Inspiration for a large coastal open concept light wood floor living room remodel in San Diego with white walls, a standard fireplace and a stone fireplace

This project was designed for a couple who lives in Florida but wanted to create a mountain getaway here in Virginia. This was a dramatic, full home renovation project which converted a 1970’s vinyl siding covered, quasi-modern home into a cozy yet open, mountain lodge retreat with breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge mountains. A large wrap around porch was added as well as a beautiful screened in porch for the enjoyment and full appreciation of the surrounding landscapes. While the overall interior layout remained relatively unchanged, new elements were introduced, such as a two-story stone fireplace, a residential elevator, a new master bedroom, updated kitchen and reclaimed wood paneling finishing the walls. While you catch a glimpse of the stunning vista while approaching the house, the full view is best appreciated from the new screened in porch or cedar hot tub which sets you right out into nature. Originally the formal living room that was not used, was transformed into a fabulous dining room with a warm and intimate feeling. Acacia hardwood floors were introduced, sterile walls were replaced with a large arabesque patterned metallic wallpaper. A large crystal chandelier was hung to add presence and ground the room. A carved gold mirror provided reflection and more natural light. Full height silk drapes with a custom cornice were added to complete the room. Inspiration for a transitional dark wood floor enclosed dining room remodel in San Francisco with blue walls, a standard fireplace and a tile fireplace

Introducing a new standard in Vinyl Plank. Inspired by the length and width of European Oak flooring, these are floors to both admire and live on. At 9-inches wide by 7-feet long, they are the largest vinyl plank available on the market, creating a modern, low-seam installation. The extra-durable 30 mil wear-layer (0.75 mm), ceramic bead coating, and 100% water-proof core make for a floor that can handle heavy commercial traffic. A pre-attached cork backing provides a softer feel, and sound insulation in multi-story applications.

Warm gray porcelain tiles create a modern masculine feel in this recent Woodley Park-DC bathroom remodel. The custom live edge walnut shelves introduce a natural element against the contemporary floating quartz countertop and backsplash. A non-working whirlpool tub was replaced with a generous walk-in shower and frameless glass enclosure. The comfortable elegance of this French-Country inspired home belies the challenges faced during its conception. The beautiful, wooded site was steeply sloped requiring study of the location, grading, approach, yard and views from and to the rolling Pennsylvania countryside. The client desired an old world look and feel, requiring a sensitive approach to the extensive program. Large, modern spaces could not add bulk to the interior or exterior. Furthermore, it was critical to balance voluminous spaces designed for entertainment with more intimate settings for daily living while maintaining harmonic flow throughout. The result home is wide, approached by a winding drive terminating at a prominent facade embracing the motor court. Stone walls feather grade to the front façade, beginning the masonry theme dressing the structure. A second theme of true Pennsylvania timber-framing is also introduced on the exterior and is subsequently revealed in the formal Great and Dining rooms. Timber-framing adds drama, scales down volume, and adds the warmth of natural hand-wrought materials. The Great Room is literal and figurative center of this master down home, separating casual living areas from the elaborate master suite. The lower level accommodates casual entertaining and an office suite with compelling views. The rear yard, cut from the hillside, is a composition of natural and architectural elements with timber framed porches and terraces accessed from nearly every interior space flowing to a hillside of boulders and waterfalls. The result is a naturally set, livable, truly harmonious, new home radiating old world elegance. This home is powered by a geothermal heating and cooling system and state of the art electronic controls and monitoring systems.

This kitchen took a tired, 80’s builder kitchen and revamped it into a personalized gathering space for our wonderful client. The existing space was split up by the dated configuration of eat-in kitchen table area to one side and cramped workspace on the other. It didn’t just under-serve our client’s needs; it flat out discouraged them from using the space. Our client desired an open kitchen with a central gathering space where family and friends could connect. To open things up, we removed the half wall separating the kitchen from the dining room and the wall that blocked sight lines to the family room and created a narrow hallway to the kitchen. The old oak cabinets weren't maximizing storage and were dated and dark. We used Waypoint Living Spaces cabinets in linen white to brighten up the room. On the east wall, we created a hutch-like stack that features an appliance garage that keeps often used countertop appliance on hand but out of sight. The hutch also acts as a transition from the cooking zone to the coffee and wine area. We eliminated the north window that looked onto the entry walkway and activated this wall as storage with refrigerator enclosure and pantry. We opted to leave the east window as-is and incorporated it into the new kitchen layout by creating a window well for growing plants and herbs. The countertops are Pental Quartz in Carrara. The sleek cabinet hardware is from our friends at Amerock in a gorgeous satin champagne bronze. One of the most striking features in the space is the pattern encaustic tile from Tile Shop. The pop of blue in the backsplash adds personality and contrast to the champagne accents. The reclaimed wood cladding surrounding the large east-facing window introduces a quintessential Colorado vibe, and the natural texture balances the crisp white cabinetry and geometric patterned tile. Minimalist modern lighting fixtures from Mitzi by Hudson Valley Lighting provide task lighting over the sink and at the wine/ coffee station. The visual lightness of the sink pendants maintains the openness and visual connection between the kitchen and dining room. Together the elements make for a sophisticated yet casual vibe-- a comfortable chic kitchen. We love the way this space turned out and are so happy that our clients now have such a bright and welcoming gathering space as the heart of their home!

ATIID collaborated with these homeowners to curate new furnishings throughout the home while their down-to-the studs, raise-the-roof renovation, designed by Chambers Design, was underway. Pattern and color were everything to the owners, and classic “Americana” colors with a modern twist appear in the formal dining room, great room with gorgeous new screen porch, and the primary bedroom. Custom bedding that marries not-so-traditional checks and florals invites guests into each sumptuously layered bed. Vintage and contemporary area rugs in wool and jute provide color and warmth, grounding each space. Bold wallpapers were introduced in the powder and guest bathrooms, and custom draperies layered with natural fiber roman shades ala Cindy’s Window Fashions inspire the palettes and draw the eye out to the natural beauty beyond. Luxury abounds in each bathroom with gleaming chrome fixtures and classic finishes. A magnetic shade of blue paint envelops the gourmet kitchen and a buttery yellow creates a happy basement laundry room. A bold navy dresser styled with brass hardware, stacked books, and sculptural accents creates a refined focal point. Above, a vibrant botanical artwork introduces color and pattern, balancing the rich tones below with a fresh, collected feel.

Kährs Chevron – chic, classic looks with a modern twist. Kährs has introduced a new patterned wood floor collection for Spring 2016. Offered in four on-trend colour tones, new Chevron creates a classical parquet-look with speed and ease. Matching frameboards can then be used around the edge of a room, to create a border for the stunning design. Unlike traditional parquet staves which are glued down piece-by-piece, Kährs’ Chevron has a modern, plank format – measuring 1848x300x15mm - which is fast to install. The angled chevron pattern and ingenious ‘parallelogram’ short ends create the continuous V-shaped design, which is further emphasized by a bevelled edge. All boards are brushed to create a tactile lived-in look, which complements the warm white, weathered grey, classic brown and dark brown colour tones and the lively oak graining. Kährs Chevron has a multi-layered construction, made up of a sustainable oak surface layer and a plywood core. This eco-friendly, engineered format makes the floor more stable and ideal for installation over underfloor heating.
