Joe and Denise purchased a large Tudor style home that never truly fit their needs. While interviewing contractors to replace the roof and stucco on their home, it prompted them to consider a complete remodel. With two young daughters and pets in the home, our clients were convinced they needed an open concept to entertain and enjoy family and friends together. The couple also desired a blend of traditional and contemporary styles with sophisticated finishes for the project. JRP embarked on a new floor plan design for both stories of the home. The top floor would include a complete rearrangement of the master suite allowing for separate vanities, spacious master shower, soaking tub, and bigger walk-in closet. On the main floor, walls separating the kitchen and formal dining room would come down. Steel beams and new SQFT was added to open the spaces up to one another. Central to the open-concept layout is a breathtaking great room with an expansive 6-panel bi-folding door creating a seamless view to the gorgeous hills. It became an entirely new space with structural changes, additional living space, and all-new finishes, inside and out to embody our clients’ dream home. Having been referred to San Luis Kitchen by the mother of a co-worker, this month’s homeowners came to our showroom with high hopes. Tried and true do-it-yourselfers, the couple had already knocked out a wall to create a pass-thru between their kitchen and living room. However life intervened and they were stalled with raw drywall and partially demolished cabinets. Hence, the recognition of need for professional remodeling help! An initial interview with San Luis Kitchen’s design team revealed a few things that had to change. First, this busy professional couple had been living for years without a dishwasher! “NO more!” exclaimed the wife. Secondly, there was a marked lack of convenient workspace in this small kitchen. The workable counter space was limited to one corner of the room between the sink and the range – the microwave was filling the counter to the left of the sink and there was no counter at all to the right of the range. To add insult to injury, a room divider that had a nice large top was basically unusable – it was in an awkward location for prep work (facing the dining room with your back to the kitchen), had an old wood counter that was aesthetically appealing but impractical for food prep, and just ended up covered in clutter. Thirdly, the work area of the kitchen was blah, boring and uninspiring – when standing at the sink you stared at a blank wall and the range faced the unfinished drywall from the stalled remodel – not a place to spend quality time! There were some interesting plus points to the existing space that could be capitalized upon. The homeowner absolutely loved her range – a freestanding 30” unit with double stacked ovens. She definitely wanted to reuse it. Another plus was the placement of the refrigerator. It was recessed into a niche built into the connecting garage. This allowed the spacious deep refrigerator to remain unimposing in the kitchen – it wasn’t sticking out in the space the way fridges often are! And now to the redesign and the new kitchen. We decided to remove the center room divider and integrate the kitchen with the dining area. We gave the homeowners lots of storage space by designing a dining area hutch that has four tall pantry cabinets in addition to a display area and two banks of nice deep drawers. We kept the refrigerator recessed into the garage (pulling it forward a bit to align with the hutch) and added a decorative open shelf above it. Next, we moved the new farmhouse style stainless sink to face the living area pass-thru (the designated clean-up person can now interact with guests who are relaxing after dinner) and added a small dishwasher to the left of the sink and a double pull-out trash cabinet to the right of it – all the essentials for clean-up – and counter space to boot! We also tucked a narrow tray storage cabinet into the corner next to the dishwasher. The range now centers on the end wall of the kitchen with a microwave hood and cabinetry detail above creating a focal point for the kitchen. On either side of the range are swing-out shelves to access the base corners – space was tight here, we custom sized the cabinets and squeezed them in. A bank of four drawers is located under the window extending the counter around the corner so that the homeowners now have food prep space both left and right of the range. In the upper cabinets to the left of the microwave we installed a swing-out spice pantry for organized storage and easy access to essential items. Their Kitchenaid mixer lives on the counter here with adjustable shelf storage above it – this corner has become a bake center. And there is now a designated coffee space in the other corner featuring a diagonal wall corner cabinet and decorative corner mug shelf. In conclusion, San Luis Kitchen and these intrepid homeowners took an old boring white kitchen and transformed it into a whole new room. Now the kitchen complements the up-beat and energetic lifestyle of its users.

"Kerry completely remodeled my kitchen. He demoed old cabinets and plumbing, knocked out a wall, took out some drywall. He redid all the kitchen electrical and plumbing. New wood cabinets, granite countertops, stone tile backsplash, sink and faucet. Installed 3 new ceiling fans. He ran home theater wiring inside the wall and attic so it would be hidden. I supplied certain fixtures and appliances, and I separately arranged for new flooring, painting, and carpeting for the rest of the house. Total project cost, including TaylorPro's part and everything else, was about $57,000. I was delighted with Kerry and his crew. They did a high quality job, and kept me informed at all times. Among the four excellent contractors we interviewed, Kerry struck me as highly experienced and confident he would complete the job on time. The work was estimated at 4 weeks; it turned out to take 5 weeks, mainly because the countertop fabricator took longer than expected. We have shown off the new kitchen to many friends, neighbors, and Facebook friends. They are stunned, it's just sooo beautiful! I get up every morning, turn on the new under cabinet lights, pour my coffee, and smile at the look of the granite. I had a special request for an island countertop that would slide back and forth. With 350 pounds of granite this is not an easy request. Kerry designed it and built it. At our unveiling we had old ladies moving it back and forth with one finger, yet it locks in place easily. A major kitchen remodel is an ordeal. You go 3 or 4 weeks with no sink or dishwasher. There's dust everywhere, even with the plastic wall they put up to keep it out. Washing dishes in the bathtub is no fun. But we designated a spare room as a temporary kitchen, and Kerry moved the fridge and microwave in there for us. We had the outdoor grill, so we didn't eat out very much. This is true with everybody, but Kerry kept the dust down to about 3 weeks. I had many detailed requests that were probably a lot fussier than the average customer. Kerry's crew was on top of every one of them, making sure I was completely satisfied. Jake, Randall, and Kevin, his crew, accommodated my every request. The cabinets are subbed out to Kitchen Emporium, who provided a high quality result, and Kerry passed along his deep discount to me. Jerry at KE was also very impressive, redesigning my kitchen layout much better than my original request. Laundry rooms and mudrooms can be a headache for many homeowners. They are usually cramped with poor functionality and little storage space. Joe and Kristin suffered all those aches and more, as their laundry room lacked clothing storage. Shoes were crammed in every corner. There was nowhere to fold clothes without taking them to the kitchen. They were ready for a complete laundry room remodel project. Joe and Kristin interviewed several local remodeling companies but didn’t connect with anyone who could understand their vision. During the summer, when they were attending their son’s race venue, they noticed fellow kart racers Todd and Christine Jurs’ sponsor banner for their remodeling company, Advance Design Studio. The new combination mudroom/laundry room is everything Kristin and Joe hoped. There is plenty of storage, three pull-out laundry hampers for presorting laundry, a large central island for folding clothes, a designated bar to hang dry, and even a unique rotating shoe rack to keep shoes from cluttering the space. “My rotating shoe rack,” Kristin said when asked what her favorite part of her new laundry room was. “We have four kids. We have a lot of shoes and sporting events. So it makes sense to have all that space for shoes.” The center island has an exceptional feature as well. It has wheels. Kristin wanted to be able to move the island out of the way for different functions in the room. An island with wheels can be placed wherever needed in the space. The two existing closets were reconfigured with built-in closet storage systems to make them more functional than before with shelves for baskets holding gloves and hats, umbrellas, and coats. “They love it,” Project Designer Nicole Ryan said. “They had a vision of how they wanted the space to function but didn’t know exactly how to get it there. My design took all their needs and used the most efficient products to get them the desired outcome. Tons of function, while still looking beautiful!” The “White” Hudson Panel Dura Supreme cabinetry on the perimeter brightens the space and contrasts the popular blue “Gale Force” Dura Supreme cabinetry of the rolling island. The black and white encaustic design porcelain tile backsplash adds visual interest to the room above the white quartz countertops. Based on extensive interviews with our clients, one of our challenges of this job was to provide a practical and useable home for a couple who worked hard and played hard. They wanted a home that would be comfortable for them and since they entertained often, they required function yet desired drama and style. We worked with them from the ground up, selecting finishes, materials and fixtures for the entire home. We achieved comfort by using deep furniture pieces with white goose down cushions, suitable for curling up on. Colors and materials were selected based on rich tones and textures to provide drama while keeping with the practicality they desired. We also used eclectic pieces like the oversized chair and ottoman in the great room to add an unexpected yet comfortable touch. The chair is of a Balinese style with a unique wood frame offering a graceful balance of curved and straight lines. The floor plan was created to be conducive to traffic flow, necessary for entertaining. The other challenge we faced, was to give each room its own identity while maintaining a consistent flow throughout the home. Each space shares a similar color palette, attention to detail and uniqueness, while the furnishings, draperies and accessories provide individuality to each room.
