Old fixer-uppers often require two competing levels of priorities from their new homeowners. First and foremost is the need to immediately attend to those repairs that ensure the continued functioning and general well being of the house’s structure. By nature, these usually demand “house on fire!” status, especially when compared to other types of remodeling work that simply enhances aesthetics and general comfort. In the case of a Delaware couple, a structural issue with the front of their 125 year old Victorian (it was sinking!), along with some other more pressing challenges, put a 13 year long hold on getting the bathroom for which they had long dreamed. By the time Dave Fox Design Build Remodelers was hired to handle the construction, the couple certainly had put plenty of thought into converting a spare second-floor bedroom into the master bath. Courtney Burnett, Fox’s Interior Design Manager on the project, credits the owners for “having great creative minds, with lots of ideas to contribute.” By the time it came to put a formal design plan into place, the client “drove the look while we devised how the space would function.” It’s worth noting that there are drawbacks in being given too much time for advance planning. Owners’ tastes in design may change, while a steady stream of new fixtures and building products always demand consideration up to the last minute. “We had been collecting ideas for a while…pictures of what we liked, but as it turned out, when it came time to select fixtures, tile, etc., we used little from those pictures,” the owners admit. The finished bath exudes an art deco spirit that isn’t true to the home’s Victorian origins, which Burnett attributes to being more of a reflection of the homeowners’ preferences than the actual era of the structure. Despite that incongruity, everyone feels that they have remained true to the house by selecting vintage style elements, including subway tiles for the walls, hexagonal tile for the floors, and a pedestal sink that served as the focal point for the entire room. But as with all dreams, once one is achieved, a new one soon beckons. With the bathroom’s strikingly beautiful turquoise paint barely dry, the completion of that long-awaited project has served to kick-start plans for finishing off the remainder of the Victorian’s second floor.

He commissioned architect Matthew Stratton, interior designer Jennifer Corredor, builder Denis Savoie and landscape architect Craig Reynolds to create his dream home. The plan: to set the stage for his proposal to then girlfriend, Judy, and embark on a new phase of his life. Embracing a modern take on the Key West style famed for its pastel-hued, conch-style houses and laid-back attitude, Corredor designed a simple, elegant and unpretentious interior scheme for this 3,900-square-foot home. A tropical sensation flows freely with natural materials and a color palette that reflect the island’s backdrop of sandy beaches, brilliant skies and cresting ocean waves. Polished white-glass tile flooring downstairs contrasts with African teak wood flooring upstairs, while cherry wood paneling and custom wall treatments create texture. To the breezy blue and white theme throughout, the designer added a zest of coral, inspired by the Royal Poinciana tree that frames the arbor by the pool. “The whole idea with ocean hues and wood tones is to emulate the surroundings,” Corredor says. “I think these elements add character to a space, as well as warmth.” The great room reflects Corredor’s light airy approach. In the living area, accent pillows with a coral-print fabric and an “Axiom Glass Thorn” coral-hued bowl, both from Coconut Grove Gallery, add a dash of color as well as organic curves that augment the lines of the sofa and contrast with the angular glass tables. An ode to the home’s Key West atmosphere, Flower In Movement, a painting by artist Martha Dominguez, combines a floral motif with a wavy dimension that echoes the gardens as well as the ocean. “The architect used a NanaWall, which is a special feature,” Corredor says. “It can be pulled all the way back, entirely open, to create a seamless feel that the room carries on from inside to outside.” “SET AMIDST LUSH BOTANICAL GARDENS, THE HOUSE HAS A BEACHY, SPA-LIKE ATMOSPHERE THAT MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE FLOATING,” INTERIOR DESIGNER JENNIFER CORREDOR SAYS. Having successfully designed the then bachelor’s penthouse residence at the Waldorf Astoria, Kadlec Architecture + Design was retained to combine 2 units into a full floor residence in the historic Palmolive building in Chicago. The couple was recently married and have five older kids between them all in their 20s. She has 2 girls and he has 3 boys (Think Brady bunch). Nate Berkus and Associates was the interior design firm, who is based in Chicago as well, so it was a fun collaborative process. Details: -Brass inlay in natural oak herringbone floors running the length of the hallway, which joins in the rotunda. -Bronze metal and glass doors bring natural light into the interior of the residence and main hallway as well as highlight dramatic city and lake views. -Billiards room is paneled in walnut with navy suede walls. his timeless home was built in 1909 in Seattle’s Capitol Hill historic district. The house features gorgeous architectural details from the turn of the century including sculpted moldings, custom wood cutouts, and hand-made tiles. The kitchen was previously remodeled in a style that departed from the home’s historic period. Each room was thoughtfully curated to ensure aesthetic beauty inspired by the home’s original style. We renovated the kitchen, powder room, and restored the butler’s pantry with period details. Generous casement windows were added in the kitchen that flood the room with sunlight. The kitchen design needed to be functional for a family of eight, so we paid great attention to appliance placement, storage, and flow. The furniture and light fixtures selected throughout the home are simple and elegant, allowing the detailed architectural features to shine.
