blue shades create a reassuring warmth conducive to sleep. The Bibliotheque Nationale (meaning national library in French) combines lighting and a micro-library, with handy little shelves to display books, magazines, tablets, etc. A USB station is incorporated in the base, to provide a convenient charging point for a smartphone or tablet. The base, rod stand and diffuser stand are in chrome-plated die-cast zinc. The external diffusers are available in matching PVC fabric, injection die-stamped methacrylate with clear or smoke-grey finish, or in silver or bronze on the inner surface, by vacuum aluminum coating.
