Updated Spec Home: Foyer and Great Room In our last post, we introduced you to my mom and sister’s Updated Spec Home; the Foyer and Great Room will be featured in this post. Foyer As you enter their home, to the right is a hall closet and a french door which leads to the Basement. To the left is a long wall which was perfect for an extra long console table in a rustic finish that served as a sofa table in their previous home. I love repositioning furniture, and by using this table in the entry, it makes it feel new. Additionally, we placed a vibrant piece of art previously used in my sister’s Bedroom above the table. This piece not only sets the tone for our color palette, it also makes the kind of statement you want in your Foyer – Wow! We added accessories and an unique lamp to complete the space. Great Room In the Great Room which is open to the Foyer, we installed our inspiration artwork in the place of honor over the mantel. Since the piece was vertical, it did not take up enough space. I do not like a “fussy” mantel with lots of accessories so we found these two vases in a silver leaf finish. They were perfect because they were large enough, but not too deep. Accessorizing mantels can be tricky because the majority of them are not deep. We went to Jan’s Floral Design to add vibrant color and interesting textures to the vases. The original mantel was too small and uninspired. Therefore, we had our contractor Brad Anderson built a new one based on a photo of a mantel we liked. The new mantel has lots of great detail and is the appropriate proportion for the fireplace. We replaced beige 12×12 ceramic tiles with gorgeous large pieces of smoked carrara marble for a striking fireplace surround. Check out this other mantel that we updated. For furniture, we purchased a shorter sofa in a gray tweed fabric. Typically, two throw pillows come with a sofa.We added a fun fringe to the pillows that came with the sofa. I recommend ordering pillows that match your sofa fabric and layering with custom pillows that support your color palette. We added a patterned custom pillow and a striped throw. Next, we got a small scale recliner in a yummy gray leather for my mom and a chair and ottoman in a small scale mint and gray geometric pattern for my sister. We added an accent chair in a fun small scale stripe to fill a corner and add additional seating – which is always a good thing. Remember that this was a Spec Home so there were no built-ins. As a result, we needed a media cabinet for the television and some bookcases to display my mom’s decorative box collection and my sister’s collection of blown colored glass. This set from Ballard Designs fit the bill perfectly. The back is open and airy with nice detail. The wood finish also adds a richness to the space. My mom needed a space for her computer, and this small writing desk fit the space perfectly. Finally, for finishing touches, we added a patterned rug, cornice boards in a mint leaf fabric, and great lamps for ambient lighting. These two rooms are stunning, vibrant and livable. Inspiration for a coastal porch remodel in Miami

Jennifer Hazen from Reico Kitchen and Bath in Charlottesville, VA, designed a transitional-inspired kitchen featuring Masterpiece cabinetry. The kitchen’s perimeter cabinets feature the Ganon full overlay door style in a Cottage finish, while the kitchen island is an Evergreen finish. The perimeter and coffee bar area feature countertops and full height backsplash in Hilite Venatino Gold quartz, while the island countertop features Taj Mahal Quartzite with a 3-inch mitered apron. The kitchen also features KitchenAid and Frigidaire appliances. Jennifer shared insights into the project, highlighting its unique aspects: “The clients wanted to stick with a style that would endure over time while still standing out as classy. The challenge of 8’ ceilings was addressed with an oversized custom hood, carefully constructed together like a puzzle for the installer. The island countertop features a 3-inch mitered apron, creating the appearance of a double-thick slab of Taj Mahal Quartzite. Even the dog has his own quartz top at his feeding station! The bathroom also features Tolani Maple Kona cabinetry. The kitchen includes an Imagery Glass Mosaic 3x6 in Rain material Glass GM07412 tile backsplash. “We walked into Reico without an appointment, because 2 friends highly recommended them. We were warmly greeted by Cat, even without an appointment,” said the client. “Cat listened, and then pulled out samples as she guided us patiently through the process. She brought to our attention a cabinet larger than the actual area in our plan. We were able to adjust before it was ordered. Her guidance, suggestions and attention to our likes and dislikes proved to be invaluable.” “This project was remodeling a basement to add to a multi-generation home with an eye on creating a space to enjoy,” said Cat. “I hit it off with the client right away, meeting prior to selecting a contractor which changed the dynamic of our roles for the duration of the project.” The client added, “One of the best services Reico provided was computer generated visuals. It helped us see what the overall look would be. The kitchen and bathroom are beyond our expectations. We love the look and the flow!” “We changed the wall cabinet color as the space started to come together with all of the supporting selections made,” said Cat. “The Aged Picket Fence painted finish with its artisan random distressing contrasts the contemporary base cabinets and glass tile in the best way. Kristen Campbell of Reico Kitchen & Bath in Williamsburg, VA, created a breathtaking transitional style inspired kitchen design that features a diverse range of Merillat Masterpiece Cabinetry door styles and finishes. The base perimeter cabinets boast the Rockwell door style with Sherwin Williams Meadow Sage custom paint finish, while the wall and tall cabinets feature the Canvas finish. The kitchen island is designed with the Cimmaron door style in Rustic Alder Husk Finish. The kitchen also features Calacatta Miraggio Gold quartz countertops and KitchenAid appliances. According to Kristen, “the client had a clear vision of what they wanted for the remodel but were open to exploring a variety of options in both design and materials. The large kitchen space warmed up with a mix of colors and textures. The entire process…from initial meeting to punch went incredibly smooth. The space has been organized to create a progressive journey from the upper wash area, to the lower tub space. The heated stairs, tub slab and green sea tile that wraps around the entire room was inspired by the progressive immersion of the Turkish baths.

Designed by Cat Neitzey of Reico Kitchen & Bath in Fredericksburg VA in collaboration with Craig Schafer of ACS Contracting, this kitchen sunroom design features Merillat Classic Tolani cabinets with a Cotton finish on the perimeter and Boardwalk finish on the kitchen island. The kitchen also features a perimeter countertop and full height backsplash in Spectrum Sterling quartz with Caesarstone Turbine on the island and a Kohler Whitehaven Hayridge Farmhouse Cast Iron kitchen sink. “I really enjoyed doing my research to help the client bring their vision to life. They were so open to ideas and my suggestions. The design inspiration was pulled from the client’s love of McGee & Co.'s elegant simplicity and eye for organization detail. I used my favorite floor tile, Grespania Trivoli Blanco, which was so perfect with the Boardwalk maple island. We do not often get to drill into so much detail with cabinet inserts and the functionality of every inch the way this homeowner wanted to. I learned so much from their input,” said Cat. “The choice of the Kohler Whitehaven Hayridge sink is an amazing modern touch. We installed a drip ledge detail below the sink that adds another layer to this focal point. Our biggest challenge was envisioning a new island where a previous peninsula and knee wall were.” “Cat was thorough with timelines and updates,” said the client. “She put us first and what was best for our plan. The kitchen renovation moved quickly and Cat would make spontaneous visits to monitor the project. Cat was definitely a key player and we could not have had a smoother renovation without her!” “Our favorite part of the new kitchen is the island. We choose a different color for the cabinets and countertop. She encouraged working with different colors and elements throughout. Our favorite accessory is the pull out pantry shelves. Fu-Tung Cheng, CHENG Design • Exterior Shot of Cheng Concrete Wall of Tiburon House Tiburon House is Cheng Design's eighth custom home project. The topography of the site for Bluff House was a rift cut into the hillside, which inspired the design concept of an ascent up a narrow canyon path. Two main wings comprise a “T” floor plan; the first includes a two-story family living wing with office, children’s rooms and baths, and Master bedroom suite. The second wing features the living room, media room, kitchen and dining space that open to a rewarding 180-degree panorama of the San Francisco Bay, the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, and Belvedere Island. Part of a complete home renovation in an aging Mid-Century Bow Mar home, this expansive kitchen is visually and physically the home's centerpiece. I used two large seating areas attached to opposing half-circle islands to create a functional and comfortable family space, as well as house a microwave drawer and induction cooktop. The high-gloss white wall cabinetry, paired with oak base cabinetry is Bauformat, German designed and manufactured. The subtle contrast between the flooring and base cabinetry, paired with Mid Century inspired matte-white large-format wall tile keeps the whole space light and airy.
