Another design need for her IKEA kitchen was an easier-to-clean countertop, Shoko says. “Our original counter was brown, making it very difficult to spot messes, spills, and crumbs. That’s why we opted for a white counter with matching backsplash (which is all one piece),” she says. In fact, the Caesarstone in Blizzard runs from the sink to the stove area, giving ample space for food prep and is complemented by the matching backsplash and the custom butcher block seating area on the other side of the stove. “Clean up is so much quicker and easier with the new countertops,” she says. The counter area is further brightened by under cabinet lighting strips from IKEA. For new IKEA renovators, Shoko wants to share some useful tips from her IKEA experience. “The first thing I would say to others is do not be intimidated by the renovation process! There are so many resources available that can help simplify an IKEA renovation project. I’d also suggest asking a lot of questions, including asking how you plan on using the space,” she says. She also says that working with design professionals was the best decision for her IKEA kitchen. “The kitchen specialists at IKEA were very knowledgeable, and, of course the staff at IKD explained all the options, materials, and demystified the IKEA ordering process,” she adds. She concludes: “Ultimately, we chose IKEA cabinetry for the ease and the price. Since our apartment isn’t a forever home, we didn’t think it made sense to go for custom cabinets. We were looking for something simple, clean, and affordable, and for a project (and a space) of this size, IKEA’s options were a great fit for us!”

Project featured in Variety, "Originally designed by celebrated architect Paul Williams and extensively updated and renovated to combine period architectural details with a modern-day lifestyle, the approximately 4,300-square-foot East Coast traditional has four bedrooms and four full and two half bathrooms plus a detached cottage with another bathroom for guests or staff. A slender center hall foyer features polished grey and white checkerboard marble floor tiles and a tightly curved staircase; the formal living room has a fireplace and floor-to-ceiling bay window that looks out to the verdant front yard; a library opens through transom-topped French doors to the backyard; and a chandelier lit formal dining room comfortably seats ten or twelve. This Tuxedo Kitchen is the inspiration of our staff designer, Kathleen Anthony, when she recently designed and remodeled her very own dream kitchen. Both function and elegance come together in this black and white custom kitchen design. Her home is transformed by widening the doorway connecting the living room and kitchen space for maximum entertaining. The beautiful glass crystal and rustic elements in the chandelier complement the cabinetry as do the roman shade, the beaded hardware, kitchen stools and other accessories. The marble and silver mirror tile backsplash pairs well with the quartz countertop. Beauty meets function with select storage features including the appliance garage, spice pull-outs, and divider tray storage areas. Two islands allow for seating on one end and prep on the smaller island including a microwave drawer. The home decor from the living room tie into the theme softening the space while displaying pops of color.

Adjacent to the main kitchen, we added a second service kitchen for the live-in staff and their family. This room used to be a catch-all laundry/storage/mudroom so we had to get creative in order to incorporate all of those features while adding a fully functioning eat-in kitchen. Using smaller appliances allowed us to capture more space for cabinetry and by stacking the cabinets and washer/dryer (relocated to the rear service foyer) we managed to meet all the requirements. We installed salvaged Heart of Pine floors to match the originals in the adjacent kitchen and chose a neutral finish palette that will be easy to maintain.
