When the weather begins to get colder, this can be a dangerous time for trees. There are many reasons how the cold and other elements during winter can harm your trees and surrounding landscape. This also means that there are many ways in which you can help prevent any unfortunate accidents due to the weather. Some of the most common reasons trees can get damaged from the cold weather are as follows: -Root damage -Extensive bark -Core chewing from pests We here at Five Star Tree Services want to provide you with the right information on how to help prevent winter tree damage. Root Damage Prevention Unlike the rest of the tree, which includes the stems, branches, and buds, the roots are the last part of the tree to go dormant for the winter. This means that they are more vulnerable when the weather takes a sharp cold turn. The reason this tends to happen is that the soil temperatures stay warmer than the air, hence why the branches go dormant first and the roots take longer. There are also a number of different things that dictate soil temperatures. For instance, dry soil gets colder quicker than sodden soil. Making it so that there is more ice present in sandy or dry soils, which is how it gets colder in temperature. If you want your soil temperatures to be higher, mulch and snow can help insulate the ground and keep it sheltered from the harsher elements. If you have recently planted a tree, the disturbed soil will now allow cold air to get at the roots, which will hinder any root development or even kill newly grown roots. How To Prevent For newly planted trees, you should cover the roots with 3-4 inches of wood mulch. The best thing to do is make a 6-inch circle surrounding the base of your tree but make sure to keep it away from the trunk. Doing this is going to help support the tree during the winter and help stop unusual roots from growing. Before you lay your mulch down, you should also be checking for holes or breaks in the soil and fill them in before laying your mulch down. In the fall and spring, the soil is continuously being defrosted and refreezing again. This makes the soil contract and expand and can hurt newly planted roots. It can also be enough to push them out of the ground completely! Making mulch even more important since it can provide more consistent temperatures in the soil. If you are experiencing a dry fall with little to no rain happening, you need to give your tree a really good watering before the ground starts to freeze. Doing this is going to lower the risk of your tree getting infiltrated by ice or frost. Pest Damage Prevention There are plenty of things that can harm your trees when the weather turns cold. Some of these other things include: -Sunscald -Dieback -Brown evergreen foliage -Salt damage But aside from weather related ailments, you also need to worry about the damage done by certain pests as well. This can include: -Mice -Hares -Voles -Deer These seemingly harmless animals are known to do major damage to plants during the winter when they are foraging on things like twigs, bark, stems, and leaves. They have even been known to completely eat bushes, right to the ground, and kill trees when they destroy their bark. One of the only ways to prevent animals from chewing on the bark is by building barriers around your trees in order to keep the pests from getting at them. Luckily, making these barriers isn’t as hard as you might be thinking. There are numerous potions for you to choose from that are easy to assemble and disassemble that you can find at your local garden center or landscaping stores. The original kitchen was very dark and enclosed, so the first step to enhancing this kitchen was to open it up and create a sense of light and space in the room. By raising the soffit, removing the built-in cabinets, and changing the position of the ovens, microwave, and refrigerator, I was able to create a better layout that maximizes every inch of the kitchen as useful space. I removed the divider wall, tripling the size of the opening from the dining room to the kitchen, and I added natural clear Alder cabinets. My client envisioned a kitchen with two-toned cabinets, so I paired the locally crafted Alder with grey upper cabinets and grey Shaker style cabinets on the island to make it stand out more. I also added wood-look LVT for a stylish yet highly durable kitchen floor. The countertops are Della Terra quartz with a matte finish for a more natural feeling texture that cuts down on glare, and I paired the counters with a grey porcelain subway tile backsplash for easy-cleaning. A unique feature of this kitchen is that the outlets are barely visible, as I hid them underneath the cabinets. I added under-cabinet lighting, and converted the kitchen lights to LED, aside from the Edison lightbulbs in the hanging pendants. The biggest challenge for this project was devising a way to heat and cool the kitchen while working with minimal structural elements. However, by moving the HVAC above the refrigerator the kitchen now has more cooling than it did previously, while having a more modern aesthetic. With natural lighting and abundant storage options, this kitchen is now bright, clean, and de-cluttered.

Replace an old deck with a brick patio isn't as easy as you think, but you can tell by the pictures it was worth it. Brick, stone, steel, and wood were all used to make this back patio come to life. All the elements of hardscaping coming together for one amazing project

Location, location, location! Isn’t that what all of our real-estate friends and colleagues are always telling us? Our clients made a wise choice when purchasing this beautifully located ocean front property nestled in the dunes of Palm Beach, but they were presented with a challenge: how to take this luxury townhouse from dark and dated to a chic easy breezy dream home that reflects is naturally gorgeous sun and sand dunes surroundings as well as our clients laid back personalities. Built in 1981, this dream home’s post-modern style with dark wood architectural features, cold concrete structure, and harsh lighting felt out of step by todays standards. Our solution: open the staircase and switch out the wood paneled banister for clear glass, exposing its grand design and allowing for amazing and unobscured views of the property’s outdoor spaces as well as the home’s common areas, permitting its large loft space to shine. Bedrooms were treated to neutral color-schemes inspired by the Palm Beach dunes that surround this oceanfront home. An impressive pallet of textures and materials were chosen, and juxtapositions of lux linens and natural textiles like grass wall coverings and a large arrangement of sculptural branches brings the outside, in. Big and bold custom metal sculptures were installed in the primary bedroom along with hand blown glass light fixtures, adding that touch of glam that we are known for. The private courtyard revamp is above and beyond anything you will see in Palm Beach. Playful and luxurious, it features a koi pond, a two story art installation and a dramatic custom stone waterfall. Its seating area makes great use of this homes original design by softening the heavy overhang with ceiling coverings in Peaky Cyprus and covering the walls with grass, creating a very cool and cozy space to relax and unwind. The entire courtyard is expertly illuminated by artistic lighting that makes every corner a sparkling treat for the eyes. We had fun with this ambitious project and we hope your takeaway is to let location be your guide when looking for your dream home, because anything is possible in design but great surroundings are rare treasures that must be found and cherished.

What a way to be greeted. This foyer screams personality, and that isn't always easy to achieve in a confined condo entry way. We pumped the space full of style to invite people in. Layering textures and styles, this space is anything but boring.

This beautiful bathroom remodel by Stoneunlimited Kitchen and Bath has all the bells and whistles that any dream bath should have. Middleton Maple Medallion cabinetry in Frappe finish with soft close doors and dovetail construction are topped off with beautiful Brunello Quartz that have a soft veining pattern and look like marble. The decision to install 2 vanity top towers allowed for more storage solutions and created a vertical component that added balance to the room. Check out the before images of this part of bathroom our website, there used to be a linen closet on this wall. The shower is luxurious with its Delta fixtures, 4 body sprays, hand shower and shower trim at the entrance for easy access to turning on the water. The hex patterned tile above the niche is a nice design element that draws the eye upward and in line with the mirrors installed on the opposite wall. A linear drain with tile insert, allows for drainage without the traditional look of a drain. Serpentino Blanco Porcelain tiles throughout, add an element of texture with it's fluid soft veining pattern. The flooring isn't just beautiful, it's been upgraded. Heated floors throughout will provide warmth to the feet during cold days and our clients can even program the thermostat according to their bathing schedule. Last but not least is the 60" free standing tub. It's tub filler and hand-shower make it the perfect place to soak and relax after a long day.
