Our client wanted to keep her home’s historic character and charm and chose Forward Design Build Remodel because she knew we could work with her home’s historic bones and honor the original design. The goals for this remodel were to open the older kitchen, preserve the location of the windows, update the finishes and lighting, and better the kitchen's feng shui. Our plan involved maximizing storage in the smaller space without making it feel cluttered and overwhelming while adding luxury and higher-end finishes to the kitchen and bathrooms. Our team utilized custom cabinetry and a two-toned color palette in the kitchen to work with the space and efficiently open up the remaining area. We transformed the bathrooms from outdated, essential to elegant, modern ones with aesthetically pleasing and functional cutouts.

A key element of the renovation involved embracing energy-efficient design solutions to reduce its environmental impact and increase savings from reduced electric bills. Existing windows were replaced with energy-efficient fenestration, and when it came to selecting the opening glass wall systems for the kitchen, NanaWall Systems offered the ideal product. The SL60 folding window doors feature double and triple glazed glass options that maintain desired temperatures indoors while keeping extreme heat and cold outside. In addition, specialized seals provide superior humidity and water control from entering the home during inclement weather, creating comfortable indoor/outdoor living spaces year-round. We Installed Ice and Water barrier at the edges and ridge and around chimneys (which we also replaced - see that project here on Houzz). We installed 18" Western Red Cedar perfection shingles across all roofing and atop bay windows. All valleys and chimney/vent protrusions were flashed with copper, in keeping with the traditional look of the period.

We used Fabuwood Galaxy Indigo for the vanities — all-plywood construction with solid wood doors and drawer fronts, soft close throughout. Shaker-style flat panels keep the navy from feeling heavy. The brushed gold (Jeffrey Alexander 635-96SBZ in satin bronze) shows up across hardware, faucets, lighting, the tub filler, and the shower trim, creating a quiet continuity throughout the room. The Shower Removing the wall between the old shower and old vanity area created room for a proper walk-in. We tiled the entire shower floor to ceiling in Decovita Calacatta Suave 24x48" porcelain — large format installed in a 50% offset horizontal pattern, with cement board and redgard underneath. The marble-look porcelain gives the visual depth of natural marble without the maintenance. A built-in shower bench, custom-built into the corner, is wrapped in the same wall tile on the front with a quartz top matching the vanity counter. The shower niche is detailed with MSI Arabescato Carrara 2" honed hex mosaic at the back, the same tile used on the shower floor. All tile edges are finished with Schluter in satin bronze to match the room's metal finishes. The shower door is custom frameless 3/8" tempered glass with a satin bronze pull — no metal frame interrupting the sight line. The Vanities and Countertops The new double vanity gives both clients their own space for morning routines. Counter tops are MSI Calacatta Miraggio Cielo quartz with pencil edging and a 4" backsplash — a soft white with subtle gray veining that reads like real Calacatta marble without the porosity issues. Two undermount square porcelain sinks finish the surface cleanly. The Tub A 60" freestanding soaker tub sits under the bay of three windows. The floor-mounted tub filler is satin bronze with a handheld sprayer. We relocated the drain and supply lines to make the centered placement work. The tub is the room's quietest feature and its strongest — clients tell us they use this bathroom differently than they used the old one. Flooring MSI Sande Ivory 12x24" matte porcelain runs throughout the bathroom floor in a 50% offset pattern parallel to the vanity wall. Cement board underneath, 4" white wood baseboard, Whisper Grey grout that handles daily use without showing wear. Paint and Lighting Walls are Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace 2121-70 in satin — a true crisp white that doesn't lean cool or warm. Fall may be rolling into winter here on the East Coast, but the cooler weather doesn’t mean we stop our deck replacement services for the season. In fact, we keep going right through winter so that our customers have their brand new decks ready for warm temperatures, especially when there is a pool involved as is the case with our customer in Moorestown, New Jersey. They won’t be wasting a single summer pool day next year waiting for the deck to be completed. Our deck replacement team removed the original decking and replaced it with Trex Transcend Tropics grooved decking in Island Mist along with white RDI Finyline railings. Instead of using lattice to enclose the underside of the deck, our homeowner chose to have our team install Trex Enhance Basics grooved decking in Clamshell. We love the streamlined look it gives to the deck, and we hope our customers enjoy when they spend next summer out on their new deck.

What a privilege to work in this beautiful old Watermill! This was a really special project to be involved in and a challenge we loved embarking on. A painted in-frame shaker kitchen complete with solid oak drawer boxes was the ideal style to work with here. We used a pale ‘winter blue’ tone to lift the overall colour scheme, whilst keeping it classic. In order to reflect more light around the space, we used glass splashbacks behind the Aga and sink. Colour matching the glass panels to the walls means they really blend into the design as well as helping to reflect light. The worktops are a multi-tone granite worktop called ‘Aosta’. This particular granite features almost turquoise and plummy colours that work with both the blue furniture, and the flooring. The island is a real multi-purpose space. It provides a food prep area, integrated hob & oven, plus seating area. Designed in this way, it is the real hub of the kitchen. Previously, the kitchen had felt like two separate areas, but the run of storage units incorporating the old fridge-freezer really ties the spaces together seamlessly. Ample storage and elegant storage solutions were key to this design. Several units were tailor made on site. We designed a run of units to conceal the alarm system, consumer unit and even a hostess trolley neatly out of sight. One of our absolutely favourite areas in this kitchen is our bespoke window seat for the bay window. This little perch looks out over the water and doubles up as extra storage. A great little nook to relax into. The final touch in this kitchen is the lighting under the cabinets and bespoke mantle. At night, this creates a particularly lovely ambience against the backdrop of the running water outside.

This gorgeous Chicago backyard was designed and developed in several stages. First Rooftopia removed a damaged concrete slab, installed a new porcelain paver patio and rebuilt a fresh and modern stairway to the backdoor. The next phase of the project involved building a large custom pergola to keep the space open while providing shade and allow for more accent lighting over the dining and lounge. The outdoor kitchen incorporates a grill with a smoker and a double tap kegerator to pour refreshing hoppy beverages for those much anticipated post Covid summer gatherings! The garden bed has a mix of perennial grasses and flowers that accentuate the lemon yellow dining chairs with pops of orange for an overall joyful summer vibe.

Kitchen - Inside, cathedral and tray ceilings in the living spaces give this home a spacious feel, with French doors and large windows facing the rear of the home. A coat closet and mud room off the garage help keep messes hidden, and the laundry room includes counters for extra workspace. Rustic + Modern. That is the vision this homeowner had for her new kitchen. After purchasing this house, one of the big changes was removing a wall, and opening up the space. This gave us the space for a huge island, and a dramatic focal point. The design concept was driven by the client’s vision, and involved prominent use of reclaimed barn wood. From the beginning, 2 major uses of the barn wood were planned – wrapping the island, and construction of a sliding “barn” door. With these focal points in mind, the cabinetry was kept clean and simple. A shaker door style was chosen in maple, painted with a soft gray-toned white. Poured concrete countertops continue the neutral background, allowing the barn wood to keep center stage. The mix: rustic + modern. The rustic details include the sliding door hardware, period stools, and the reclaimed-lumber open shelves with the primitive dishware display. These details are seamlessly melded with modern elements, including the contemporary light fixtures and faucet. Other modern touches include the brushed-stainless accessories. This kitchen design includes an impressive 8’ island, with generous prep and seating areas. The main wall offers over 19’ of cabinetry, and features an immense amount of storage. Across the room, 2 custom pantry cabinets expand the storage options. All in all, a timeless and unique kitchen that we were proud to be a part of!

In keeping with the historic nature of the home, white painted custom cabinets with shaker style doors (that echo the paneling in the rest of the house) replaced dated cabinets in the kitchen. An island with seating for five people allows guests to sit and chat with the cook, and the kids to be more involved during busy breakfasts. A custom buffet cabinet was designed to echo traditional free standing cabinets and houses the coffee maker, toaster and breakfast items, which are neatly tucked away behind doors when not in use. We strived to preserve the unique features of this home, with new items such as period style light fixtures, and trim details that match the rest of the home. The space is complete with historically accurate finishes like marble countertops.

The original layout had a wall separating the kitchen from the dining room and an awkward fridge wall that limited both storage and traffic flow. Our solution involved removing the dividing wall (confirmed non-load-bearing), tightening the new dining room opening to 66 inches, and extending the fridge wall 25 inches into the kitchen to create a proper full-height pantry run. The result is a kitchen that breathes — open to the dining and living areas, with clear sight lines from the island to the bay windows at the far end. Design Approach The clients came in knowing they didn't want white. They didn't want navy. They wanted something with real wood character — the kind of finish that ages well and looks more like furniture than stock kitchen cabinetry. Cherry was the answer to that question. We anchored the room around contrast: warm cherry cabinetry against clean white walls and white quartz, black hardware grounding the cherry's warmth, and a single waterfall island acting as the architectural focal point. Stainless appliances, brushed gold pendant accents, and the herringbone hardwood floor pull the room together without any one element shouting for attention. The Cabinetry Medallion Gold Line Sonoma Cappuccino — a stained cherry finish that catches light differently throughout the day. All-plywood box construction, solid wood doors and drawer fronts, soft close everywhere, US-made with a lifetime warranty. Four pull-out drawers built into the pantry bottoms keep the deep storage actually usable rather than a black hole. Cabinet hardware is Top Knobs Riverside Pulls in flat black — 40 pulls across drawers and doors, plus three longer pulls on the 36-inch base drawers. The black was a deliberate decision: with cherry and stainless already providing warm and cool tones, brass or gold would have been one warm tone too many. Black grounds the cabinetry and gives the kitchen its architectural definition. The Island and Countertops MSI Calacatta Miraggio Gold quartz throughout — perimeter counters, island, waterfall ends, and the powder room. The black undermount farmhouse-style sink ties back to the hardware throughout the rest of the kitchen. The Backsplash MSI Metro Gold tile — small format white and gold tiles in a herringbone-adjacent pattern with intermittent gold accents. Full height, continuous behind the floating shelves and behind the hood. Four custom floating shelves are spaced above a 3-inch countertop ledge: first shelf 18 inches above the ledge, second shelf 9 inches above that, third 18 inches above the second. The shelves are stained to match the cabinetry. The backsplash continues behind the shelves and behind the hood, so the wall reads as a continuous textured surface that the shelves and hood float in front of. The Appliances This is a serious cooking kitchen. The clients chose a 48-inch Wolf gas range, a Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator integrated into the cherry cabinet wall, a Wolf microwave drawer in the island base, and a Bosch dishwasher. For ventilation, we installed a 1200 CFM hood paired with a make-up air system to balance the negative pressure that hood pulls. New ducting was routed through the exterior siding on the side of the house. The Flooring MSI engineered hardwood throughout the entire main level — approximately 800 square feet — installed in a Bramlett herringbone pattern. Herringbone adds roughly 15-20 percent to material and labor costs because of the angled cuts and waste factor, but the result is a floor that reads as more considered and luxurious than standard plank flooring. Finished with 4.5-inch white wood baseboards throughout. The Powder Room A small room with a big personality. The clients chose a deep blue and teal scallop pattern wallpaper (client-supplied, we installed) and paired it with the same Sonoma Cappuccino cherry vanity used in the kitchen — material continuity between the spaces. Powder room countertop is the same MSI Calacatta Miraggio Gold quartz from the kitchen with a rectangular white undermount sink. Hardware on the powder room vanity is Top Knobs Riverside in honey bronze rather than the kitchen's flat black — the warm bronze pulls the brass tones from the faucet into the millwork and complements the wallpaper. New sconce, kept the existing toilet (refinishing or replacing a working toilet is wasted money in a powder room remodel), and a Panasonic Whisper Green exhaust fan. Final result: kitchen completely open to family room! Sightlines to negative edge pool. Greatly improved family interaction with social integration of spaces: planning area, kitchen, breakfast room, eat-on island, family room and formal dining (to right through barn doors). Todd Ramsey

This design was for a light-hearted couple who were relocating from the coast to Kelowna and were excited to be involved in the design process. We worked together to integrate their desires and our thoughtful design elements. Embracing the small footprint of the kitchen we structured the space with a dropped Rist white oak wood ceiling feature with black pendant accent lighting. The kitchen also features waterfall edge quartz counters, a walk-in pantry, Wolf professional appliances and the clients must have high-end wine fridge. The kitchen seamlessly flows through to the dining room and open concept living room featuring a concrete fireplace with a white oak beam to keep them warm and cozy through the winter season. The staircase includes thoughtful recessed step lights with the black metal railing pairing perfectly with the layered linens and whites of the home. The master bath features soft gloss Zellige Artisanal tile with a natural edge giving that hand-made feel. The backlit shower niche has a miter edge tile. Vanity wall sconces added the finishing touch on this space.
