Reimagining an Urban Classic Perched high above San Francisco’s Cow Hollow neighborhood, this meticulously reimagined residence represents a thoughtful transformation of a classic urban home into a contemporary, light-filled sanctuary. The project involved a comprehensive renovation paired with both vertical and horizontal expansion, dramatically increasing the home’s footprint while enhancing its relationship to sweeping views of the Bay, the Palace of Fine Arts, and the surrounding hillside neighborhoods. The design strategy focused on opening the home to light, air, and vistas—elements often constrained in the dense urban fabric of San Francisco. By extending the structure upward and outward, the architects created a dynamic four-level residence that unfolds gradually, culminating in expansive living spaces and rooftop terraces oriented toward panoramic city and water views. Architecture that Frames the View At the heart of the design is a careful orchestration of sightlines and natural light. Large black-framed windows punctuate the façade and interior spaces, deliberately positioned to capture iconic San Francisco vistas while flooding the home with daylight. The architecture prioritizes openness, allowing rooms to flow seamlessly while maintaining a strong visual connection to the surrounding landscape. A dramatic skylight above the central stairwell anchors the vertical circulation of the home. This architectural gesture not only brings daylight deep into the interior but also reinforces the sense of spatial continuity between floors. Warm Modern Interiors Inside, the home balances architectural clarity with warm materiality. Wide-plank oak floors run throughout the residence, creating visual cohesion and grounding the interiors with natural warmth. Custom walnut millwork—integrated shelving, cabinetry, and wall panels—introduces depth and texture while complementing the clean lines of the architecture. The interiors are intentionally restrained yet richly layered. Contemporary furnishings, sculptural lighting, and curated artwork add personality while maintaining the calm, sophisticated palette that defines the home. The Social Heart of the Home The main living level serves as the social centerpiece of the residence. An open-plan kitchen, dining area, and lounge space unfold toward the view, creating an environment that feels both expansive and intimate. A sculptural marble island anchors the kitchen, functioning as both workspace and gathering hub. Surrounded by walnut cabinetry and professional-grade appliances, the kitchen merges elegance with functionality. Above, a cascading chandelier introduces a sense of vertical movement, reflecting the home’s emphasis on light and architectural rhythm. Living areas are arranged to encourage conversation and connection. Generous seating, layered rugs, and thoughtful lighting define distinct zones within the open plan while maintaining uninterrupted sightlines toward the cityscape beyond. Private Retreats Above the City Upper levels of the home are dedicated to quieter, more intimate spaces. The primary suite is conceived as a private retreat, where expansive windows frame treetop views and invite natural light throughout the day. The accompanying bathroom continues the home’s refined material palette. Marble surfaces, warm wood cabinetry, and brushed brass fixtures create a spa-like environment that balances luxury with tranquility. Additional bedrooms and flexible living spaces offer comfort for family and guests, each designed with the same attention to light, proportion, and material richness. Spaces for Entertaining Lower levels provide additional areas for gathering and entertaining. A lounge and bar area offer a relaxed setting for hosting, while custom wine storage adds a sophisticated touch for collectors and enthusiasts. These spaces transition easily to outdoor areas, reinforcing the home’s emphasis on indoor-outdoor living. A landscaped rear yard introduces greenery and privacy at ground level, offering a serene urban escape. Above it all, the rooftop terrace becomes the crown jewel of the residence. Elevated above the neighborhood, it provides sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay and the Palace of Fine Arts. Comfortable seating areas, lush planters, and open sky create an ideal setting for outdoor entertaining, sunset gatherings, or quiet moments overlooking the city. The name of this project says it all. It is a home with materials, elements and details that are assembled in a modernist style that all have purpose and meaning to the Owners. This is a goal for every project, but in this case, extra care by the interior designer who is one of the Owners is evident as you move through the interior and exterior spaces. Exterior wall materials include a combination of split face earth tone natural brick and an off-white stucco finish. The interior finishes are a combination of stone tiles, various soft toned wood patterned finishes, wall coverings and fabrics, etc. that all give each space its own personality. Light fixtures follow suit with an array of designs that can set different moods for each room. It starts with the approach to a symmetrical front elevation that features an intimate entry porch with a hand-carved arched wood front door. One enters a main entry foyer that serves as a circulation spine for this 2-story home with 5 bedrooms, 5 full baths and 2 half baths. The square footage for the conditioned spaces is 7,045 sq ft and the total under roof square footage is 9,360 sq ft. The house rests on a sloping site that has an elevation drop of about 14’ with a pool and outdoor living area with views and access down the hill to a wooded area beyond. As you move through the main foyer, you’re able to access a guest bedroom, office space, stair tower, intimate dining room, wine cellar and onto the living room with coffered ceilings featuring a parka patterned wood finish. The adjacent kitchen continues the unique detailing with a wood clad exhaust hood and a mix of white oak and painted cabinetry with a large island that seats 6. A breakfast area with banquette seating provides panoramic views to the patio and pool area. Easy access is offered to the outdoor living area that continues the interior finish theme and has a dining, cooking and sitting area with a fireplace that is the focal point. The master suite features a well-placed bedroom with great views of the backyard. It leads to a master bath and large closet area that is well appointed with finishes and fixtures that set it apart from other bathroom spaces. The second floor is divided into two areas, one over the main house with an added play area space. The other is above a 3-Car Garage which is designed to be a mancave/game room that has a large bar and features the one and only DJ booth where musical entertainment is taken to another level. Both provide plenty of views to the front and backyard areas of the site.

The family frequently puts on large gatherings for friends of all ages; thus, multiple “eddy out” spaces were created throughout the home for more intimate chats. Exposed steel structural ribs and generous glazing in the great room create a rhythm and draw one’s gaze to the folding horizon. Smaller windows on the lower level frame intimate portraits of nature. Cedar siding and dark shingle roofing help the home blend in with its piney surroundings. Inside, rough sawn cabinetry and nature inspired tile provide a textural balance with the bright white spaces and contemporary fixtures.

The owners requested a Private Resort that catered to their love for entertaining friends and family, a place where 2 people would feel just as comfortable as 42. Located on the western edge of a Wisconsin lake, the site provides a range of natural ecosystems from forest to prairie to water, allowing the building to have a more complex relationship with the lake - not merely creating large unencumbered views in that direction. The gently sloping site to the lake is atypical in many ways to most lakeside lots - as its main trajectory is not directly to the lake views - allowing for focus to be pushed in other directions such as a courtyard and into a nearby forest. The biggest challenge was accommodating the large scale gathering spaces, while not overwhelming the natural setting with a single massive structure. Our solution was found in breaking down the scale of the project into digestible pieces and organizing them in a Camp-like collection of elements: - Main Lodge: Providing the proper entry to the Camp and a Mess Hall - Bunk House: A communal sleeping area and social space. - Party Barn: An entertainment facility that opens directly on to a swimming pool & outdoor room. - Guest Cottages: A series of smaller guest quarters. - Private Quarters: The owners private space that directly links to the Main Lodge. These elements are joined by a series green roof connectors, that merge with the landscape and allow the out buildings to retain their own identity. This Camp feel was further magnified through the materiality - specifically the use of Doug Fir, creating a modern Northwoods setting that is warm and inviting. The use of local limestone and poured concrete walls ground the buildings to the sloping site and serve as a cradle for the wood volumes that rest gently on them. The connections between these materials provided an opportunity to add a delicate reading to the spaces and re-enforce the camp aesthetic. The oscillation between large communal spaces and private, intimate zones is explored on the interior and in the outdoor rooms. From the large courtyard to the private balcony - accommodating a variety of opportunities to engage the landscape was at the heart of the concept. Featuring solid wood construction and a welcoming walnut finish, the Blake dining collection creates a warm, intimate environment, perfect for sharing your new beginnings and happy endings together.

The objective of this project was to create an elegant, simple space that was set up for casual entertaining. The client leans towards a more modern aesthetic which is reflected in the custom-designed steel trellis, the horizontally-coursed veneer wall and the corten steel planters. The outdoor grilling/kitchen area is housed under a separate trellis to help create different outdoor "rooms", per the client's request. Also enhancing the modern tone is the client's sculpture collection which is incorporated to add punctuation and interest to the space. The planting plan was also kept simple, using a mature olive tree and Japanese maple as focal points and some heavily repeated perennials and grasses to both define and soften the space.
