The existing kitchen was actually tiny and poorly laid out. The solution was to completely remove the wall separating the kitchen from the dining room. Even though we actually have more things in the kitchen - such as the full-size wine frig - the feeling is still expansive. In this instance, the homeowners were open to a creative blend of light gray, modern wood, and dark blue cabinets. Almost totally white quartz countertops rounded out the look.

Within the upper level beneath the gable roof, which had the peak clipped off in a former attic to accommodate lateral structural ties, we restructured the ridge to create the crisp peaked ceiling of the gable roof spanning the house lengthwise, front to back. This linear space frames views to the north toward downtown San Francisco. On either side of this space are instances of borrowed views and daylight from twin pairs of skylights that flank the gable.

Some kitchens may be small, but they don't have to be small on design! For instance, the green glass backsplash in this kitchen speaks volumes about the style of the owner!

The counter tops are typhoon bordeaux. The flooring is Pasadena Maple (California Classics). One of my goals was to clear all of the counter tops of clutter by defining more functional space. There are banks of drawers on both sides of the center island, for instance so we can store reading materials, prescriptions, vitamins, etc.

My client has been gardening for years. She asked me to help her fill in areas that were empty or skimpy. Much of her landscaping is perennials so my goal was to add structure through shrubs in areas that were mostly perennials. The shrubs compliment the perennials and provide winter interest. Some areas were empty but anchored by shrubs. In that instance I added perennials that were consistent with her colors, including repeating some already on site, and did well in the shade. We were able to divide some of her perennials on site to reduce the number of new plants that were needed.

Open shelves, cornices, top boards and the gently rounded edges discreetly emphasise the country cottage character of our rondo kitchen. Small playful details such as solid wood cookery book holders and niche elements complete the charming appearance of the rondo kitchen. The emphasis here is placed on manageability and functionality. For instance, there is a top cabinet with generous storage space for kitchen tools and other utensils concealed behind a practical roll door.

Creating an entry that feels welcoming and expansive can sometimes be a challenge. In this instance, double entry doors made of a wood frame with glass panes allows light to flood the entry foyer. The natural light brightens and balances the visually heavier stone and wood finishes. A special plaster treatment on the walls and ceiling adds depth and interest to space. Mark Haddad and Kurt Hakansson recently designed this modern living room in Boston's South End. To create the unique floating wall unit, HH specified a Pennville custom cabinet with a 3/4" panel expansion to create the unique top. The piece was finished in a high gloss lacquer to match Benjamin Moore Smoke Embers 1466. The vertical dividers are fixed and the three horizontal shelves are adjustable. As you can see, it would fit A/V components nicely (but in this instance, those were hidden and the clients elected instead to use it to display their beautiful pottery and art glass).

This 80's style Mediterranean Revival house was modernized to fit the needs of a bustling family. The home was updated from a choppy and enclosed layout to an open concept, creating connectivity for the whole family. The chance to build a lakeside weekend home in rural NC provided this Chapel Hill family with an opportunity to ditch convention and think outside the box. For instance, we traded the traditional boat dock with what's become known as the "party dock"… a floating lounge of sorts, complete with wet bar, TV, swimmer's platform, and plenty of spots for watching the water fun. Inside, we turned one bedroom into a gym with climbing wall - and dropped the idea of a dining room, in favor of a deep upholstered niche and shuffleboard table. Outdoor drapery helped blur the lines between indoor spaces and exterior porches filled with upholstery, swings, and places for lazy napping. And after the sun goes down....smores, anyone?
