2018 HNA Awards Honorable Mention - Concrete Paver - Residential (size less than 3,000 sf)
Contractor: The Sharper Edge Landscaping
Producer: County Materials Corporation
Designer: Paul Bowker
Four different styles of pavers and creative color combinations were used in this residential patio to separate areas and to create a distinctive feel for each space. A combination of modular shaped pavers and paving stones that simulate flagstone aesthetics were combined, creating a unique presentation.
With varying features incorporated throughout the space, fitting each unit into place was a challenge only overcome with precise planning and execution: bullnose pavers were cut to fit the seat wall, fireplace and stair corners, while the flagstone style pavers were cut to fit the square parameters of their area.
Retaining wall units were used to create several functional features and add elevation. Situated against the house, a raised patio with an outdoor kitchen was built with retaining wall units. The same units were used to build stairs leading up to this area, a fireplace and a seating area.
Bullnose pavers were used multiple ways to add functional value and aesthetic appeal. The seat wall near the fireplace is capped with rounded bullnose pavers for guest comfort. They form stair step treads for clear visibility and sure footing, and they form a creative accent course in the large wall.
This patio maximized available space to offer everything the homeowners desired for their outdoor living area: a place to relax, cook, enjoy a fire and unwind in a hot tub. The exceptional colors and styles of pavers adds to the character, and the excellent craftsmanship makes this a special retreat.

This low maintenance, clean, and modern landscape accents this beautifully restored craftsman home. Terrain worked with the Landscape Architect to install a custom made bluestone entry, paired with polished Mexican pebbles. Steel edging defines the landscape border materials. The simplistic wood and metal screen frames this front yard terrace.

Not all beauty comes from symmetry. Some of the most timeless designs emerge from organic movement, irregular shapes, and subtle playfulness. That is the artistry behind Techo-Bloc’s Antika™ paver.
Antika™ is a permeable, cobble-style paver crafted to mimic natural stone in its most whimsical form. Its rounded edges, varying shapes, and interlocking design bring softness and flow to driveways, walkways, or patios that deserve something unique. Available in multiple blended color options, it complements both rustic and contemporary homes with elegance and ease.
Imagine pulling into your driveway at dusk, the shadows dancing on each stone, feeling less like a surface and more like a passage to something special. Antika™ does not just pave a way; it sets a tone of calm, warmth, and grounded sophistication.
Choosing Antika™ means choosing water permeability, durability, and an aesthetic that resists the rigid and celebrates the natural. It is a driveway that breathes with the earth and invites design to be both functional and freeing.
Let’s explore how this material can bring your outdoor story to life.

This is a close up photo of the eco-paver driveway. The pavers are laid on a properly installed, compacted base. Then 3/8" gravel is swept into the joints. Water then is able to flow into the subgrade, rather than end up in the storm drains. Design and Photograph by Patrick Murphy

HNA Hardscape Project Award Winner
A Slice of Paradise
Strongsville, Ohio
Rock Bottom Lawn & Landscaping
With a resort-like feel, this project incorporates many entertainment features. The homeowner requested an area for hosting large parties without feeling crowded. The separate design elements allow for more intimate gatherings within the overall project. These elements include a partially covered outdoor kitchen/bar, large dining area, covered pavilion and fireplace patio, in-ground swimming pool with accompanying pool deck, and a raised gas fire pit patio bordered by a curved seat wall. The theme of contrast runs throughout the project while unifying each of the features. Light and dark, smooth and textured, linear and sinuous play off each other adding interest and bringing attention to the materials used. The large pavers were chosen to fit the grand scale and style of the project, additionally creating a smooth surface along the pool deck, all while having a minimal joint between pavers. Textured dark grey and brown pavers provide accents and borders throughout the site. Seven feet of elevation change from the threshold of the house to the back side of the pool wall had to be taken into account. Retaining walls and the placement of patios limit the amount of stairs between areas, as requested by the homeowner, while still creating vertical interest in key places such as the fire pit patio. Non-concrete elements such as the palm trees, wooden pergolas and columns combine with the hardscaping to create a truly unique and relaxing slice of paradise.
